Milk from a Sippy Cup

I am having a very hard time getting my 13 month old daughter to drink milk from a sippy cup. She will drink water and juice from a sippy cup without a problem, but when I put milk in one, she'll take a sip, look at it funny, spit out the milk, and push the cup away. I've tried warming the milk as I do for a bottle (she drinks milk from a bottle without a problem) and I've tried mixing a little Carnation instant breakfast to sweeten the milk. Both to no avail. Any ideas are welcome.

Thanks!

I had no problem with my baby, but the girl that I babysit is 15 months and has the same issue. We just keep trying, but she won't take it at all!

I hear of this problem a lot from other parents, but my son has always been a milk drinker. Another thing you could try is mixing the milk with the drinkable yogurts for kids. It would give it a little flavor, and extra nutrition without all the added sugar of chocolate or strawberry. But, don't feel too guilty about the added chocolate or strawberry, some brands have added vitamins and minerals, so there are benefits. It's likely just a phase that he'll outgrow. Kids tend to go through picky phases, and the only ones who are truly suffering/frustrated are the parents. Good luck! Also, my pediatrician says at this point they don't need much milk anyway, so don't worry about getting her to drink too much of it anyhow.

I think this is very common... my son likes chocolate milk better and really cold. My sister does the strawberry milk, all her kids love it. My youngest is 2 now, and likes milk, but more from a glass (so do I). I watch him very closely, something about those sippy cups they don't care for milk in.
Good Luck

We had the same problem with my daughter. Her pediatrician suggested we add some Hershey's syrup to her milk to entice her to drink it. It worked and we finally weaned her off of the chocolate and now she is just drinking straight milk and has been for a couple of months. We only added the Hershey's syrup in her milk for about a month and didn't add very much. Good luck.

Personally I would just let her have the bottle. It isn't worth her not getting the milk just to take the bottle away. I wouldn't use Hersey's syrup though. If you want to sweeten it, use something like Ovaltine or Instant Breakfast like you are. The Ovaltine you should be able to mix more of the flavor in if you want instead of a dab, because it is meant for kids. Also, Pediasure is an option, but talk to your doctor before you use it to be sure. They come in flavors, and have a lot more nutrition than milk. You may try prenenting th milk in a totally different way. If you give the juice in a sippy cup, try giving the milk in a cup with a straw.

My son is the same age and we just got through! He was doing fine with milk and then he just stopped? My babysitter said that its very common. I started putting one or two drops of chocolate syrup in his milk to see if it was the flavor. The chocolate was so small that it didn't even really change the color of the milk. My doc said it was fine as long as it wasn't a lot. He drank that for a few days then I backed off the choclate and now he is back to drinking regular milk. So maybe you could try that or try the strawberry too! Good luck stay strong those kiddos have a mind of their own I have learned!!!

Try the Nuby sippy cups with the silicone-type spout. They are cheap and are really close to a bottle, so she might like that? That is what I did and just quit the bottle cold turkey. A miserable couple of days but those cups did the trick. Good luck!

This sounds just like my son! It took about 5-6 months, but he finally started drinking milk from a sippy. I tried every kind of sippy cup there is, and he still didn't like milk from it. I decided it was more important he get the dairy than not drink from a bottle, so I let him, but I still tried a sippy every so often. When he was about 17-18 months he just started drinking the milk from a sippy when I gave it to him. So I cut out the bottles, and that was it. I didn't want to push it b/c I knew that could make it worse. He did it when he wanted to. I know they shouldn't drink bottles past 1 year, but I also knew he needed the dairy so it didn't bother me so much.
