My 7 week old daughter had what looked like baby acne. It has now progressed into what appears to be eczema. My mother in law suggested that I go off milk to see if it would go away because this happened to my husband when he was a baby. Did this happen to anyone else? how long did you go off milk before you saw a difference? Did it really help?
Thank you in advance for any insight.

So What Happened?

I thought I would let everyone know that she is doing great! I still use my regular soap, laundry soap, and downy and I didn't have to use any lotions or creams. By simply going off dairy she is 100% better. I accidentally had a little bread the other day and she broke out REALLY bad so I just have to watch what I eat.

Sounds very similar to my daughter who got acne at about the same age. She takes Zantac for acid reflux as well. I ended up taking her to the doc because the acne seemed out of control to me as it spread from her face to her shoulders, back, arms and chest. He said that really was all it was and to leave it alone cause anything you put on it might clear it up temporarily, but could have it coming back even more. He told me to cut out peanut butter entirely and cut back on dairy, but not to cut out dairy altogether. I did cut the peanut butter and cutback on dairy and it cleared up within a few days and her skin has been clear ever since.

Hi S., I know you got already some responses to this but I'm gonna give you another. My daughter is 7 months old and since she has been born she has had a spot on her face, I asked the Dr about it and she said it could be caused by a couple of things and she told me what to try so here they are....

*Don't use dryer sheets, change to dye free detergent, I'm using the downy in the white bottle not sure exactly what it is called.

* using all free and clear

* I switched to the unscented baby wash cloths huggies makes

* and also she told me not to sit her in baby bath or baby wash only in plain water wash her off and get her out, until it is cleared up.

*also she said I could put 1% cotizone on it 2 everytime I needed until it was cleared up.

I did all these things and you can barley see it. It may not be an allergy to any food you are eating but instead a allergy to detergent or fabric softner etc.

I hope this helps you in some way W.

Baby acne is very common and I have never heard of it being related to milk allergies. It will usually clear up on its own in about 2-3 months. Everything I have read says just to gently wash with a wet washcloth and avoid using any soap on the face. My son had baby acne and it then turned into eczema--dry, red, scaly patches. My pediatrician prescribed Elidel cream and it is wonderful! His skin cleared up within a week. He looks gorgeous! Good luck!

my son who is one yr old now, he had reflux and also eczema,my husband had this too when he was little. we used elidel on him and it started clearing up but his skin was really sensitive so we had to be careful on everything we used on him. it didnt completely clear until he was about 8 months old.. so it just takes time.

There is a theory that dairy intolerance is manifested in skin conditions -- one of the ways your body tells you it can't handle something is by "letting it out" through the skin. Does she have any symptoms of infant reflux? How well does she sleep?

My youngest had colic and eczema as an infant. She'd be awake at night screaming in pain and nothing would help her. I went off dairy until she was one and she was a different baby.

No I wouldn't take her off milk either, sounds like eczema which is easily treatable and very common. Your Doctor can give yor Elidel Cream or you could try some OTC creams, like Eucerin Dry Skin Cream (get the Equate brand, much cheaper) and coat that stuff on as soon as you get her out of the tub. Also be sure to not over bath, @ 7 weeks old, 2-3 times a week is fine. The more you bath, the drier the baby gets, the worse the eczema will be.

Good Luck, and when Mother in law asks what you did to make it go away, say "oh just a combination of things, and it just went away, and thank you so much for your advice"
Don't worry, we won't tell her!!!!!!

My son (now almost 2) had the same thing for 5 months and my pediatrician said it was just eczema and to treat it with Aquafor. After months of asking questions and not getting an answer I was happy with, I switched peds. The new ped told me right away that he was allergic to the lactose in my breastmilk and I should eat a lactose-free diet. I did this and it took about 1 week for his skin to clear. He still has small boughts with one spot of eczema but nothing to worry about. Once we were done nursing, he drank soy formula until 1 yr at which time he had outgrown the milk allergy and we have no food allergies now. Hope this helps :)

Hello,

My one year old now had milk allergies when he was an infant. I was Breastfeeding him. He broke out in rash ,diaper rash bad and cry alot. I had to cut all milk out of my diet. Anything (including bread) had milk it bother him. Once I did that he was fine. I took him off the breast to the bottle. It made life easier and eating easier. My Doctor told me to do it for one week to see if it makes a difference. Which it did. But he did grow out of it.

I took my daughter to the pediatrician when this happened. We did not go off milk. Use the brand name Eucerin lotion (the best one is in the baby aisle at the pharmacy). Also, wash her with dove sensitive body wash. My daughter's eczema went away quickly and each time it came back we would put the lotion on and it would go away within hours.

I don't think I would recomend going off of milk, I would first talk to her pedi and see what he/she says about it. Eczema is very common in infants these days and sometimes it clears up and sometimes it doesn't.

My daughter had infant acne, as well. I think it lasted for about three weeks before we got it cleared up. I used a drop of lavendar essential oil in a glass of cool water and wiped her face with that. It seemed like that helped it clear up. I don't think infant acne/eczema has much to do with what you are ingesting. It is a pretty common occurence in babies--I think the What to Expect Book said 40%.

Yes, I gave up all dairy while I was breast feeding my middle boy because of the same trouble. It was on the back of his head. I also supplemented with Soy formula when we realized that it was a milk allergy. He also caused me to be allergic to eggs while pregnant, the younger one too. I broke out just like the boys did.

I was off for the duration of nursing, um, 4 months for #2 and 8 months for #3.

We were already using fragrance free stuff in the wash and tubby.
