Midwife in Dallas

I'm six weeks pregnant with my first child. I'd like to have a natural child birth (preferably water birth). I'm 35 and overweight....what some may consider high risk. I have an appointment set with the remaining midwife at Baylor's Women's Alliance (Cecily Floyd), but I've never met her and want to explore my options. I also am not sure Baylor will let you birth in the tub. Does anyone have an experience at Baylor they would like to share as far as the water options? I would like to deliver either at a center or a hospital, preferably a center. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what Midwife might accept "High Risk" and has delivery options outside the home. I'm super duper stressed about this and would really like to find someone soon! Help!

What can I do next?

*** Yes, I did go to the Birth and WOmen's center, was transfered, and NOT because I asked for it... I was crying begging to stay, and NOT because my baby was in distress... I came close to having a c-section, just because the midwife "felt" like I had been in labor too long and wasn't "progressing" according to their timeline. In researching even more with my second one, I realized my "complications" at the hospital could have been avoided had I been allowed to continue laboring naturally. I was enchanted by the beautiful birth center, it really is gorgeous, but unless you have super easy, short labors, you will likely be transfered. I also have heard great things about Gentle beginnings... It's just worth doing some research, that's all I would say, I had people warn me about Birth and WOmen's Center but was blinded by the idea of the beautiful birth center that I completely ignored them and I regret it. As Elisa said, TRUST YOUR GUT FEELING***

April Pierce, she works out of a birth center in Grand Prairie, she is super sweet and has years of experience with all kinds of births. She delivered my second baby and I love her!

I had care with Cecily for part of my first pregnancy... she is nice, I just didn't really feel comfortable with her and then she ended up having surgery and a different midwife took her spot. Whatever you do don't even try the birth center next to Baylor, they are very medically oriented and at the first sign of "delay" they will transfer you over.

Any way, the number for April is ###-###-####.

Good luck and congratulations on your pregnancy!!

There is a midwifery around the corner from downtown Baylor hospital. They stay in close proximity to the hospital in case of emergency. I would check with them. They do allow you to birth in a tub.

Just because you are 35 and overweight doesn't automatically put you in the "at risk" category--so don't worry just yet :-). I would definitely recommend The Birth and Women's Center, where I had both my kiddos, it was the most wonderful experience! www.birthcenter.net is the website. The center is in Baylor Dallas' backyard, you can actually see Baylor's sign from the exam room. When a birth mom comes in for delivery, there is always an OB at Baylor on-call, just in case a transfer is necessary. I never had to transfer, but my friend did and it was very quick and professional. No complications at all. They (the midwives) have very strict guidelines when a transfer must take place and they take them very seriously there. Cherie, the main midwife, has been assisting in births for over 35 years. Call them for a tour! Feel free to email me personally and I'll answer any questions or share my birth stories. Congratulations and God Bless!

I delivered at Birth and Womens Center (the one next to baylor that Ceci does not like). It was the best experience ever. I was on bed rest for 4 months and they managed my pregnancy very well. I had a perfect delivery, and excellent recovery, then home to sleep in my own bed with my sweet little girl. I dont know if Ceci has ever delivered there but I know from my experience and my friends (not one of us had to transfer) that they work very hard to give you the best natural birth. I know they only transfer if the mother wants too or if they feel the baby is having problems. They have been doing this for a long time and they do not jeopardize the health of the mother or the baby. As a health care provider I appreciate that, they always put my mind at ease. Any how, check them out www.birthcenter.net . We are getting ready to try for our second baby and wouldnt go anywhere else.
Good luck!!

I too have had several children at the Birth and Women's center just down the street from Baylor Dallas. I have to warn you that they seem to have changed in the past several years, so before you decide on them, go to the tour, interview the midwives, and TRUST YOUR GUT FEELINGS. I have heard too many people (including myself) who recently have had bad experiences with them.

If you'd like to look into other birth centers in the DFW area, here are the ones I know of (and have heard good things about):
Inanna Birth Center, in Denton
Gentle Beginnings Birth Center, in Hurst or Bedford
Allen Birthing Center, in Allen or Plano
Lovers Lane Birth Center, in Richardson

I second Family Centered Maternity Care. Joyce assisted with the births of my last two children. I will go to her again if I have any more children.

I was 35, obese and pregnant earlier this year, and the fantastic ladies at Family Centered Maternity Care were wonderful! Their website is: http://www.fcmcdallas.com. They are located in Garland, but right on a major road, so they're easy to get to, and have all the options you've mentioned. I hope you have a great pregnancy and birth (and of course, a wonderfully healthy baby!) :)
