The best thing for her to do is apply for medicaid immediatly. I was on medicaid for 3 pregnancies but I don't know the income requirements are but I can tell you how to apply. If she lives in Collin County the Human Resource office is located in Mckinney. When she goes to fill out an application all she will need is to know her income and household expenses like electricity, phone, and water bill. When she goes to apply she will fill out the application which she will submit and then be called in for an appointment. They say it can take up to 6 weeks to be called to set up an appointment. When she goes for her appointment she will need to provide proof of income in the form of paycheck stubs from the past two months.
One woman said she had trouble with not having the biological father involved but they never asked me about the fathers involvement.
Medicaid covers pregnant women up to 6 weeks after she is pregnant. If she is covered by medicaid when she has the baby then the baby will be automatically covered by medicaid for the first year of life (in Texas, by law, the mother's insurance is required to provide this coverage). After that she will have to reapply for medicaid and if medicaid will not cover the child then she can apply for CHIP (children's health insurance program).
If she is approved for medicaid she will have to select a doctor that accepts medicaid. The medicaid plan she chooses will give her a list of doctors to contact to find out is they currently accept medicaid patients. She will deliver at the hospital where the doctor is on file.
She can also apply for WIC which will supply milk, cheese, peanut butter or beans, and cereal for her before the baby comes and will supply even more for her is she nurses or formula for the baby after the birth. It is easier to apply for WIC if she is already approved for medicaid since she will automatically qualify. However, if she does not qualify for medicaid she may still be able to receive WIC benefits since the requirements are slightly different. If she chooses to nurse they will provide support for her is she needs it. In Collin County there are WIC offices in Wylie, Plano, and McKinney - I prefer the McKinney or the Wylie offices.
I think I have typed everything I know. If you have more question feel free to email me, I may be able to answer them.
It's unfortunate that it is so difficult to get insurance for pregnancies. I hope things work out for your cousin. Also, if she does not receive Medicaid before the baby arrives she can apply for assistance for the bills afterward by going through the same application process.
