I am doing the Medical Assistant program at Banner Institute and also complete in October. Doesn't Olympia require externship that would allow you to gain experience? They should be able to place you from what they told me when I was shopping around for schools. Check with student services, because I checked Olympia out when I was looking for a school, and they told me that they offer career placement for their students. I'll ask around at my school to see what the protocol is and get back to you.

Hi N.! I am a Recruiter for a healthcare organization in the suburbs. I just interviewed a graduate from one of the Olympia College programs, and she was disappointed in the program. I sure hope you have a good schooling experience. At our hospitals, we typically do not hire fresh students from the billing/coding program into a coding or collections position. We require previous experience, and our coders have to be a CCS, RHIT, or RHIA plus have previous coding experience. However, I do hire new grads into a Registration position and I think this is a great starting position because it allows you to learn how the entire billing process begins, etc.. Then you can always learn and possibly promote into a patient financial services position and eventually learn the coding component. I don't want to sound discouraging, but I am being honest on what experience our hospitals require. You may find physician offices to be more open in hiring fresh grads from the billing/coding classes into their billing/collection/coding positions. I hope this helps! Feel free to email me with questions.

Why not send your resume to PDN (Professional Dynamic Network) www.pdnseek.com to start. I work at one of the larger hospitals in the city and we are always utilizing contract coders (In & Outpatient). That could be a good way to gain experience. Good luck.

I used to work for Dr. Finklestein at Women's healthcare of Illinois in Evergreen Park, located on the corner of 95th and Western. I worked there a few years ago and I assisted the Billing manager. Her name is Colleen. It was a wonderful place to work and my boss was very nice and understood that things happen when you have a child. I'm not sure if they are hiring, but it doesn't hurt to call.
