Loves to Sleep!

I'm just curious- my baby (3 months old) is doing an awful lot of sleeping- about 12 hours at night, and three 2 hour naps during the day. When he is up, he's really only good for an hour (occasionally two, OR even 45 minutes) before he's rubbing his eyes and yawning. When he was younger, he fought sleep horribly. Do you think he is just catching up, or should I be a little concerned about how much sleep he's doing?

What can I do next?

You might want to run it past your pediatrician, but our family pediatrician assures me that babies sleep when they need to sleep, so it's probably just what he needs. If there are no other concerns health-wise, I woudln't worry.

I think this sounds great - just like what Marc Weissbluth describes in his book "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child," which was highly recommended to me. I have actually been concerned because my 3-month old stays awake for more than 2 hours at a time in the afternoon (Weissbluth says babies should never go more than 2 hours between naps).

Good luck!

Babies sleep when they need to sleep, my daughter would do this for a few weeks before she would grow...you may be buying bigger clothes soon.

If you are worried about the amount of sleep he is getting, by all means give your pediatrician a call. You can have your questions answered over the phone, or through email.

It can never hurt to get him checked out by your doctor. However, my daughter pretty much slept around the clock until she was about 5 months. My doctor said as long as her muscle tone was good that it was nothing to worry about. He said what they're really concerned about is limp arms and legs, rolling head, etc.

All babies are so different. They know when they need sleep and when they need food. If he's sleeping all the time he probaly needs it. I wouldn't rush for any concern unless there are other health issues or he seems sick.

My neighbor's one year old has only taken one, one hour nap a day since she was a newborn. It's strange but that's just the way she is.
