Looking for Reading Program for My Kindergartner

I was going to suggest asking the school if they have a list of teachers or high school students that will tutor. I know the librarian at my son's elementary school will do tutoring. Also check into places like Sylvan Tutoring. I know SMU has a summer program and some of the classes are for kids needing that extra push in reading. Or like a previous post said, ask if RISD has summer school in the core subjects that she could take. PISD does it for 4 weeks, so it's not the whole summer.

Does RISD have a summer program?

I'm in Plano ISD and they have a summer program geared toward children needing extra help in core subjects. Ask the guidance counselor at the school. Some children who really really need help are " required" to go through this 6 week program in order to move up. It's a great program.

If not.... Your guidance counselor should know teachers who tutor one on one during the summer. Also join the library reading clubs and participate in those programs.

I suggest you look in to your local recreation center and what classes they might offer. i am pretty sure some of them offer these types of classes

I have to say if she is in Kindergarten she really shouldn't be reading yet. At least not more than Bob books. I know everyone seems to be able to read. But you will find out in about 2nd grade that a lot of those kids have no idea what they are reading. She also speaks two languages. Most duel language kids do take a little longer to master reading. I would make sure she knows her letters and the sounds each letter makes. Other then that I would just read to her a lot this summer and not worry about it.

All of the suggestions are good, but one other thing you can do is find a book series your daughter enjoys and then read together most nights. When my son & I started - I would read a paragraph, he'd read a paragraph. It increased to chapters. With a series of books there is the encouragement to keep reading as there is another book waiting. My son was older and we read the Harry Potter series. His reading level increased 2 grade levels that year - from being behind a year to ahead a year! We continued reading other books together as he grew. Today at 22, although we don't read together anymore, we will read the same books and have great discussions about them. Not something you regularly get with 22 year old sons! :)
