Lower Back Pain

I have been having backaches pretty much daily for a while now. When I had my son I opted for an epidural but was unable to have one successfully due to what they said was a mild case of scoliosis. They tried to inject me 4 times unsuccessfully and acutally it did cause me to have a horrible migraine for about ten days after I delivered. I guess I would like to hear from other moms who had back pain associated with epidurals or epidural complications and know how long the pain went on. I also think I might just be having these backaches due to being on the floor a lot with my son and holding him. I am not changing him or drying him off after bath on the floor anymore to try and save my back a little bit. Any advice on battling the back pain would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hi J.. I'm sorry about your pain. I've had problems with my lower back for longer than I can remember. I started drinking Xango about a year ago and it has pretty much disappeared. It's juice made from the mangosteen fruit and has been shown to help with inflamation. I actually started drinking it for my allergies and it helped my back pain too. My husband swears it's helped with his. Think about giving it a shot. Let me know if you'd like more info on it and I can tell you all about it. Here's a link if you'd like to check it out. www.xango.com

Hope you feel better soon!

Ouch!! I also have been dealing with back pain for the last three years. I have two wonderful boys, but both of them are very big (My 5 year old is 4'2" and 62lbs). My younger child weighs 35 lbs and I have so much pain in my back that I can't bend over to pick him up some times. I had been to my family doctor and all he did was give me meds that made me sleep all of the time. Well, with two little boys that wasn't an option. I started seeing a chyropractor a few months ago and have been very happy with the resaults. I can now pick up my son, and do more then I had been able to do for a while. It isn't over night. My progress has been made over three months of going three days a week. I would go in just to have them look at your back to help with the scoliosis. That could also be the cause of the back pain. Good luck.

I too suffered from back pain after epidural, but what kind of pain are you having mine was strong dull pain if that makes sense it was worse around my peroid but could happen at anytime this went on for three years and I thought the epidural was the cause, but I had other symptoms that were what people told me my body was changing with age, I would have minor cramps from time to time without it being time for my period and then they got stronger like the back pain. I never connected the two and also had headaches after my sons birth for at least a year once again I was told that is just normal. Then I started having bleeding out of no where, I was tested for fibroids and just knew that was it, the results came back neg. and so I was like what is wrong with me the back aches were getting worse, next they said you could have endometriosis and I was devastated, there is no way to test for that you have to have surgery! Well the specialist said lets try this she simply changed me birth control! I was on the patch and she switched me to Loestrin and the back aches stopped almost immediately! and all the other symptoms also, I feel fine now like nothing happened! Been on it for two months and things have taken a 100% turn around even dropped ten pounds. Not sure if this helps but I would talk to your GYN anyway because a lot of back problems and other women problems after baby are due to BC and hormone levels I realize we are all different and need different pills or need pills if we are not on them to regulate a lot of things!

I have had 5 epidurals and yes they do cause "discomfort" in your back afterwards. I would not describe it as pain though. Just a lot of uncomfortableness at times.

I practice good posture when sitting up straight, exercise is a miracle worker also. Try to remember not to use your back to bend down to pick something up, use your legs. Don't carry heavy things in the house-let your hubby do it even if it has to wait until he gets home later or earlier in the am. ( I know this can be hard-but ask for help! God did not create us to be Superwomen-just women!:-)

It will catch up to you in your midlife if you don't try some maintenance prevention now. I hope that you will start practicing something. We women can be real run down when we get older as a result of this. God bless you!

:( I'm sorry. You know, they don't tell you when you have an epidural there is a chance you might have long lasting dammage from it. I have never had good epidurals. the first was like you- they tried about 6 times but said that my scoliosis prevented it. My whole back was black from bruising and I cried myself to sleep every night for several months.

With my second I had sciatica and lots of pain after a successful epidural.

With my third I woke up in the hospital paralyzed. This was post delivery and I still had it in since I had a c-section. I had a lot of problems afterward (back pain) also. Whenever that spot on the back is pressed I am in horrible pain and that's been a few years.

So the fourth time they did it in the higher position. A few days later (about 6 or 7) I developed a spinal migraine that lasted about 2 months. I couldn't function at all.

I don't really have any pain other then if the spot is pressed.

I'm so sorry, I don't have much relief to offer you. You should tell your OBGYN and see if she can refer you to a physical therapist. He can show you some things that might help (I haven't done it but my OBGYN said her patients have had some success with the physical therapists at OGA in Houston.)

My daughter turned 3 in November and I still have discomfort and sometimes pain at the epidural site. When I was in labor I thought it was the greatest thing, but now I don't know if I would get an epidural again. I had severe back pain for about a year and now it comes and goes.

I moved during my epidural (my son is 2 now). But I also have Endometriosis and I have horrible back pain. I recently went to my Gyno for my check up and spoke with her about it, and ask could it have been from moving during my epidural. She said is is highly unlikely that it would be the cause of my back pain. But it is very likely due to caring my son and up and down all the time. So I am pretty sure you are having pain from your Scoliosis and or picking up your baby and being on the floor (stress also, and not the epidural. But you could speak with a dr to make sure. Hope you are feeling better soon.

I had an epidural with my last child and I have tremendous back pain too.I feel like my back pain is truly bad when the weather changes especially when it does alot of raining.I sometimes have to sleep on the floor to control the pain so you may just wanna think about that.I'm not sure how much pain that you be in but I do know that when my back hurts this bad I can barely move around alot of the time.Sometimes my back hurts just when I'm sitting up on my computer trying to get things done. The only thing that i do is take pain meds to stop the pain for a little while.Good Luck

J.,
My step-father also has mild scoliosis. Obviously he has not ever had an epidural. However, he is 83 and has suffered with back pain his whole life. He would take a little time everyday and lay on the floor with his legs on the couch. Picture laying there with the bottoms of your calves, up to your knees where normaly you would sit. He always said this would help with the pain. I guess it helps your spine (muscles) to relax and take off pressure from standing, lifting, etc. He also receives some sort of injections to help his muscles relax, however, did not start with these until recently. Perhaps a few minutes on the floor while the baby sleeps may help ease the pain.
