I am 6wks & 3days pregnant and i got a call from my OB-GYN office yesterday telling me that my progesterone level is really low. So they went ahead and put me on a progesterone pill called prometrium. I was just curious as to how many other women had been put on this pill and what their outcome was. Thank You!

My doctor put me on this as well and the outcome was a big happy healthy baby! I know lots of women who have been on it - I think it's fairly common.

Congratulations!

Mine & my daughters' doctors prefer the natural compounded progesterone pills (prescription - compounded at pharmacies that do that), rather than the prometrium. They both say that prometrium doesn't even give the steady flow of pregesterone that the compounded natural forms do.

On the other hand, Insurance companies rather pay for the patented versions that they have deals with the pharmaceutical companies for.

My daughter takes progesterone because her hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis is hypofunctioning. She has to take a bunch of different hormones.

Best of luck on your pregnancy, and congratulations.

I've never used Prometrium, however, I do have to have progesterone supplements. I have a compounding pharmacy nearby and they make vaginal suppositories with the progesterone in them, that is what I've used.

I've had multiple miscarriages, all early on. I finally found a doctor that would test without 3 ultrasound confirmed pregnancy losses (I'd only had 2 that were confirmed pregnancies on ultrasound). The fertility tests revealed several things, but the most important was that my progesterone was low. Since finding that out, I have successfully had 3 full term pregnancies using progesterone supplements and no miscarriages. My oldest is 5 years old, middle child is 16 months old, and I'm due with baby number three in 6 weeks.

I know several people who have used Prometrium and have had success with that as well.

Read everything about that pill and the side effects. Then make your own choice. There may be something you can add to your diet, or a natural source that would be less chance of harming your baby. Good luck and God Bless.

E.,
congratulations.
I have PCOS and it causes low progesterone during pregnancy. I was given Clomid in 2001 and got pregnant with my first - who will be 7 on Wednesday. I was fine with her. Then I had two miscarriages because I wasn't given anything.
I surprisingly got pregnant again with my second daughter who was born Leap day 08. They put me on Prometrium right away ( 5 weeks). It made me so dizzy I could barely walk from the couch to the bathroom. But we have a healthy happy toddler.
Also, I was still nursing her. She had just turned 11 months old when we found out even more to our surprise I was pregnant again. I went for labs right away and got the prometrium. It didn't affect me at all this time. I am due in a week and a half. ( I only had to take it the frist trimester).
Good luck!
D.

I had a lot of trouble (as usual) conceiving, and finally started seeing a Naturopathic Physician. Tests showed that my progesterone was too low to even have a menstrual cycle (which I wasn't), much less to conceive. She put me on some (among many other treatments) and I conceived in 7 months, which was remarkable. Progesterone is very important - it's main job is maintaining a pregnancy. Some women miscarry repeatedly until it is figured out that they don't have enough. You may only need it the first trimester or so, because after that the placenta should be supplying enough (the ND said so, at least, so that's as long as I took it).

Isn't it amazing that they have the resources to help us have healthy pregnancies. I have not taken the pill, but I am currently on the 17 P shot that I take every week to help prevent preterm labor. Without the pill or shot we would not be able to carry to full term. With low prog levels you probably wouldn't make it very far. Ihave known people on the prog pill and their pregnancies were just as normal as someone not on it. You body just isn't prducing enough and needs help. Have a wonderful pregnancy and enjoy every moment.

I did not get a call from my OB, but I had a miscarriage between my two pregnancies. When I got pregnant after the miscarriage, they put me on prometrium to "sustain my pregnancy". It worked fine and I now have a beautiful 8 mos old baby girl.

I had low progesterone with my second child. I have seizure disorder and b/c I take seizure meds, we always do an ultrasound on my first visit. The doctor noticed I had some separation of the sac. This was caused by my low progesterone level. They put me on the prometrium for about a month and the sac connected properly and I had no complications through the rest of the pregnancy. I had to take it easy in the beginning until the sac connected properly. But with each visit, the sac was connecting better and everything was fine. I had a healthy baby girl. My sister-in-law was on it her entire pregnancy. I don't remember why or what issues she had. But she had a full term healthy baby boy. So all was well! You might ask your doctor about the possibility of sac separation and see what she/he thinks. I don't know what other sorts of complications low progesterone can cause other than the separation. That was just my experience. Good luck!

Me and my sister both had that same problem. We were both put on it and we both have happy healthy boys. Hang in there. They will probably want to check it real often. Best of luck to you.

E.,

I was on prometrium during my last two pregnancy. I had to start them as soon as I found out I was pregnant due to the fact that I had miscarried several times due to my progesterone levels being low. They were basically my saving grace that kept my pregnancy going thru the first trimester. I was able to get off them after week 14.
The only side effect was it made me a tad sleepy, so I just took them before I went to bed each night.

Listen to your Dr. and hopefully you will have a successful pregnancy. Good luck to you and your baby.

Dear E.,

After the birth of my first child, I could not maintain a pregnancy past 10 weeks and ended up having three miscarriages. I finally found an OB.GYN who notice that my progesterone was low, put on a dose of progesteroned and a baby aspirin (it helps moderlate the immune response), and 7 1/2 months later had a beautiful and healthy baby girl who is now 8 and the light of my life!

I am convinced that Had I not taken progesterone I would have miscarried again. There are no known problems with taking that I have ever read or heard of, you body produces is naturally, just some woman do not produce enough during the 1st trimester and that is a leading cause of miscarriage.

I am sure that everything will turn out just fine for you and your growing little one.
Good Luck
L. K.

I had other fertility issues but I also was miscarrying in the first weeks of pregnancies. I used Prometrium as a vaginal suppository twice a day until 14 weeks and gave birth to a very healthy baby girl 3 days before her due date. Prometrium is a natural form of progesterone. It comes from horses not humans but at least it isn't a synthetic. I've taken the synthetic before and also used the compounded suppositories before and believe me the Prometrium is much nicer to your system and easier to use. It has no side effects to the baby except that it supports the pregnancy and keeps the baby where it belongs.
