We are expecting our second son in a few months and can't come to an agreement on a name. My husband is dead set on naming our son Maize. I like it as a middle name, but not so much as a first name, partially because I can't think of a middle name that flows. For some reason I think a 4 syllable middle name goes well with a 1 syllable first name. Like: Maize Alexander (but I don't like this one!) I searched 4 syllable names and don't really like any. Any recommendations? Thanks!!!
Probably not what you want to hear, but here goes. Parents try so hard to be original with names to distinguish their child...understandably so. As a child with a rather peculiar name...I have had 40 years of mispronunciation and issues. To this day I have given up on trying to set people straight on what my name really is (about 1 in 20 pronounce it correctly - even after I say it, they think they heard me wrong and say it incorrectly).
It drives my friends and family CRAZY when others mispronounce it on my behalf. I have just bit the bullet, and my tongue, thousands of times when the same jokes get made on my behalf because of my name. THANKS MOM! I generally get tired of the humor and snap back that my mom says she found it in a book, but I am fairly certain she made it up as a cruel joke to cause me eternal discomfort (that usually ends the topic). I also love the fact that foreigners assume I am a man...and most people who have never spoke to me directly assume I am ethnic.
Being a child is hard enough...be careful about being too creative or different - NO ONE likes to be teased or ridiculed..especaily not for something like their name.

For me, Maize is a girl's name.
In fact there is a prominent woman in my State, that is named Mazie. but pronounced "Maizee".
and in a cartoon I saw before, a kids cartoon, a girl character. But spelled Maisy, I think.
Maybe confusing name... for a boy.

Why does he want to name your son Maize?
Does he know it means corn?
In school, the kids may call him Corny.
Is it an old family name?
I wonder if you and he could agree on it as a middle name,
and then, when he's older, his name could be (for example)
J. Maize T_____, or R. Maize T_____, etc.
How many syllables are in your last name?
Four-syllable names are pretty rare.
Really.
Sebastian
Antonio
Bartholomew
Lafcadio
Mercutio
Jeremiah

If he does anything internationally when he is older all the Europeans will wonder why he is called corn. I have only heard the girl's name Maisy (and Maisy Mouse books and tv show).

I wonder why your husband latched onto that name. It means corn. Not that there's anything wrong with wanting a unique name, it just seems random!!

I don't like that name, sorry! But most importantly, you don't like it, so don't compromise!! Both you and your husband should start over and think of names that you both like - otherwise you will resent him for giving your son a name you don't like. If your husband still insists on Maize, definately make it his middle name. He will thank you one day. Best of luck and don't give in to his first name being Maize - you will never forgive yourself.

For middle names we like to use family names. My oldest has the same middle name as dad, which is also his great grandma's maiden name, and our youngest shares his middle name with both great granddads and grandpa. I agree with you though, I do not like the name maze or maize for a first name. I do not think I would want to name my kid after corn.

You know, my dad wanted to name me M. and my mom wanted Denise as my first name. So, my name is M. Denise but my mom's side of the family nicknamed me Niecy because she really wanted Denise to be my first name.
I said all of that to say this, tell your hubby Maize would be better as a middle name. Select the first name you want but perhaps Maize can be simply what you call him at home, sort of like a nickname. That way, it's sort of a win/win. (But technically, you won!!! LOL) When he grows up, he'll use the name he prefers. Like now, I stopped all family and friends from calling me Niecy. I never liked it anyway!

How often does anyone use their middle name? My kids recently asked what theirs were! Maize is a noun. and if kids don't know the corn meaning-they know the game you find your way through. Your son has to grow up w/ this name. He will be 50 yrs old one day. I like the way Maize sounds, but, even I would be afraid of the teasing my son would endure. It is more important that the 1st and last names sound good together.
i would try and get him to put is as a middle name. you can always call him maize at home and introduce him as maize. but at school he will get teased.
here are my names i like with maize as a middle name-
Edward Maize
Austin Maize
Jeremiah Maize
Caleb Maize
Jacob Maize
Benjamin Maize
Here are some with Maize as the first name-
Maize Ryan
Maize Robert
Maize Richard

It reminds me of corn and a funky yellow colored crayon. And yes people will call him maisy! I too have an oft-mispronounced and misspelled name and would never do it to my children. I like mayes better, I love Hayes! Definitely best as a middle name if at all. The "corny" comment cracked me up! Print these and show them to your hubby so he can see the majority reaction. :)

Sorry, I'm with the mom's who don't like Maize for a boy (or at all for that matter). It will be mispronounced, sounds too much like a girls name, and means "corn". Please consider what the child will go through with teasing, etc. at school if you saddle the poor kid with a strange/unusual name. Other kids can be really, really cruel. The advice I was given in picking a name: open your back door, pretend your 5 year old is a block away, yell the name you are considering 4 or 5 times VERY LOUDLY to call him home for dinner; if you don't feel totally stupid yelling that name for all to hear, then go ahead with it. Good luck.

I also agree with several other mom's and don't like the name. Kid's can be so cruel and they can have a field day with Maize. We named my son Colin and people are teasing him about the Colon in your body. He can handle it, but I wish I thought of it before I named him.
One mom said even more importantly yuo don't like it and that's really true. Listen to your intuition and enjoy your baby when he's born! Happy labor day!

ooooh, I gotta be honest, I think that is a ridiculous name if you can talk your husband out of it (since you don't seem so attached to it yourself). Seriously, I immediately thought of CORN. Maize is corn. Second thought was that little cartoon GIRL mouse, maisy. That's a terrible thing to do to a little boy.
I think the middle name of maize would be fine, save him lots of embarrassment in the future.

It's a cute name but try to research it more. What is you last name initial? Is your last name short? Long? Think of your son being a president, doctor, fireman or a teacher etc. His business cards, resume, name plaque outside his office etc. Does it have a ring to it?

Please don't name your son this as a first name. If you must, only as a middle name, and only if you spell it Mayes. He is bound to be in for a rough time with kids in school if you name him Maize.

I like the name Maize. When a teacher reads his/her name on the roll, they may think of "may-zee" which is a girl's name. When I saw your post I thought of a book I read where the girl's name was Maisy Grace (Amazing Grace) which was very adorable. For a boy, perhaps okay. It's up to you.
I do agree that 3 or 4 syllables sounds good with the one syllable first name. I really like Maize Alexander eventhough you said you didn't. I like some suggestions already posted. What about Maize Benjamin?

I know this doesn't help, but when I read your post, the first thing to pop into my head was "Zing". You know Maize Zing _______ & I just found it really cute & funny. Best of luck with your knew son. My favorite boy name is Colby Wyatt. Husband liked Rowdy Vernon. we went with Kalen Scott. Kalen pronounced K Len & neither of us thought it sounded like a girl's name until after the deed was done. I used hormones as my excuse & stupidity as my hubby's. LOL. Son likes his name so no harm no foul.
