We like to read magazines (as well as books). Can you recommend any magazines for moms? Can you recommend any magazines for kids (ages 1 & 5)?
You probably got these responses already, but I really like reading Parents Magazine and American Baby.
One of my favorites is Wondertime. It has gret ideas for parents and lots of information regarding kids of all ages. Enjoy!
I like Parent. But my favorite magazine for moms is Wondertime. I love this magazine the best. It is relatively new, within the last year or two, but I love the way it is done and it has ideas that I love and are practical.
I enjoy Parents magazine myself. As for the kids, my 3 1/2 yr old daughter loves Wild Animal Baby. We've been reading it to her for almost 2 years now. It's geared towards kids 0-4 yrs old. I'm thinking of moving her up to Your Big Backyard which is geared towards kids just slightly older (4-7 yrs old). For you, I would recommend Self and also Working Mother - it has a lot of great things in it, even if you aren't working outside the home!
I always liked highlights when I was little. Also try Zootles on zoobooks.com which features animals, since most kids love to learn about new animals. Zootles is for a younger audience, but I loved Zoobooks. There is also a National Geographic for children.
Definitely get Family Fun. I also enjoy Good Housekeeping. My kids loved the whole series, starting with Baby Bug, then Lady Bug,then Cricket and Spider--these are general magazines, not science. They begin to add on Ask and Muse, for the science and the arts. They are pricey ($33 per year) so check them out at your library instead of buying. They are beautiful, well done, have great stories, some fun activities.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE a new magazine called Brain Child. It's filled with very thoughtful essays and almost no advertising.
It's probably the first magazine ever that I just read cover to cover within the first few days of receiving it in the mail. I laugh, I cry, I love this magazine!

my kids get the Highlights High 5 magazine. it's for younger kids. my 2 yr old likes it, but my 4 yr old loves it and looks at it over and over.
Family Fun is an awesome magazine. They give you tips, but also projects to do with your kids.
For kids I like Hilights, there are a lot of different activities that they can do, color, word search, crossword, ect, depending on age.
GO to your local library and check them out. Then it's free and they subscribe to almost every magazine you can think of.

I personaly like to read Parents, Baby Talk and Family Fun when it comes to kids and family stuff. I also get Readers Digest and love to read that, its also my husbands easy reading while going to the bathroom LOL! I also get Cooking and Good Housekeeping just for new ideas around the house.
For my kids I got them Sesame Street and Zoo Books but they loved looking at Lady Bug, Ranger Rick and Your Backyard(?) while at the Dr's office. Now that my oldest is old enough I plan on getting Highlights for her to look at.
take a walk down magazine aisle in every store to get a good idea of whats out there, different stores carry different mags. Have fun!!!

Family Fun Magazine has lots of activities for kids, recipes and interesting articles for you. If your kids like animals then Ranger Rick is a fun magazine for them.
Some of my favorites are Redbook and Good Housekeeping. I also still get Parents (even though my kids are 4 and 7).
For kids there are Highlight and they have a Highlight search and find magazine now. Also there are some like Ranger Rick (I think that is the name), query on the internet "kids magazines" and I bet you come up with a bunch. My kids love the Highlights

Mothering Magazine is an amazing publication that all parents should invest in. Great information that gets you thinking and active in your parenting!
My daughter (3.5 yrs old) was given a subscription the last two years to the Wild Animal Babies magazine - the younger kid version of the Ranger Rick magazine. I love it, she waits for it to come and "reads" it cover to cover. AGAIN AND AGAIN. We have probably all of the editions we have gotten because they are a really timeless and fun to go back and read again. There are stories, I SPY, games, songs, puzzles and always a feature on a new animal every month. She loves it and asked for it again for Christmas already this year! (A gramma does this gift - I think it is about $12-15 a year). Enjoy!
My kids love "High Five" it is the toddler version of "Highlights" (known for the hidden pictures and activities). We asked for it for Christmas from Grandma - which she loved. My 4 year old loves to see them come in the mail with his name on them! Check out www.highlights.com
Family Fun is a great one for activities, recipes and great ideas. Go onto ebay and get a subscription. I got 4 years for $6! It does take a couple of months to kick in, so until you get your first one, go to the store and get a copy. It's worth it!
Have you heard of "My Big Back Yard" (pre-school aged), followed by "Ranger Rick" (elementary school-aged)? These are excellent magazines about nature, animals, and your own back yard. Then there's "Highlights" with a more literary focus which I think is geared towards 1st grade and up. I enjoyed all of these myself as a kid!
My two subscriptions are to Mothering and Mother Earth News. These two are my favorite! Great information that will benefit your family and the Earth!
Wondertime and Family Fun are both by the same company-Disney. Family Fun has lots of ideas for families to do together. Other than church publications, its the only magazine I subscribe to.
I think it's called, "Wild Animal Babies" (National Geographic) for 0-3 years, and, "Your Big Backyard" for 3-7 or 8. Both great!
The only magazine I read cover to cover and have for years is Family Fun. They always have great ideas!
My kids also enjoy Ranger Rick magazine and Highlights, but they are a bit older than yours.

I love Reader's Digest. It has a nice mix of every kind of writing. I also like Family Fun. It's a fun magazine to choose one or two activities to do per month. I also LOVE Oprah's "O" magazine.
For kids, National Wildlife Association has one (if your child likes animals). Highlights is another good one. Nickelodeon has one that is VERY Nick centered. The Mormons have a "Friend" magazine that's very kid oriented---but very Mormon oriented.
My kids LOVE looking at CATALOGS. Fisher Price, American Girl, Gymboree, the Children's Place, etc. (I don't even know how I GOT on these lists!) and they make up stories about the people in the catalog. Sometimes we cut pictures out of the newspaper's coupon section to tell stories.
I buy the Scholastic book on CD every month (They are $17.95) and I get 4 books on CD's with "turn page cues" and without the cues. We listen to them with cues when they need something to do. We listen to them without cues in the car and I find matching songs to go along with them.
Hope that helps! I'm a teacher, too. But I teach high school reading recovery & writing remediation, so every focus at my own house is really heavy.

It is an amazing magazine for moms (and dads) that is based on essays and stories submitted by parents that depict the humorous, gritty, and beautiful challenges of parenthood with candor and grace. I ordered National Wildlife mag. "Your Big Back Yard" for my Grandchildren. It gives them hours of Pictures, stories, puzzles ETC.
"Animal Baby" is the magazine for ages 1-4, and Your Big Backyard is for ages 3-7

Highligths magazine is an activity magazine for young children.
The Wild Animal Babies that others have recommended is wonderful. My daughter loved it. Great for preschoolers and younger. My friend who teaches 1st grade said it was very well done from an educator's standpoint. It helps to develop a lot of age appropriate skills, and all the kiddos know is that they love reading it. My daughter and my neighbors haven't had as much interest in the next one up - Your Big Backyard. We might have switched her a little too soon, because now that she's 5, she enjoys it much more.
If you're looking for magazine's on parenting, I like both "Parents" and "Parenting." If you are looking for magazines for you, then "All You" is a great and inexpensive magazine with all sorts of coupons, too.
National Geographic Little Kids would be great for your 1 year old and National Geographic Kids would be great for your 5 year old.
As far as magazines for you - try the library. They have pretty much everything, and then some!
