Hi Y.:
My mom's group just had a luau and we hired hula dancers! They were wonderful. They had their own Hawaiian music and gave the kids lessons. I'm wondering if you could hire just one lady to keep the costs down...
Have fun!
I just got a catalog from Oriental Trading Company that had a whole page with nothing but Hula party stuff on it. They also have a website you can order off of. I would look there to see if they have anything you would need.
You could make a "Volcano Cake". Bake a cake using a Bundt Pan and put it on top of a regular round cake. Use icing to make it look like a volcano and put it on a large flat piece of cardboard (we decorated with plastic animals and plants). In the hole of the Bundt cake, insert a tall thin jar (a spice jar type). Fill the jar with liquid red jello (use the whole pack of jello and just enough water to fill the jar) mixed with a teaspoon or so of baking soda. Then when you serve the cake, pour in a bit of lemon juice and the volcano will "erupt"! Kids love it. (You might want to experiment first with the amounts of lemon juice and baking soda. It may be that the lemon juice is in with the jello and you add the baking soda before you serve, I can't remember!)
I don't know where you like to shop but I have seen alot of great decorations & things for a Luau party at the Doller Tree if you have one near you. Hope yall have a blast!
You can find a lot of inexpensive party items at Orientaltrading.com
We're doing the same in a couple weeks. It's a splash party, so we're hooking up some sprinklers (you can get a hose splitter from the hardware store so you can connect multiple sprinklers). Plus a couple wading pools. Everyone is being told to come in their swim suit. I'm making a "pin the coconut on the palm tree" game out of posterboard and scrapbook paper. Each kid gets their own "coconut" with their name on it (made from brown paper). At Big Lots, they had a table skirt that looks like a grass skirt. We'll have a flip-flop cake from Target, and serve tropical fruit salad. With all birthday parties at our home, we hang streamers from the ceiling -- just straight pieces of streamer all over the ceiling. This time I'll attach a flower cut-out at the end of each streamer. I ordered a set of mini beach balls from Oriental trading, plus a luau music CD, and picked up lots of leis from Big Lots. We'll have the beach balls all over the place for decoration, then let each kid take one home, along with a lei, instead of a goodie bag. We'll use the luau music for limbo.
A string of lantern lights might be fun too, but not sure if I'll get those or not -- it's a day-time party, so we won't be able to fully appreciate them. A package of drink umbrellas will make beverages fun. We're also going to use them to decorate cupcakes for school.
Y. - I just hosted a luau party and have oodles of leis, mini paper umbrellas to put in drinks, and "Aloha" stick-on nametags (great for the parents) -- all are from OrientalTrading.com -- that I'm more than happy to sell you super cheap. I just bought far more of these than I needed... Poor planning on my part. Anyhow, they're unused and would be perfect for your party! I live in Allen. Just let me know! :) M.
I found a TON of Luau party supplies at the Dollar Tree. My daughter's 10th birthday party was just last weekend and we bought everything at the Dollar Tree. We had a table skirt, snack cups, tiki drinking cups, hats, glasses, lanterns, etc... Her birthday cake was decorated like a tiki head as well. They even had invitations and thank you notes. It turned out really nice and everything we bought was only a DOLLAR! Can't beat that!
Don't forget to check Dollar Tree. Last time I was in, they had a whole aisle of luau themed stuff.
Hi Y.,
My sister did a luau party for her son and got her decorations at the dollar tree for really cheap.
Have fun!
Check www.orientaltrading.com They have a lot of blowup luau stuff. Safe for little ones.

I had a Luau for my 2 year old last year & the blow up pool was a hit!!! I tried to get some hula dancers at the last minute. Having hula dancers at the party will really be a great feature & so fun for the kids.
Oriental Trading has a ton of Luau decorations and favors. Costco also has this wonderful ice cream dessert that is served in shells of fruit. They are awesome and would go great with an luau theme. They come in an assortment of coconut shells, orange shells, pineapple shells, etc.
If you need invitations I would be happy to put something together for you www.WorksofaWink.com
Hi Y.!
we just had a luau party and walmart has a whole 2 aisles of decorations right now, from pinatas to leis and grass skirts, even a limbo game. sounds like a lot of fun for the little ones! hope you guys have a blast.

