My son was diagnosed with a sinus infection and his ears were pink when the ped. examined them. so they put him Amoxicilin 2 times a day for 10 days. The day he finished the medication he started getting this low grade fever. He has been getting them since wed. I called the pediatrician and they said to push fluids and rotate tylenol and motrin, which we are doing. If he isn't improved by monday, then i am going to take him in to get checked out. I am just not sure what is going on with him, he is just listless and miserable. He goes back and forth from being fine to being sick. He might be getting teeth in addition to this. Do they get fevers with teeth or is that an old wives tale. Other than that I am thinking, maybe the amoxicilin didn't work. I am just wondering if teeth could be doing this as well. Thanks in advance for your responses.

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone! It is nice to have some support when you are just not sure. Well his fever broke on sunday and we took him as planned on monday. Nothing was found, so they think it was viral (I hate that explanation) He continued to not feel good until last night. He was back to his jumping all over the place self. They don't entertain the fever teeth relation at my doctors............sigh. But the bottom line is he is healthy again and I am relieved ! Thanks everyone, a big hug to you all and yes i am looking forward to summer and no more colds.

Yes, most always, they get fevers when new teeth are coming in. It sounds like they are doing the right thing, just follow up with the doctor. At this time of year, there could be several things wrong at once. He could have had a cold. He could have allergies. He probably had an infection, which may or may not have gone away without the antibiotic. It definitely sounds like the fever is from his teeth, the way it comes and goes. Just keep an eye on him. If his nose is clearing up, the infection is probably gone. Sometimes when a child gets a cold, or has sinus trouble, they can get infections. You can usually tell if it is an infection versus a regular stuffy nose by the smell of it. Infections are smelly.

Fevers are a sign of a virus, which means all you can do is let him sleep as much as possible, and make sure he stays hydrated. A child CAN get low fever up to 100.5º from teething, as well as diarrhea and some nausea in addition to the head and jaw pain. Antibiotics are used to treat infections that are caused by bacteria, but they have no effect on viri. I think that aside from the Children's Motrin, fluids, and sleep, you're going to have to wait it out.

All my kids got fevers when they teethed but I have never had them listless.. I would probably see if you can get him in the pediatrician sooner. All my kids will go back and forth as the fever breaks then returns..My daughter has a second case of strep throat in 10 days due to the medication she was taking not working so that is a possibility

Yes they do get fevers, as well as ear infections and sometimes sinus infections. Its very common for fever spikes, if it goes to high(past 101.9) call the ped. Bathe him in a warm bath, dont give him any milk products and get pedilyte in him ( to kep the nutrients in him.) It works for me. I have a 7 month old who is just starting to teeth.

Both my kids would get fevers with teeth that was at times my only way of knowing teeth were coming. Here is something my mother who was a nurse has always told me. Meds fix only one problem at a time. Our body’s immune systems weaken when we are sick some times allowing for other bugs to get in. Some times our body’s reject a medication because it wasn’t the kind that was actually needed, and some times kids just need to sweat it out of their system. Fresh air, liquids and LOTS of sleep tends to cure anything.
I get sinus infections every year (since I was a kid) at this time. The up and down of the temperature sends my sinus’s into a tornado like spin. Heat (bath, shower, packs), sleep and pillows under my head work like a charm
Don’t stress! Call the doctor tomorrow am and ask them what you should do… why pay for them to look at your child and say it just needs to run it’s course? Good luck!

A safe, non-invasive thing I have tried for earaches is to place a pealed clove of garlic in the ear canal. The garlic draws out the infection. It can be taken internally also, capsules (adults 2 up to 2 hrs. apart) or oil(warmed, 3 drops in ear)or rub on ear and below ear for earache. This can be used for a toothache or sore throat also. Place or rub on the infected area. Garlic is called nature's penicillin.

Hi L.,
I went through this reciently with my son. Children usually run a fever when they are teething. Your son could also have a viral infection, thats what was causing my sons fevers. The doctor told me to do the same thing that your doing and it will run its course. I personally would definatly take him to see his doctor if it keeps up for more than a few days this could be something more than just a viral infection or just teething. Hope I was able to help you alittle bit. Good luck.

L., I went though the same thing with my daughter. She ended up getting tubes put in her ears because her infections would not go away. Did you know that most kids are sick half the winter. Maybe now it is getting to summer, your baby wont be as sick. I have read in a magazine that fever with teething is a wives tale but it happens so often it is hard to think that is couldnt be true. If you feel that he still has a ear infection, you should take him in and get it looked at. His ear infection might be a virus, if so, there is nothing that they can give him to heal it. I am sorry, sick babies are no fun, especially when they are not sleeping at night. :)

I will not begin to tell you not to take your son's listlessness seriously or talk to your Dr about it. Personally, I wouldn't wait until Monday.

You know your son better than ANYONE. But to answer your question about a fever when teething . . . my son DID have low grade fevers when he cut teeth. It's funny, when I had him at the doctor during that time, my pediatrican's couldn't agree. It was funny, my son's primary dr. said "yes, my kids always had a fever when they were teething" and then one of the other doctor's in the practice laughed and said, "oh come on, that's an old wives tale", so there was dissention within my pediatrician's own office : )

We know what it's like as an adult to have, for example, our wisdom teeth to come in, so for our little one to be cutting so many teeth all at once, I'm sure they are miserable. Use those teething rings, put a wet washcloth in the freezer for him to bite down on, anything that might relieve the pain & pressure.

Again, from a personal side of things, I would say, go with your gut feeling & instinct. If you feel it might be something more, take him in to be checked out to make sure his ears are ok. It's always better to be safe than to be sorry and to have piece of mind. Good luck (by the way, my baby boy is now 21, in the US Air Force & I STILL worry about him LOL)
