Hi there! My husband and I are looking to add a dog to our family but would prefer to adopt an adult dog (anything over a year old) rather than get a puppy. We really love labs and would love to find a nice lab that would blend into our family but we're open to any breed, really. We have a young son (2.5 yrs) so we need to find one that is great with children. If anyone knows of any labs or other good family dogs that are looking for a forever home please let me know! Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hi A.,
I had to respond to your request because right before I read your post, I received an email about a couple of dogs (black labs) that are up for adoption because their owner is dying. I have an email with all the information and pictures and bios for the dogs if you are interested. Drop me an email at ____@____.com and I'll forward the email to you. When you read the info, you'll understand why I just HAD to respond to you.

Hi, We adopted a Greyhound from Twin River in Lincoln, RI. He is WONDERFUL with children. Very laid back and easy to take care of. Also, he doesn't bark ever. So lazy and loving! If you might be interested you should call June who manages the adoption program over there. Her number is ###-###-####.

If you are an active family and could take the dog on frequent walks, runs, etc.. German Shorthaired Pointers (GSP) are beautiful sweet dogs - my friend is the president of the rescue. Check out the website and read up on them to see if they are the breed for you and your family! www.gsprescuene.org

Good luck!

Look at brocktonbluedogshelter.org. They are local - their dogs are also listed on petfinder but if you go through their website, it'll link to just those available through them.

We have a black lab, adopted from a breeder out in Granby MA, near Springfield. The breeder is absolutely amazing, and I definitely recommend her. Our lab is so gentle and loving. She is playful with adults, but she is SO careful around children- it is amazing how she just knows what to do. My nine-month-old crawls over her, and occasionally pulls her tail or grabs a clump of fur before we can stop her. The dog just hops away, but takes it all in stride, and LOVES her baby sister!
This breeder often offers "retired" dogs (she allows her females to have up to 3 litters, then retires them). They are about 2 years old, and are well-cared-for, trained, lovable mommy dogs! Personally, I strongly recommend a lab, and I strongly recommend going through a breeder.
