I have a DD who will be 1 yrs old this week! I was nursing her, but she stopped nursing at 10.5 mos. No way, no how will she nurse anymore. argh!!! So I have been pumping. I get about 20 ounces a day, but she drinks 32. I have been supplementing with rice milk, adding infant multi-vitamins, and olive oil or avocados for fat. I'd like to try to switch her now to organic whole milk, but how do you know if she can tolerate it? Would she get sick right away or can allergies or intolerances take a while to show up?

What can I do next?

Hi G.,

You should know within a time or two in giving it to her. I've found there are not as many allergies to milk as there are to the chemicals that are within it. My DD was diagnosed with lactose intolerance and turns out there was no problem with the lactose, simply the hormones, preservatives and antibiotics within the milk. She has alway been fine with organic...

Hope this helps.

If she's allergic to it it she likely won't have a problem the first time she drinks it. Allergies usually show the 2nd time someone has the food. There's no way to know if she can tolerate milk without first giving it to her. A reaction would be the same as a reaction to any table or baby food you've given her, a rash, difficulty breathing, vomiting etc...

I have a child who is allergic to dairy and eggs. There's really no reason to worry that your daughter won't tolerate the milk unless she has other food allergies or food allergies run in the family.

Cows milk is very hard to digest and really nor at all beneficial for children or adults. Rice milk is sugary and nutrient deficient Try hemp, almond and coconut milks(unsweetened is best) these are nutrient dense and have eseesntial fatty acids for brain development as well. Also supplementing with a DHA fish oil for children, and probiotics to help mimic what she would naturally be getting from breastmillk.

Give her a bit of organic milk a few time a day and see what happens. Symptoms can be as obvious as diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, ect or more subtle like irritability, inconsolability, foggines, really anything that is out of character for your child. If there is a problem, you should see it that day. You are her mom, you know if something isn't right. Chances are, she will be fine.

You can try putting a little drop on the inside of her wrist in the evening. Cover with a bandage so it stays in contact with the skin and check in the morning for a reaction.
Alternately, you might try fresh goat milk if you are fortunate enough to have a farm in the area. It has just about the same nutritional/fat value of whole cow but is naturally homogenized. From a molecular standpoint it absorbs more quickly and easily. I cannot tolerate cow milk (even unpasteurized), but I drink about 2 gallons of goat milk a week.

A milk intolerance will either make her have diarrhea or she will vomit it up.

Or she may have a tummy ache because of gas.

The only way to know is to give her a little bit in a sippy cup.

Has she been eating cottage cheese, yogurt, ice cream? How does she do with those?

G., I haven't read all the answers here, but I had to put my son on the 'Acidophilus' milk before he was a year old. You may want to ask your pediatrician about going that route. My ped didn't want me too, but my son wasn't tolerating anything else.

Have you given her yogurt or cheese at all? Try one of those first and she tolerates that, give her straight milk. If there is an allergy, you will notice it quickly, likely within minutes but definitely within a few hours. An intolerance may take a day or two at most to show up. Allergies will likely manifest with hives and/or vomiting and/or difficulty breathing, throat/tongue swelling, etc. An intolerance will cause her to be gassy and/or have loose stools.

If you're worried, start with a small amount to test it out.
