Ok i grew up as an army brat. I know that growing up my dad had money set back within the army in something called a GI or G1 bill. I was recently told that since i want to go to college i could take that unused money for myself, i am trying to figure out how or who i have to talk to, in order to find out if i can use this. Any ideas? thanks
J.

So What Happened?

Thanks to all who answered. I did find out that i could have it, but my dad would have had to been killed in the war or 100% disabled, however thankfully he is around and not disabled but it makes me inelgible for the school benifits.

So i guess i wont be going to college, since i cant afford another loan and i dont qualify for the grants. Thanks everyone

Hey there J.!! I am a military spouse right now. All I have heard is that it is still in the works for military dependents to be able to use the GI Bill.Just also wanted to let you know since you are married they will not let you use any of the benefits.

J....my guess is that you are not going to be able to access that money. My husband is retired military and I had no idea that dependents were able to use military GI Bill benefits!! ( If they can we sure paid for a lot of college unneccesarily!!! ) But, that doesnt mean that you can't come up with some scholarship money..it is out there...but for "non-traditional students" it may be a little harder to come by. Go to your local colleges and talk to one of the people in the administration and find out how to see what is out there.
Also look into JR colleges for your more basic classes...they have smaller classes and normally have cheaper tuition.
Good luck!!

You can call Military One Source, or call JAG. Either one of them should be able to tell you how to tap that money. Militaryonesource.com is a great source for all that info.

Good Morning J., the first place to start ( i think lol ) is with the Army. Or Veterans Assco. Explain what you are looking for. Have information about your father handy, his SS# Where he was stationed and his length of service etc..
Look on this site J., there is a link for transfering GI bill to dependents. Also there is a link for "DEA" Surviors and Dependents Educational Assistance Program

http://www.gibill.va.gov/

Hope this helps, Best of luck.

God Bless you

Hi J.. I'm active duty AF and unless the Army's GI Bill is set up differently (which I doubt) you will not be able to use your father's Bill. There is a new process that allows acitve duty members to transfer their Bill to their dependants but part of the stipulation is that the member is still active and has a certain amount of time left on active duty status. As one of the other ladies suggested, you should try contacting the GI Bill office directly.

Go here to read about the post 9-11 GI Bill.

Unfortunately, there are limits on when and how your dad's GI Bill can be passed on to dependents. If he is no longer in the military, he may not be able to do so. Check the VA site for all of the information. As this was just recently signed into law (this last month, actually), there is a lot to learn.

Good luck!

Whoa, wait a minute...go to the ed. center on post. They have military discounts--and SOME transferrable GI bill (depending on your husband's time in the military), scholarships and fed. loan opportunities (with less than 1%). Don't count school out. Take it from me, I've done 2 masters in 4 years...how??? Scholarships, discounts, worked part-time to cover it... If I can, you can! Message me if you want more info.
