J.F.
First Add X to both sides of the equals.
you will get 8=3x-1
Then Add 1 to both sides of the =.
You will get 9 = 3x.
Last divide both sides by 3.
You will get 3 = x
J.
8-x=2x-1.....Can some1 help me I dont understand how to do this problem
First Add X to both sides of the equals.
you will get 8=3x-1
Then Add 1 to both sides of the =.
You will get 9 = 3x.
Last divide both sides by 3.
You will get 3 = x
J.
8-x=2x-1
you want to find out what x is all by itself
so here goes... 8-x=2x-1
8-x +1 = 2x-1 +1
8-x +1 = 2x
8-x+1 = 2x
----- ---
2 2
8-x+1 = x
-----
2
Now that you know what x is, try any number... say 3
to replace the x with.
8 - 3 + 1 = 3
---------
2
5 + 1 = 3
-----
2
6 = 3
---
2
3 = 3
Since one side is 8-x and the other side is 2x-1 and they are joined by an equal sign, you know you can do the same thing to both sides and they will still be equal.
if you add x to 8-x, you get back to 8. Do the same on the other side and you have 3x-1. So 8=3x-1
now add 1 to both sides and you have 9=3x
What number times 3 is 9? 3
So x must equal 3
You can check your work by plugging 3 in for x
8-(3)=2(3)-1
5=5
so it checks!
8 - x = 2x - 1
+x +x (add x to both sides)
8 = 3x - 1 (you get)
+1 +1 (add 1 to both sides)
9 = 3x (you get)
(1/3) 9 = 3x (1/3) (multiply both sides by 1/3)
3 = x (you get)
The way I learned it is easier. Unfortunately, teachers usually want you to "do the same thing to each side" these days, which isn't as fun and often ends up involving more steps. But here's my way.
When you move a number to the opposite side of the equal sign, it changes it's symbol. Thus, if you move 8 to the other side of the = sign, it becomes -8. If you move -x to the other side of the = sign, it becomes x. If something is multiplied on one side of the equal sign, then it is divided when you move it to the other side.
You have to get all the letters on one side of the = sign, and all the numbers on the other side. So it's like this:
8-x = 2x-1
(move 8 to other side becomes -8): -x = 2x-1-8
(move 2x to other side becomes -2x): -2x-x = -1-8
(add things on each side): -3x = -9
(switch sides, switches symbols): 9 = 3x
(3x is the same as 3 times x. So
when you put 3 on the other side
it divides): 9/3 = x
(Now solve it, 9 divided by 3=3, so:): 3 = x
(or, same thing:): x = 3
OR, it can be done this way, any order will do as long as you switch symbols when switching sides:
8-x=2x-1
8+1=2x+x
9=3x
9/3=x
x=3
Get it? I probably just confused you. I tried to line all the numbers up so it would be easy to see, but then Mamasource moved the numbers out of line. When you do math everything has to be lined up, or you can get mixed up. It's easier to explain in person. But like I said, teachers often don't want you to do it the switching symbol way any more, even though it's easier.
8-x=2x-1
start by getting rid of the integers so add one to eight
9-x=2x
then add x to the other side
9=3x
then divide away the three so 3=x
detailed step-by-step solution below, hope this helps!
anytime you see an "x" or "y" or other variable, there is always a "1" ahead of it, because 1 multiplied by anything is the same number. so the "-x" above is really "-1x".
second rule is that in order to solve, you need to group the x's and y's and numbers together. if you are solving for "x" as in above, you want to end up with "x or variable = number "
third rule is that you in solving you apply the same function to each side of the = sign. i know that doesn't sound intuitive, but see notes below..
8-x = 2x-1
[ first step, subtract 2x from each side to get the x's all on the left of the = sign ]
8 -x -2x = 2x -1 -2x
[the 2x on the right cancels out, and the "-x -2x" on the left turns into -3x]
8 - 3x = -1
[now subtract 8 from each side]
8 - 3x - 8 = -1 - 8
[the 8's on the left turn to zero]
-3x = -9
[now divide each side by -3]
-3x / -3 = -9 / -3
x = 3
So put ad +1x to the left and right sides of the equation: 8-x+1x=2x-1+1x and you get 8=3x-1
Now add +1 to both sides of the equation: 8+1=3x-1+1 and you get 9=3x
Finally, divide both sides of the equation by 3: 9/3=3x/3 and you get 3=x
and that's the answer...just remember to add/subtract/multiply/divide the same on both sides of the equation and you've got it!
Oh God, please ignore my answer. I totally read it wrong.
Hi B.,
You have to get the like number together first.
