Midwives Vs. Ob

I've heard wonderful things from moms who've used midwives. I just found out I'm pregnant with #2, and I'm considering using a midwife. My biggest concern is that I had a c-section with my son, b/c labor wasn't progressing and my son's head was getting stuck in my pelvic bone. I've heard that most dr.'s will only consider a vbac if the circumstances are great...which concerns me. I don't want to go with a midwife if I'll end up going the hospital anyway and having a csection again. The fact that I've had a csection makes me want to go to an ob who is open to trying for a vbac if the situation is good. Has anyone been thru this? What was your decision and why? How happy were you with your decision? Thanks in advance!!

What can I do next?

I went with doctor Fred Cummings in Denton for the same reason - I wanted a VBAC, but the 2500 that the midwife would charge did not go against my deductible if I ended up with another emergency C-section. Dr. Cummings supported VBAC all the way. (2005 - 2006)

B.,
I had a midwife with my first, had better insurance. I delivered at the hospital so it wasn't a problem if I needed to have a c-section. I like having the midwife over the doctor because she stayed with me, the doctor check me out once then came in when it was time to delivered. The midwife left for about 2 hours but she knew I was going to be there a while. I had great nurses while she was gone. I really had a great experience and if you can find a midwife, I'd go that route.
God Bless!

MIDWIVES!

I've had midwife attended births for all four of mine, three were at home, one was at Birth and Women's Care in Denton. All were fabulous experiences. I can recommend Bonnie Kitchen with Eden Song Maternity 100% (www.maternityservices.com), and also Jean Sala and the other midwives in Denton (www.inannabirth.com) are great too!

I was one of Lindsay's patients but she's leaving the practice (career change, I think). The other midwife, Jane Singer, is good too. Jane actually delivered my baby in April 2008 b/c Lindsay was stuck in traffic. I'm seeing her now, since I'm due again in November too! Jane is very thoughtful, considerate, returns calls promptly, and really takes the time to make sure all of your questions have been answered. I think a VBAC delivery is entirely possible with an OB but you might have better chances with a midwife. Generally I think doctors are more cautious. Not that midwives are careless, far from it, but doctors are trained to do surgeries so they are approaching you from that mindset and want to use that knowledge. I think the only thing a midwife can't do that a doctor can is surgery. In my opinion, that also means that a midwife has the time to spend with you and stay by your side while you're in labor while a doctor is going to have more time-constraints because of scheduled surgeries, etc. I have met three of the doctors in practice with the midwives and have been very happy with each, especially Dr. Kurian who did a surgical procedure for me. The doctors are some of the best (according to their website), so in the event that you would need a c-section, you could know that you did everything you could for a VBAC with the midwife but would then be in good hands with a doctor. Good luck to you and congrats!

From my research when I was pregnant with number 2, I learned that you want to make sure the births are at least 24 months apart for a VBAC, and you will need to labor/deliver unmedicated. My ob's office was totally open to a vbac, however my births were just shy of 14 months apart so I opted for the c-section due to that being 10 months short of recovery time needed. I go to Craig Ranch OBGYN and they have two midwives on staff. I highly recommend them.

I LOVED my midwife. My labor was not progressing either and had I gone with an OB, I'm sure I wouldve ended up with a c section as well. But my midwife held on, induced me,coached me, motivated me, and I delivered a healthy baby boy after 26 hrs of labor.
The midwife I used delivers at Baylor Hospital and there are Dr's in the group in the event that you would need an emergency c -section.
I used Lindsay at Women's Health Alliance. I think you'll like her. :-)

I had a midwife AND OB with my first. We'd wanted a home waterbirth. I had complications that caused me to need an emergency c-section (long story) at my 42nd week. We're pg with #2 now, due in Jan 2010. I am starting with Dr Cummings and as long as all looks well I will then transition to my midwife April Pierce with Family Birth Services. She was not my midwife last time. But she has done HBACs for my best friend who can not say enough good about her. VBACs often have uncoordinated contractions and its important to have a care provider who recognizes that and knows how to help. Although we have really good insurance, we will be paying $2500 to $3000 out of pocket over time for her services. It will be worth it to me if I can have the experience I hoped for. I would like an HBAC, but a VBAC anywhere will be better than a c/s if I can help it. BTW, my best friends first birth - the c/s was for the same reason as yours. And she birthed 2 bigger kids by hbac just fine with a mw vs. ob.
