We normally go to Port Aransas for vacation. If fact my in'laws have been going there for over 30 yrs and we go the week of Thanksgiving. It is no longer a sleepy little town and has become too busy and commerical. We are looking to find a new family vacation spot. Does anyone know of any great place on the coast? We love to fish off the docks and sometimes go deep sea fishing. They used to tie my husbands play pen to the dock :)

We know of a family who goes to Port O'Connor each chance they get. They are really into fishing, and it isn't commercialized much based on the website info. In fact, it may be too tame and underdeveloped for your taste. However, they love the fishing and the fact that you can get there from the Metroplex in about 5 hours. They mentioned a rental place on the water with a place to dock your boat directly under the rooms. (I picture a house on stilts that has water and a dock underneath instead of a garage.)

Hope this helps.

We go that same week, but actually stay in Rockport, which is close. We love it! Our family goes each year and has for many years.

Good luck!

Hi J.,

We stay at the Island House it's on North Padre Island but is considered Corpus Christi. You have your own condo and there are bbq pits and a pool (it's heated in the winter I believe) You are right on the beach but away from town so it is relaxing. Website is www.ccislandhouse.com

Our family has also gone to Port Aransas for over 50 years, but we decided to try somewhere different for Spring Break. We went to Rockport. It is pretty commercial also, with a Walmart, McDonalds, etc. The downtown area is pretty well preserved. They have one beach area that is great for kids, but there are no waves and the water is fairly shallow. However, it does have several playgrounds, a maritime museum and a little aquarium. We went to the aquarium in Corpus, though. We took a day trip to Port A, and I really missed the sound of the waves, the seashells and the sandpipers. The water in Rockport was nice and warm, and the kids had a good time. There are also lots of places to fish in Rockport and especially in Fulton. We may try some of the other smaller towns along the Texas coast next time. I will be watching to see if you find a good one!

Hi, J.. My husband's family have always gone to Galveston (the only downside is the kelp). Since we've been married 4 years, we've gone every other year. Both times I've gone we've rented a beach house further from the sea wall on I-45. We've enjoyed from 5 to 13 people under one roof, entertained with karaoke, volleyball, etc. in our own property. You have a more private beach, your own amenities, and no noisy neighbors you can hear through walls in the adjacent room. For dinner, we'd trek into town to eat at our favorite restaurants, Fishtales and Fisherman's Wharf. We've done the tours through historic mansions and heard the tales of previous occupants and the great flood of 1901 that swamped the whole island. We've always enjoyed ourselves. Good times!

We go to Goose Island State Park every year for summer vacation. It is in Rock Port, TX. It's a sleepy little place on the bay. About an hour from Port Aransas. They have a large pier at the state park and there is also one along the main bridge, you have to pay for. You can also look into Fulton Beach. It's very close to Rock Port and the two cities are close enough you can commute back and forth. There are little shops, Fulton has a beach, and there is a lot to do once you get down there, if fishing is a big part of your trip. You can rent guides for the bay, and if you want you can always do a day trip to Corpus Christi for Deep Sea Fishing. Good luck. I believe there are also cottages and places you can rent out while you're there. We have an RV so we camp.
