Milestones for an 8 Month Old

My son will be 8 months old this Friday and I am just wondering when other peoples babies did things. He has been rolling all over the place since about 5 months old and started sitting unsupported at 7 months but he hasn't started crawling yet. He will get up on all fours and rock back and forth but that's about it. Since he was born he has been able to bear weight on his legs and when we hold his hands he walks by himself. I know every baby is different but I am sure a lot of moms compare babies. My sister in laws friend has a baby 3 weeks younger than my son and he has been crawling for awhile now. I've heard that some babies skip crawling altogether and just start walking. My husband started walking at 9 months. Any advice anyone has would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

What can I do next?

My daughter is a little over 8 months now and she's no where near crawling yet. She rolls from tummy to back when she feels like it, but not back to tummy, doesn't get up on hands and knees, but has started climbing on me when she's on my lap. I wouldn't worry about where you son is at right now. That sounds normal. If you're really worried, you can always ask his pediatrician if he/she is concerned about his development. I have friends' babies who are a little older (9 or 10 mos) and already crawling or walking (ah!) and another friend's baby is 8.5 mo and no yet sitting up. Like you said, all babies are different.

My son didn't start crawling until he was almost 10 months old. He walked by 13 and a half months and now he's 19 months and I can't stop him. He's a force to be reckoned with. Don't sweat it. He'll do it when he wants. We all worry about something. Mine still isn't talking. If it's not one thing to worry about, it's another. Thank goodness for message boards. Hope this helps! Good luck.

Hey M.,
My daughter just turned 7 months on the 5th. I'm in the same boat your in, She started rolling over about 4 1/2 - 5 months. She's starting to sit somewhat up by herself, well atleast trying to. If we hold her hands While she's standing she will try and move her feet like she's walking. But, she hasn't started to crawl yet. If you put her on her belly she'll grab the blanket she's laying on and pull herself forward. She'll lift her butt in the air while on her knees, but she can't hold herself up on her arms yet.
I've been reading all these books and stuff, and they all say that they'll crawl when they're ready. I even asked her doctor, and he said that they know when it's time so i guess we just have to wait. I know that doesn't help you.. but you could always ask his doctor.

My son didn't crawl until he was 10 mo. and walked the day he turned 13 mo. He didn't just take a couple steps and fall, he took off running. My nephew crawled at 7 mo. Every baby is different. Just enjoy it because I did the same thing at that time and now I wished I didn't rush everything.

Have no worries at all :) Every baby is different... that being said, my son skipped crawling and didn't walk until he was 13 1/2 months old. You can imagine my concern lol. He was a lazy bum as a baby... he rolled to get places and hated being on his belly. I was very bad about pickinghim up and bringing him to where he wanted to go. Once I stopped that he began to cruise for a month or so and then *finally* started to walk. My daughter, however, was walking by 9 months. Trust me, take the lack of mobility while you can! Once he starts moving he is gone :) If you are very concerned, you can always consult your ped, but he/she will likely tell you to not worry until 15-18 months (and sometimes later).

Every child is different. My oldest never crawled, but she didn't start walking until she was almost 12 months old. My youngest never crawled, she did what you call a skoot. It was funny, she looked like a monkey, she did try crawling once, but it wasn't quick enough for her. She started walking at around 9 months. Be patient, When your baby is ready, he will start crawling or walking.

Hi M.,

My son is now 10 mths and started crawling at 8mths. He sat unaided at 5 mths as well and rolled over at 2 and a half mths. Try not to worry about milestones. I'm sure he's doing just fine. He should be crawling in no time. Then, you'll never rest! Enjoy the non-crawling days for however long you may have left. :)

Hi M., This is completely normal!!! He is doing everything he should be doing. Your right some babies never crawl. Some babies crawl very early. My daughter did crawl, but not untill 9 mos, and she didn't walk untill 13 mos. Your little guy will do it when he is ready, or he will just go to walking. They always say if their is one milestone they are not reaching that is okay, it is when they cannot reach multiple milestones should you be worried. Your guy is right on track. Take care.

My son will be 8 months next Tuesday and he is not crawling either. I just make sure he gets a ton of tummy time and he will do this when he is ready. My sister walked at 8 months(or so they say) and her son did not walk until 10 months. Each child is different and when he is ready he will do it...

