I think babies know a LOT more than we credit them for -- because they haven't learned to communicate in English. I think that explains why they babble in their cribs. They're probably saying all kinds of profound things. We just don't understand them!
Rule of thumb as I recall is word/person/item recognition comes around 8 months to a year.
Kids who talk early -- it doesn't necessarily mean they are any different than kids who don't talk early.
They just are 'talkers!'
