Lump in Breast - San Antonio,TX

Last night I jumped in the shower, and realized I hadn't done my self exam in quite a while. I washed my hair and then raised my left arm to start my self breast exam. Long story short, I found a lump. It's somewhere between a pea and a marble. I thought I was imagining things, so I finished up in the shower and then checked again. Sure enough, it was still there.

I hollered for hubby and he came in. I asked him to check for me. After being a little disappointed I wasn't getting frisky, he checked and felt it too. It hurts a little when you're pushing on it, and trying to feel around it (it doesn't move and it's hard) but it stops hurting shortly after you stop pushing on it.

What do I do? I guess I go to a gyno? Or can my PCP deal with this? I don't have a gyno and don't want to try to find one who can get me in right now (most of them make me wait 6 weeks...that's why I never set up the appointment.)

Also, should I be freaked out? There are instances of breast cancer in my family on both sides. Have any of you dealt with this? Please tell me it'll be ok.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I have an appointment today @2. I talked to my aunt and she said her lump was just like I describe mine and it was cancerous. On the other she said my other aunt's was the same (meaning slightly bigger than a pea, somewhat painful etc) and hers wasn't anything serious. Guess we'll see what my pcp says. Thanks ladies.

I also agree to call your PCP. She or he will do an exam and then will more likely than not refer you for a mammogram or other imaging even if it's most likely a cyst. I had a lump a few years ago that was a clogged milk duct. I had a mammogram and ultrasound to confirm, but it was terrifying.

If it's just a cyst, when this is over you may want to consider thermography. It's not embraced by conventional medicine but there are a lot of people in the "alternative" medical fields who advocate for this, especially with a family history of cancer. A series of scans now can set a baseline level of activity in your body and then you get re-scanned at regular intervals. The idea is that when comparing scans over time, a thermographer can pick up areas of possibly cancerous activity long before those cell changes build into something discernible like a lump. Unlike mammograms, thermography doesn't use radiation and doesn't touch your body, where a mammogram can actually damage breast tissue.

My mom has a lot of cysts in her breasts and has had many, many mammograms. She is concerned about the radiation and tissue damage of frequent mammograms so she is planning on doing thermography this year to cut down on the frequency of mammograms. Here is a link with more info if you're curious:

Best wishes to you - I really hope it turns out to be nothing to worry about!

Get a mammo as soon as you can. It is a myth that breast cancer doesn't hurt-oftentimes it does. This is the best site on the internet for information and community-if you go there with your questions you will get a lot of very knowledgeable answers. http://community.breastcancer.org/

There is a good chance that this is nothing but you should get a baseline mammo anyhow since it is in your family. If you have a regular gyno call her and tell her what's going on...they will see you soon. It only takes a long time for non-urgent issues. If not your PCP can give you a script for a mammo. Doesn't matter so much who you go through because if it does turn out that you have BC you will be working with specialized doctors and not them anyhow.

Go get it checked out. I've had a doctor find lumps and it be nothing, my mother found a lump and it turned out to be cancer. The only way you are going to get peace of mind is by getting it checked out.

Either way, you will be ok. Just one road might be harder than the other. Have faith.

I have had them and I have to watch eating too much chocolates due to cysts. I pray and anoint myself with oil and ask God to heal. I cannot tell you what to do, but if you are not sure, go to a doctor.

probably just a cyst, hon, but get it checked right away. don't faff about looking for a gyn, just go to your regular doctor who will refer you to get a mammo.
don't freak out. it's only common sense to be concerned, but remember, most lumps are just lumpiness. and if it is bad news, you're catching it very early, and breast cancer is hugely, hugely survivable these days.

Better to be safe than sorry, go get it checked out. Have your doctor check it out and if he/she is not happy with results have them refer you to the a gyno.

I too had a spot that was tender and later it wasn't. It as removed about three months later and I had radiation treatments no chemo.

So when you find something early on it is best. You can treat it and be healthy.

Go to your PCP. I had the same thing happen last November. My PCP did an exam, felt the lump and then ordered a mammogram and sonogram. It turned out just to be a cyst, which can be fairly common. Mine was also sore when I pushed on it.

Make the appointment, but try to relax and not stress too much. Easier said than done, I know!

Sounds like a cyst. I have them. Do you drink a lot of caffeine. Thats a major culprit and chocolate. All the things we love. Your PCP should be able to tell what it is without you having to find a gyno. I had to have a mamogram just to be safe but it was a cyst. Good luck. I would tell you not to worry but you will anyway so try to stay as calm as you can.

go see a doctor TODAY. My gyno told me when I found a lump that if it moves freely, it is probably a cyst. (mine moved freely) . On the other hand, I've HEARD that cancerous lumps are not usually painful. Given your family history, this is nothing to fool with even for a day. I don't want to freak you out - but you need to be freaking out. See your PCP. He will probably re-direct you.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.
