Machine Sewing Standing Up?

Do you do it? Any 'voila' easy conversions? I have a lousy back and my old 50's Kenmore cabinet (knee pedal, too) is not helping me either. I'm going to save up for a used machine (because I need an upgrade, my machine is pre-stretch knits) and create a sewing room in the basement. I already have a table which I will eventually put two pieces of foam core on for cutting, and would love to hear ideas on sewing standing up.

Any tips? Any experience with this? TIA.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I did a Google search and found a few design houses which are using this method.... Just looking for tips for at-home conversions.

I spent years working at a drafting board and always preferred the higher tables where I could work standing up. I still have an ergonomic adjustable chair so I can stand, lean on the chair or sit. I like standing up to work because it's easier to use the entire work surface. You can also walk around the table to access all sides without twisting your shoulders, neck or back. One thing I find that helps is to have at least 2 swing arm lamps so you have good lighting without shadows, no matter which direction you are working.

Instead of using foam core board for cutting, you might want to try "borco". It's a thin vinyl sheet that provides a smooth surface for drawing, but might also work for cutting and pattern drafting. Linoleum does the same thing and may be easier to find at a home improvement store.

What about using a chair like the Swopper? It's uber expensive, but if you google it, you'll see the benefits immediately.

I think as long as you place the machine high enough so your not bending over in an uncomfortable and chronically bad position, you could make it work!

I have plopped my sewing machine on the kitchen counter and worked. I have a huge island so you just put cardboard over the cook top and you have this nice working surface.

I find it works better when I am working with big items as well.

If there is an AARP site that has such questions, they may be able to help. I am an older mom and often any question about age and meds gets little response on this site.