8-x=2x-1
8-x+1=2x-1+1(you have to add 1 to cancel out the negative one. What you do to one side you have to do to the other)
8-x+1+x=2x+x(adding an x to cancel out the -x)
9=3x(now, to find out what x is divide by 3)
3=x
8-x = 2x -1
-x = 2x -9 (you subtract the 8 from both sides)
-3x = -9 (you subtract the 2x from both sides)
x = 3
X is 3. X stands for a number. You have to figure out what number makes sense. The = sign means the answer needs to be the same number on each side. In this case 8-3=5 and 2x3 is 6. 6-1 is 5. So 5 is the same number!
How you can solve:
Start with one side with the goal of moving the 'x' to one side of the equation.
So if you start with the left side, 8-x, you need to remove the -x by adding it to the right side (hence, +x), as well as zeroing it out on the left side so that you only have the 8 on the left. Best to write it out so you can see it step by step
8-x + x = 2x-1 +x
8 = 3x -1
Now focus on the right side, we still need to isolate the x and move the -1 by zeroing it out and taking the -1 and 'adding' it to the left side of the equation.
8 + 1 = 3x -1 + 1
9 = 3x
Now you need to get to just X, not 3x, so to make it just a single x (1x), so you divide the right and left sides by 3:
9/3 = 3x/3
3 = x
And there's your answer!
Hope this helps and good luck!
8-x=2x-1
+x +x
8=3x-1
+1 +1
9= 3x
/3 /3
3=x
I was a tutor in college so the first thing you do is collect like terms on one side of the equal sign. Move the "x" over by adding x to both sides. Now you have 8=3x-1. Add 1 to both sides to have the number on the left and the unknown on the right, 9=3x. Solve: 9/3=3x/3, so x=3.
Hi,
you combine anything with an x and anything with an alone nujmber. Once you move something from one side of the = to the other it's sign changes. Move the -x under the 2x. The -x becomes a positive x so it is 2x+x. When you have a letter alone it is the same as 1x. So it is 2x+1x=3x.Now move the -1 under the 8.It goes over the = so ot becomes a positive 1.It is now 8+1 which is 9. Your answer should now look like 9=3x.You now have to divide everything by 3. What you do to one side, you always have to do to both. You divide3x by three.3x/3. so that leaves you with 1x or just x. You divide 9 by 3. 9/3. witch is 3. your answer should look like 3=x.
You have to get all of the x's on one side and the numbers on the other side. In order to to do that you change the sign when you move them.
So it looks like this:
8 = 2x+x-1
then add the x's together.
8= 3x-1
then you have to get the numbers on one side. So when you move the number, you have tocjange the sign also. Looks like this:
8+1 = 3x
add the numbers:
9 = 3x
then you have to get the x by itself. In order to do that you have to divide by 3. Now what you do to the x side you also do to the number side. So you have to divide by 3 on both sides. Looks like this:
9/3 = 3x/3
when you write it out it looks better. 3 divided by 3 is always equal to 1. And 9 divided by 3 is equal to 3.
3 = x
now you can check to see if this is correct by placing the number 3 where you see x in the original problem!!
8-3= 2(3)-1
5= 6-1
5=5
does that make sense??
8-x = 2x-1
You need the variables on the same side +1 to both sides.
8-x+1 = 2x
Now add x to each side.
8+1 = 3x
So
9 = 3x
x=3 because 3x3=9
My son did the problem
8-x = 2x-1
+1+x +x+1
9 3x
-- = --
3 3
3=x
he did this in 2 seconds
Good luck D. mom of 4
8-x=2x-1
First you want to get all of your x's on one side. Add x to 2x
8=3x-1
Then you want to combine your whole numbers on one side by adding 1 to 8
9=3x
Then you want to divide both side by 3 to solve the problem, because you always want to do the opposite operation.
9/3=3x/3 this clears the x
answer is 3 = x
Just remember to isolate the variable to one side and try to keep in positive. Then do the opposite of operation to clear the x. Since 3x means multiple you have to divide to get x be itself. What you do to one side you must always to to the other. Hope this helps. Let me know if you are still confused.
R.
You are trying to find the value of "x". 8-3=5 and 2 x 3 =6; 6-1=5. Therefore the value of x is 3
the answer is x=3 I think!
Hi B. G-
This is one of THOSE algebra problems. I wrote it out, let me see if I can put it on paper. The goal is find X.
8-x=2x-1
+1 Move the 1 to the other side- it's a balance
9-x=2x
+x Move the misc x over to create one side of x's
9= 2x+x (or 2x + 1x)
9= 3x
divide 9 by 3 to single out the x's
9 divided by 3 =3
so 3 = x or x = 3.
Hope this is helpful!
