Lost My Insurance How Can I Get My Depo Shot?

So yah!! my hubby got a new job!! WOOHOO BOOO!! we lose insurance for 3 months. It doesn't start til February 1st!! YIKES. So that being said how can I get my depo shot cheap?? I can make a nurse visit with my OB and it will cost me $35 I believe, but Target told me that retail the med will be close to $70. I can't afford that right now, because since my hubby just started the place where he works they only get paid once a month. NO INCOME til November 1st :( Maybe someone can tell me the last day I can go get my shot without messing up my whole schedule? My last shot was on August 1st. Thanks so much in advance!

EDIT: The nurse visit at the doctor is $35 (that is the cash discount) for them to inject the shot and I still have to bring them the shot from the pharmacy. My doctor's office doesn't carry the shot I have to bring my own. The shot it self is retail $70. I totally get the $105 would be way cheaper than a baby, ( i barely have enough money to get gas for the next 2 1/2 weeks) but I don't just take the shot for the birth control, its also because I have life changing heavy periods. Like I literally couldn't walk 20 feet before I needed to go to the restroom (gross I'm sorry) That's what they have told him about his check and my mom works for the same place, and some one new just started yesterday and he will get paid on Nov 1. IDK ???

What can I do next?

Call Planned Parenthood and ask them how much they will charge you sliding scale for the depo shot. Explain the situation. I bet they can help you. Good luck.

Is Planned Parenthood an option for it? Either way, $35 or $70 is a heck of a lot cheaper than a baby is.

Absolutely Planned Parenthood! They will bill you on a sliding scale, as little as nothing if you qualify for their free birth control program. If not you can set up a payment plan with them.
If you have a long relationship with your doctor he/she may also agree to a payment plan if you're lucky!

Good luck!

Just throwing it out there, just in case, but - Are you sure he gets paid on the Novemebr 1st? If he JUST started, he may not get paid until December 1st. Usually on once a month pay periods, the pay period ends the 2nd or 3rd weel of the previous month and that gets pay roll time to get everything ready for the 1st pay out.

I would call the OB and ask how much the depo shot is for cash customers.

Are you using the Depo shot for control of a bad cycle, or for birth control? If just for birth control, Nov 1st isn't that far off and I don't think either of you will burst into flames if you abstain until then.

November 1st but I would think with all birth control you can stop and start back up and just use condoms in the interim.

If you can afford the OB visit, call them and ask them if they have samples. I had a three month lapse in my insurance between jobs, I told them what was going on and they had me run by the office and pick up a pack. Oh I am on Seasonale so I do the three month thing as well.

The nurse will do it for $35 and Target $70? No brainer... Go with nurse if it's for certain the exact dosage you need.

Most Dr's will offer a cash discount. Next resort, planned parenthood.

Bottom line... $35-$70 is a lot less than an unplanned pregnancy and cost of raising another child.

Negotiate and make a deal with Dr. Be honest about insurance. Don't mess up your schedule over $35.

Good luck.

If you can't get the shot, then the next logical, affordable means of birth control is condoms. I'd be willing to deal with that for 3 months to save some money & not have a baby at the wrong time.

I think he should get paid earlier...normally if you start before the 15th and it's a once a month place, you should still get paid on the first. I did when I was paid once a month.

Go to your local health department.

All of the comments to planned parenthood being shut down shows how tight the blinders are on. It will still exist, on a STATE level versus FEDERAL. Ugh, please read all of the facts before taking every commercial for face value.

Planned parenthood on a state level... that is, if the state supports it. Without federal backing, it will likely close in states that are heavily pro life.

But I agree, check with planned parenthood. They do important work for situations just like this.

I would suggest you look in the phone book for some community agencies or churches that would help with a doctor visit.

There is also agencies that will help specifically with birth control. I know we have some planned parenthood places such as birth choice that will help parents a lot.

But you should also call several of the local hospitals and ask if they have a free clinic or low cost one. Ours has one but they don't advertise or they'd have to shut it down from being swamped.

The minimum income for a month is around $600 for the whole family. If you have less than that because he has not received a check they should take you. You might also qualify for a state medical card since you have no income right now. He's working but has NO INCOME right NOW. You might get some food stamps and maybe even some other sorts of assistance to help you over the hump.

Planned Parenthood in my area has a sliding fee scale based on your income for people who don't have health insurance. Check with them.

Planned Parenthood will still charge you for the Depo unless you qualify for one of their other programs.

Call your doctor's office first and find out when the last day is that you can get the shot and make that appointment.

Options: Consider abstaining, sell something on craigslist or garage sale, do some other part-time type work, put on a credit card, borrow for 2 weeks, etc. This is not an impossible situation.

You have until Oct 31st to get your shot. Here's a link to a perpetual Depo calendar. I would print it out and keep it in a drawer or something so you can always have it.

You can always call around and check other doctor's offices. Since you are not using insurance, there should not be a problem with going to a different doctor who might be a little cheaper.