Hi M.,
My daughter will be 8 months on the 15th. She is not crawling yet. She can sit up and does get on all fours also. She likes to roll all over the house.
Your son will be crawling before you know it! Enjoy him now before he starts getting into everything. Once they become mobile its all over! LOL.
All babies do things at different times. My older son was 10 months and walking. He skipped the crawling stage. I also have a daughter, and all she did was crawl! She was 15 months before she even attempted to walk. Let him take his time and make his milestones.
Most babies crawl between 7 and 9 months. So he is falling right into that timeline. And you will see that he will be doing this soon if he is getting on all fours! That is the first sign that it wont be too much longer!

I am a mother of 3 kids 5, 4, and 2. My older are boys they both walked right after the turned one. My daughter was around the same time. Your son is doing just fine. Some babies go straight to walking. My daughter didn't crawl for more than a month before she started walking. She has 2 older brothers to keep up with! You'll be chasing him before you know it and you'll be wishing he was still immobile.

Good Luck!
Sam

I have two girls, 8 and 4 years old. My niece and my youngest are only three months apart (my daughter being the oldest). My niece never crawled, went right to walking. She was waling by herself by the time her first birthday rolled around. My daughter crawled from 6 months on. Although she did not start walking until almost 2 years (with the help of early intervention). I had to sit through the comparisons that my sister in law made. My oldest daughter was walking at 13 months. You're right all babies do things at different times. But I wouldn't worry about it. If he can get up on all fours and he's making the motions, he'll soon be off like a shot and you'll be wistfull of the days when he stayed were you put him. If he isn't cruising by his first birthday, definately ask your ped. about it. He/she may bring up early intervention.

My daughter was "slow" for all those milestones as well - she didn't roll around until 8-9 months, crawl until just before a year, and it took her until roughly 18 months to walk in a real way! We were starting to get worried but it happened overnight, as it tends to with kids. Don't worry, the signs are all there for your son and he will be going crazy before you know it! My daughter was always a big talker, the physical things just took a little longer.

M.,
Working with babies for years, I know better than most how there's a BIG span of time for when babies hit milestones. And yet, when my dd wasn't crawling (or even showing an interest in it!) at 9 mo, I was of course comparing her to everyone around. We go to playgroups and I point out her peers- see! Abby's crawling! But alas, she literally just began moving this week, and she's nearly 11 mo. It's perfectly normal. Many babies who move later are bigger, chubbier, and happy to sit and play with toys, working with their hands. Maia's great with sign language and manipulatives. Now that she's moving, slowly but surely, I realize that I've got to babyproof more! It will all come in time, no worries!! Enjoy every moment.

I wouldn't worry my son is 10 months old and he does all the things your son does; walking with just holding your fingers and things like that and he just started crawling a few weeks ago. Watch out because once he figures it out there is no turning back he will be all over the place and it is both fun and cute! I hope this helps you!

hello M. My name is D. I have an 8 and 3 year old girls. My oldest didn't even roll over till she was 11 months however she had open heart surgery when she was 3 months old. But as soon as she rolled over she did that when she was 11 months she wouldn't even stand on her feet but once she started she wouldn't stop. She rolled over, crawled and then walked all in the same month. My 3 year old was more like your son she rolled over probally by 3 months and crawled only for a short time from like 9 to 10 1/2 months and then walked by one. If your son doesn't crawl it is not a big deal. Actually it is probally better if u think of what is on the floor and the possibility's of him getting something in his mouth. Anyhow I wouldn't worry before u know it he will be crawling. Good luck and I am sure he will be crawling and walking before he is one.

My daughter was slow with crawling. Would you believe she actually just started crawling one week before she turned A YEAR?!?! She will be 4 this summer so I can't remember how concerned I was at the time (I'm sure I was). But she was, and still is, on the smaller side. She is very petite so I just figured, for her, that was why. But I wouldn't worry. I am sure your son is strong and healthy and hasn't started crawling for any serious reason.
Like you said, all kids are different. Both my kids didn't walk until 15 months. While my girlfriends sons all were WALKING at around 9 months!! So don't stress at all.... he'll get to crawling in his own time.

Ok..your baby is fine! My son just got up and started walking at 12 mos within a week. Don't get hang up on milestones. If you feel your baby is doing just fine, and from what I can tell he is.... then one day he will just decide he needs to go places and start walking. My now 5 year old never crawled...he just got up and walked within a week. Now my 5 month old i think will crawl really fast because he is already sitting up and rolling over...Follow your insticts. Is you baby healthy and happy? Well, there you go , he is fine! Enjoy!