They have a lot of decorations at Hobby Lobby and the Dollar Tree that I just saw recently. Cute flamingos, stripes, and flower decorations. You could make some fruit kbobs with some kind of fruit dip.
Oriental Trading has all kinds of parties decor, favors, etc. for almost any kind of party you would want to have. Here is the link for their luau stuff:

We are doing this next month for my daughters birthday. For entertainment we are sitting up a slip and slide outside for the kids (toys r us has a great one that blows up so the kids dont get hurt for $30), doing the limbo, a pinata, and the best is filling up two small, round inflatable pools with sand and giving each kid a bucket and shovel (their favor) and dividing them into two groups for a sandcastle contest. For food we are making the kids a fun tropical drink and serving it in plastic coconut cups(party city) that are their favors, hot dogs on the grill, fruit kebobs, and gold fish served out of a sand bucket with shovel. Decorations from Oriental trading, walmart, and party city.
I did one of these--get a large appliance box (fridge etc) paint red/white striptes on it, cut a door etc and make it a 'cabana', get inflatable beach balls, pink flamingos, leis, etc etc from Oriental Trading Co--party favors could be sand buckets. I hung the beach balls all around and cut them down as kids left for the favors. Mine sort of got out of hand because there was so many fun things you can do. Oh, Beach music on a jam box. I made a beach ball cake (each 1/2 made in a Pyrex 8 c. measuring cup).
Tub full of bubble juice and lots of random things to blow bubbles with. Use a plastic colander from the kitchen, funnels, straws, anything with holes in it, then let the kids dip into the solution and either blow, or fan the item around in the air to create lots of "Tiny Bubbles." Don Ho would be proud. http://www.bubbles.org/ there are a few ideas on this page.
You can check online on Oriental Trading. I remember seeing items in the magazine that I receive and online. You can also check at Party City. Hope this helps!
Shaved Ice makes the perfect treat! www.CandiSno.com
Birthday party visits start at just $50! :)
Have fun!
Sounds like a great party. You could ask folks to wear Hawaiian shirts or bright colored tee-shirts and give each guest a lei upon arriving. That would make things more festive. I would have some island music playing in the background. How about a "Limbo pole" for play purposes for the little one. (I know some adults who have gotten hurt trying to do this)) for food, you might want to make little kabobs--some with cut up fruit others maybe with a cubed ham/cheese combination. you could put them on little skewers with flowers--I think i got some at oriental trading company. Depending on the ages of the kids, you could rent a sno-cone machine or a margarita machine (without alcohol) --those are usually a big hit. Take pictures of the children in their Hawaiian garb and send them home with a cute picture frame--they had some at Dollar Tree. good luck
I saw a bunch of luau stuff at Dollar Tree last week. It was the one in Rowlett. I'm not sure if they all carry the same stuff...
Try Oriental Traiding.com you'll find all you need
games-- limbo, chalk, bubbles (bubble blowing contest),dress up w/ grass skirts etc..., musical dots w/luau music (like musical chairs but use dots on the floor)
pigs in blanket, fruit kabobs w/ no sharp sticks, get fun sip cups put their names on them-- can double as a party favor. crafts
party favor- beach balls, sand buckets
I went to the Dollar Tree one day 2 weeks ago to look for lil goodies for my son, but didn't want to break my check book & they had TONS of stuff that were Luau themed. I got them lei's, and the cutest lanterns, that were lit up by a light bulb, they had them in assorted colors and characters.
Not sure if this helps you, or if you were wanting more high end decorating ideas, but my son, neice and nephew loved everything that I got them. In fact my sister went and got some of the lanterns for her patio.
Party City and Walmart both have a lot of stuff for a luau party, esp. Party City. Have a great time!
I have done a "Hula Girl" party 2 yrs in a row for my daughter and found oritental trading to be the best pricing. We did k-bobs of cubed ham, cheese and fruit on the cute flower picks - huge hit with the kids. We also had limbo, luau tattoo station, leis and skirts for the girls, shell leis and hats for the boys. They had a blast!
I am not sure where you live but the Dollar Tree in Mesquite has a lot of luau party items. I bought an inflatable limbo stick from there last week. They also have fun cups, paper plates and other decorations. It woud not hurt to it out since each item is only $1!
J.
HI, Dollar Tree has all your decorations for a Luau. I did one a few years ago, we played limbo, We had punch with fruit in it, I put tiki torches outside, we had finger food, nachos, small sandwiches and a cake. Good luck!!
Hi Y.-
You have a great idea for a birthday party!
I would swap out the pools for a pool or two with sand in it? To avoid possible danger with water.
Don't forget leis & palm trees, etc. you can find all sorts of tropical decor at Party City.
