Mama Can't Sleep!

For the past couple of weeks, I cannot seem to sleep. If I fall asleep within a reasonable time after going to bed, I wake up within 2 - 3 hours and can't get back to sleep until about an hour or so before I have to get up. Some nights, I can't fall asleep at all until just a couple of hours before my alarm goes off. I work fulltime and commute about 45 minutes each way. I hate driving in the mornings when I'm so tired. I will feel tired all day, and then in the evening, kind of "wake up" and the inability to sleep starts all over again. I did take one day off work because I was so tired, but I was not able to sleep one wink during the day. I don't really want to take any sort of heavy duty sleeping medicine, so I'm wondering if any of you mama's have any secrets that might help. I would love to hear about any natural sleep aids! Thank you so much for taking the time to respond!

What can I do next?

I like Mama L's advice. My son isn't diagnosed as hyper or anything, but boy is he HYPER!!! It's such a pain trying to get him to be still, shut up, and go to sleep!! I talked to his doctor and he said to give he melatonin. It's a natural hormone your body releases when you are in a dark environment. I love the idea of using something that is natural and produced by the body anyway..

He only takes 3 mg of it and the first night I gave it to him I couldn't believe the difference!!! We went from bed time battles and him not going to sleep until after 10 to him being passed out by 8:30!! It certainly couldn't hurt to give it a try!!

If you are anything like me, you wake, then have trouble falling asleep because you are thinking or your mind is racing. One thing I read a while back is to keep a notepad and pen by your bed and do a 'brain dump'. Quickly jot your to do list, ideas, fears whatever is keeping you up on the notepad and it really helps clear your head.

Also, try soothing music, white noise (I MUST sleep with a fan on), a light healthy snack, some lavender essential oil or scented lotion and some melatonin (natural supplemental remedy).

Melatonin works great and you won't feel like a groggy mess in the morning. I'm a HORRIBLE sleeper and use it every night and I actually SLEEP all night.

Best of luck - may we both get some quality sleep soon!!

Exercise in the morning for 15 minutes. It really helps me sleep at night to have done something like running in place for 15 minutes and getting my heart really pumping.

Seritonin is in turkey and is why most people want to nap after eating Thanksgiving dinner.

Meletonin is a close relative and works the same way. I take some medicine that has a side effect of insomnia. If I wake up in the middle of the night and my mind really gets busy I can't go back to sleep. I go out to the couch, turn on the TV low and that puts my mind at ease and I can get to sleep.

Good luck to you and yours.
