I hear Costco is cheaper than other places and to visit their pharmacy I believe you do not have to have a membership.

I've heard that walmart has a new flat fee perscription that is around four or five dollars. Also, be sure to ask for the generic brand, its the same as the brand that is written on the perscription but at half (or more) the cost.

I know there is a program called CareLink. Its like insurance for the uninsured. You pay according to your income and you get meds at low cost, doctors visits..

Hi Diane... I'm not sure how to get cheaper meds. It depends on your insurance. But, if you transfer the prescriptions to CVS pharmacy, you usually get a $25-$30 CVS gift card for each prescription. You can't use this on the meds, but you can use it to buy other stuff you might need to help transfer the cost like basic food and household items. Call them to see if this deal is available without a coupon. I think it is. Also, here's a link to the pharmacy for med cost info:
http://www.cvshealthpass.com/pharmacy.asp

Concerning the medical bills, he needs to call on each bill and make arrangements. He can explain his situation. They're very good about helping with this. He needs to let them know the minimum that he can pay. They'll work with him. He needs to keep in touch with them every month if a payment adjustment needs to be made. He can also explain that he simply cannot pay and that he'll call next month. Sometimes just sending $5 is good enough just to keep the account flowing. He needs to pay for the important things first including house, food, utilities and transportation. Those are priority. Then, focus on the medical bills. He will not get sued for this and he likely won't get his credit record messed with.

Hope this helps.

Hi D.,
I'm sorry to hear that your joung son had a heart attack! I worked with an Internal Med. Doctor 6 yrs ago. If your son has a primary care Doctor ask for a form that you and the Doctor fills out and then they sent it to the pharmaceutical company. What the people at the pharmaceutical company do is they send medication to your physician so they can give it to you. If I remember correctly you only pay for shipping and handling. Things might have changed but it never hurts to ask. I hope this information helps. Remember you can always ask for samples to. Don't be embarressed a lot of times they end up throwing the samples away because they expire.

Good luck,
Elisa M

Hi- I know that there are several independent pharmacies in the Jefferson area which might be able to make a payment plan for you. (Jefferson Village on Donaldson is one example-) Also- if he has no income right now- he may qualify for Care Link- the Bexar County University Health System service- that would cover alot of his expenses- our tax dollars cover it since we have a tax funded hospital district here in the county- ALso- I had some good luck getting CVS to work with me on my mom's meds in another state- but I would start with the little private pharmacies and ask about payment plans and see what they might offer. Also- a thought- contact Methodist HealthCare Ministries and ask about Wesley Nurse Services- they may be able to help you manage the process. You all will not only get through this- but benefit in the long run-

Have you checked with WalMart Or HEB? They both have medication programs. Some as low as $4 or $5 each. Salso ask his doctor if there are any manufacture offered help for these.

Your son can call Any Baby Can, ###-###-####, and ask for the Prescription Assistance Program. While most of their programs are for kids with special needs and the families, PAP is not. They work with and access all the pharmaceutical foundations for prescription medication and refills. It's a terrific program Good luck!

Have you tried going through University Hospital's healthcare program with Carelink? If you qualify, he will be able to make payments toward his healthcare and medications as well as get discounted medications.

I know there is a Carelink office off of Rector street, right behind North Star Mall. That may be your best bet, otherwise he could contact the pharmacies to see if they have any discount programs...but they will probably won't be as beneficial as the Carelink program.

Also, you can try for temporary disability or regular disability, which usually includes medicaid, which will cover the cost of your son's medications and healthcare; again, just need to determine if he qualifies.
