Rencently I came across the idea of a boys book club. I thought this would be a great idea as I'm also a mom of boys and I'm always looking for new ways to help my boys become good readers. I'm thinking of starting a boys book club to help educate my boys as well as other about diffrent cultures and to improve vocabulary.
My question is would you mom's be interested in such a club if given the opportunity? I'm beginning to wonder if I would get any takers.
Also, my degree is in psychology, so I'm not a teacher but I love to teach reading to my kids and I'm always looking for ways to improve reading skills. I thought that I could help others in the process. As a mom would you not want to have someone who is not an education major?
Any ideas or suggestions about what you would look for in such a club would be really helpful to get me started.
thank you

What can I do next?

I like the idea, but unfortunately my son would not be interested. He's really active and has never enjoyed reading the way our daughter does. I think if you try a book club, you'd need to make a real effort to choose books that would appeal to boys, more than focusing on learning different cultures (although if you can find cool books that do that, it might work). It wouldn't matter to me the lead mom's background.

You can always just attempt to start one in your area and see how it goes.

I think a boys bookclub is a great idea. What age group are you looking at?

neat idea. your education doesn't matter. you didn't mention the level but i'm assuming these are relatively good readers that can decode words but just need some help with motivation to expand what they read and challenge them with critical thinking and discussion.
I would start small, your kids and maybe two others from your school. invite as many as you want just expect small numbers it will grow as the kids tell their friends.
you aren't charging for this right??? so it's almost like free babysitting??Do you want the parents to stay, how will you deal with discipline?
I would focus less on the book and more on pulling them in with great snacks or a cool science activity that relates to the book. LIke if you are reading a Magic tree house book about a volcano and you make a volcano errupt they will be all excited.
Encyclopedia brownbooks are great, i've heard of 39 clues but never read it. A to Z mysteries are fun. again i don't know your level.
make sure the parents know what you will be reading and maybe sure you proof read it first. start slow, very cool idea.

Homeschoolers have book clubs all the time. They can be ran where the kids all read the same book and gather to talk about it, or the facilitator can choose a topic and have the kids find thier own book , read it, and come back and verbally report on it to the group. If the topic is on a certain subject, like Mexico, for example, it would be fun to have a Mexican pot luck with it. Or have the kids make a Mexican craft to show as well. Mexican posters or crepe paper in the mexican colors and paper Mexico flags hung in the room can add to the fun. Have the children pick the themes, they appreciate the responsibility and i think they become more invloved when they own it.
