Milk Refusal

Hi,
My son is in the process of weaning from the breast. I've been trying to give him a cup of milk (1%,2%, and whole) everyday. He doesn't take to any of them. He makes a face and throws the cup. Now, I refuse to nurse after 1 year. I feel I've been doing it long enough now. I MUST get him to drink milk. Have any of you experienced this before or have any suggestions??? Thanks in advance!

PS..My son ONLY drinks from a sippy cup, not a bottle.

What can I do next?

My daughter would not drink milk out of anything but a bottle and my husband refused to keep the bottle around after she turned 1. I didn't mind as much. When I mentioned it to the pediatrician he said it's ok as long as she gets calcium from other sources - cheese, yogurt etc... I wouldn't worry too much about it. Sometimes it's hard to go from mom to cup and takes time. It doesn't mean you're failing, it just means he loves you more. Keep trying and good luck!

Try mixing breast and whole milk together at first and slowly reducing the breast milk each day. Also, definitely use a bottle for transition. My son still likes a bottle of milk and he is 20 months. Try different temperatures. My son would only drink cold milk. We first transitioned to formula then to whole milk. Different nipples, bottles, etc. Don't give babies anything but whole milk until they are two, unless they are overweight. babies need the fat. good luck.

Hi J.,

Don't stress about your child not drinking milk. My family doesn't drink milk. Water is fine. Juices with calcium are good. With vitamin D too are great. Be sure he eats plenty of fruits and vegetables that contain calcium and vitamin D. Canned fish with skin and bones will help too.

Gooduck!

I would not give him a bottle because they recomend kids be taking all fluid by sippy cup by 14 months of age so wean straght to a cup he make like drinking from a straw better. Have you tried warming it? My youngest never drank anything cold and still prefers drinks at room temp. Try different types of sippy cups. The dr. browns is spill proof but it doesn't have the plugs so they don't have to suck hard to get liquid out. Have you tried drinking out of some of those sippy cups some are really hard.

I don't think you should stress out about this. You don't have to get him to drink milk. Tons of perfectly healthy kids don't like milk and just drink water. Try calcium fortified juice if you are worried about that, and make sure he has other sources of dairy protein. But congrats on nursing so long, and don't pick this as a battle to fight. He'll win, and you'll just get exasperated.
