Looking to Connect with Other Parents in Olympia

Our family is getting ready to move from Salt Lake to Olympia. I'm a stay-at-home mom and my husband works from home, so our opportunities to meet people will be somewhat limited. Can anyone suggest a good way to connect with other parents in the downtown Olympia area? We're both in our early 30's and have two sons, a 3yo and a 3mo.

What can I do next?

HI J., Welcome to Olympia!
My family has really enjoyed the kindermusik program with teacher Terri at Johanson's School of Ballet. They have programs for all age groups and for siblings too. I've met some really nice mom's there.

Also, the South Puget Sound Community College offers excellent parenting classes for infants and preschoolers. You can bring your children (there is a play room for them attached to the classroom) and it is very low key and offers really helpful information to become a better parent. I've met more great, people through this than anything else.

There is also a great baby gym, toddler gym, kinder gym program through the Olympia Center. Its inexpensive and really enriching for the kids and lots of time to chat for the mom's.

Once every other month there is Family Dance Night at Fusion. It is low cost, all ages, dancing fun. Many of the dances are led by Karen Kirsch who is a movement therapist. They provide popcorn, dress-up clothes, props for movement and some toys. I always feel really full and blessed after participating.

The YMCA both Downtown and Briggs have great playcare programs for the kids and all kinds of stuff for adults.

There are other more public venues that are family friendly and really wonderful like the Farmer's Market, Music in the Park, The Pet Parade, The Procession of the Species and Arts Walk.
Good Luck!

If you are looking for activities where you can meet other moms while still being with your children, I would suggest a MOMS Club. There are currently 3 in our area. You can learn more about the one for Olympia at www.momsclubofolympia.com. I've made wonderful friends and have found it to be the fastest way to meet people when you move to a new area. Welcome to Olympia!

Hi J., welcome to Olympia, WA.
I suggest the Hands on Children's Museum in downtown Olympia. It is a fun place for small children and lots of parents there as well. Every year my kindergarten class goes there for field trips. I am a para-educator in kindergarten here in Olympia and a single mom of a wonderful 10 year old son.
There are lots of beutiful parks to enjoy here in the summer time also.

Hi J.,

I would suggest getting involved in a MOPS group. There is one through Westwood Baptist Church on the Westside. If you can find childcare for your older child, I know there is room for more moms (childcare is full). Our group is currently meeting until May. This was one way I got connected to the area when we moved from out of state.

I would suggest a play group. There's a group called moms meetup you can join on-line and they will send you notification of when they will meet. There's MOPS at about 3 churches in Olympia you can go on-line to find where they meet. Also you could do a play group through the Olympia Parks & Rec. I like to meet parents at the play area in the mall. There is a really fun Farmer's Market downtown and several parks that are also good places to go with kids. Also the Children's Hands On Museum. If you are an outgoing person you can always strike up a conversation with other parents at those kinds of places.
My family all live in the Salt Lake area. I hope your move goes smoothly. I live on the westside of Olympia and have a 7yo boy and a 3yo girl. I would love to meet you. You can email me anytime.
