Milk in a Sippy Cup?

My son is 7 months old, I just introduced him to a sippy cup (thanks for everyone who helped me figure that one out). He hasn't mastered it yet by himself, but he does suck from it if I'm holding it, and he tries really hard to do it himself. I was wondering if the one bottle he gets a day with breastmilk should be transfered into a sippy cup. Is it a good idea to give him milk in a sippy cup?

What can I do next?

My daughters both started at nine months with a shot glass with water and milk (breast). This is an easier way to start them out because eventually you have to wein them from the sippy cups. So don't start with them.. .Give it a try..

I would definitely say yes. There is no point in continuing to give him a bottle, as you will eventually just have to wean him off of it, too. That is, if he's willing to take it from the cup. Some kids have funny associations about their milk only coming from a breast or bottle. But if he's willing, I'd go for it. It does simplfy everything. Good luck!

Yes, by all means do the sippy cup. My kids both drank out of a sippy cup from the time they were almost eight months old. He's ready for milk in it. Good luck!!

Yep...that's great...and more healthy than juice and even better for him than water! You can also try some of the straw cups since sucking is a natural response for them! I love the Nuby brand straw cups because they are dishwasher safe! Good luck!

my daughter was bf'd until she was old enough to take a sippy cup (about the same age as your son... she never would take a bottle.. lord knows we tried and tried). anyway, one point my peds mentioned to me about the no bottle thing is that transitioning her straight from breast to sippy cup, is best as you avoid the whole getting rid of the bottle thing. (though my daughter was bf'd for a few more months at night). anyway, I'd say if he's interested... go for it. a sippy cup is where you want to ultimately be anyway... so a battle free switch would be great! good luck!

I fought with my middle child, 18 months, to get her to take a bottle and she never would. She went straight from breast to sippy. There is no problem with giving a sippy your son. I had a lactation specialist tell me that you can give them BM out of a sippy as soon as they can hold their head up. I would stick to BM or water until he is 1 year old though. You probably already know that they don't get whole milk until they are 12 months old, but thought I would throw that in :o).

Good luck on the transition.

Absolutely. There is no reason why a child needs a bottle if they can use a sippy. There is no ill affects in my mind on using EBM in a cup or formula for that matter.

I personally don't put anything but water in a sippy cup. The sippy cup goes all over the house with the child and if it gets lost, you don't want to end up finding it with curdled milk or fermented juice, or worse having your son find it with curdled milk or fermented juice (he won't know it's bad to drink from it). Also if it happens to drip and it only has water in it, it's no big deal. But dripping milk or juice means it's another mess to clean. :)

I think that the breastmilk in a sippy cup sounds great. That is one of the first things that I did. I also mixed yogurt and fruit juice in a blender for my kids. It only takes a while for the baby to learn, but if you put his favorite liquids it sure helps.
