my 3yr old was in the hospital 10-31-07 for 2 days with the stomach virus, it was so awfull. any way ever since then, he has complained about his stomach hurting throughout the day. at first we thought he could be just saying it, because other than saying it hurts he acts fine, plays, no temperature good appatite(sp)?. but then it dawned on me last week maybe it could be a milk intolerence.so we eliminated all dairy for 2 days and when we gave him some yogart sure enough he complained about his tummy hurting. if this is a true intolerance, is there any lab test for this? and then how do you get calcuim? he does not eat meat or vegatables. eats lots of fruit and everything else. i do have a call into the dr. to see what she thinks. just thought i'd ask here to!!

What can I do next?

My daughter was hospitalized for the Rotovirus when she was 1 yr old and she could not handle dairy (milk) for roughly 6 months afterward... She did not show any allergy scratch test or Rast test allergy to milk. The virus did thin the lining of her stomach SOO much making her temporary intolarant of mostly milk.

Soy that is not fermented is not digestible--try rice milk, hemp milk or almond milk(if no nut allergies) They are all available calcium fortified. cow's milk is the perfect food for baby cows--nature did not design it for humans and it is actually not the best source of calcium--osteoporois is more common in countries where milk is heavily consumed. Cow's milk is not digestible for most people--some just havem ore reaction to it than others. High protein diet interferes with calcium absorption so if he does not like meat that is not such a bad thing--many beans are good for protein and some calcium. also try one of those books that have recipes for hiding vegeys in other food(like by Jessica Seinfield.)

This happens sometimes in babies and children after a nasty tummy bug. I would try maybe soy or some other milk alternative, but it shouldn't be a long lasting thing. Wait about a week or so and then try a little dairy again and see how he does.

I'm no expert, but it sounds like lactose intolerence to me. Maybe you can try using Lactaid brand milk so he still gets his calcium w/out the lactose

Angela A's response is correct. Goats milk has a smaller protein molecule which is more easily absorbed into the intestine/digestive system. Cow milk is for baby cows and the dairy industry in the 50s is what caused it to be more mainstream, I don't believe the rest of the world consumes as much cow milk products as we do.

A good book to read is "The Great Physician's RX for Children's Health" just released by Jordan and Nicki Rubin. They have many books on the subject of health/nutrition and right now Jordin is traveling with the Perfect Weight America crew spreading the word about nutrition, food intolerances, etc. I have changed lots of things in our household since I saw him at a seminar in October, after reading his book The Maker's Diet.

There is also a way to hide vegetables in his food. I forgot the name of the book by it's by Jessica Seinfeld. It has TONS of recipes. I tried the black bean brownies and they ROCK!

also check out www.mercola.com Dr. Mercola is one of the industry's leading experts on the subject of food allergies I believe.

My husband feels that much of his damaged permeable gut (tiny fissures in the lining of your stomach and intestines-causing mood disorders, pain in the joints, as well as other digestive major issues and allergy) was caused by his parents forcing him to eat everything they cooked in butter, forced dairy into him, cheeses, milk, etc, that he's turned up with a huge dairy allergy, not just a lactose intolerance. They are two separate problems.

Agreed with the previous poster. Cow's milk was made for cows (or other mammals in the same weight range). The lactose molecules are actually too big and indigestible by humans (which is why so many people are cow's milk intolerant).

If you really want to offer milk, you are better off buying goat's milk or sheep's milk.

If you want to try an alternative, I would suggest unsweetened Hemp Milk (which is definitely an acquired taste) or unsweetened Almond Milk. Hemp Milk naturally has higher fat content than the others. Almond Milk is good as well. Rice Milk, however, contains a lot of sugar. So, I would go easy on that one.

It isn't a good test for milk intolerance. Yogurt is lactose intolerant friendly. I know yogurt is the one thing lactose intolerant can have. Of course, yogurt is best if it has the live cultures in it since that brings the good bacteria to the the digestive track. It has the necessary enzymes in it to help break down the lactose.

The doctor has a variety of tests to test lactose intolerance. I provided a link below which will describe the variety of tests the doctor can perform and it contains an explanation of the difference between cow's milk intolerance (which is more an allergy) and lactose intolerance.

If he can't tolerate cow's milk he may also have an issue with soy. We give our daughter rice milk b/c she is allergic to dairy and also is lactose intolerant.

Try soy milk. My daughter gets stomach aches from milk also so we switched to Silk. It comes in flavors (plain, vanilla and chocolate). You can also try OJ with calcium.

I hope your little one feels better soon.
