Has anyone ever become pregnant while havinng the Mirena in place? I have been on the Mirena for over a year now and recently started having sore breasts and cramps. I have not had a period since it has been in and don't currently have one. I just wonder now because I have never had sore breast unless pregnant or breastfeeding.

What can I do next?

Hi There,
I have heard from others that it has happened. I have had the Mirena for a year now and have had various problems that could be explained by other factors, but recently someone aksed me if it has to do with the IUD so I have been looking into it. There are a few sites that people log in their experiences with Mirena. I typed "Mirena side effects" into google and found some great info.

I do not know if the things I am experiencing are from Mirena, but it is starting to look like a real possibility.

Good Luck-
S.

There is always a possiblitity of becoming pregnant with Mirena. I had the Mirena for almost five years and only had spotting off and on during the month. I never had any problems at all with the Mirena and I would use it again. I do have some friends that did not like it though. One friend wouldn't stop bleeding so she had it removed and the other became pregnant while she had it in. I know a few more ladies who currently have it and have had no problems with it. Have you taken a pregnancy test? I would recomend taking one at home first and then at your doctors. My friend who became pregnant with Mirena had it removed and now has a healthy three year old boy. I hope that helps.

Hi H.,

I have the Mirena in place for 4 years now. The possibility of pregnancy is yes, because the Mirena is only 99.9% effective. However, the breasts sore and cramps can be associated with your monthly cycle. I haven't had my period for 4 years now, but I still have my month cycle of sore breasts and cramps, which I didn't started getting until 1 year after the insertion of the Mirena. I would suggest buy a home pregnancy test, if it's negative, than start tracking the monthly timing of your cramps to see if it's just your cycle. Call your doctor if you have any doubts.

I got pregnant while using the para guard. Like Mirena without hormones. It's pretty rare (I was only the second in my doctors entire practice to get pregnant with an IUD) but not impossible. It turned out that I have a bicorneal uterus (heart-shaped) that made the IUD much less effective. I hadn't had any babies yet though so no one was really aware of it.
My doc was concerned about miscarriage from having to remove the IUD but my little peanut weathered that storm and is a healthy happy 10 month old baby girl now!
I would take a pregnancy test and maybe call my doc if it were me, just to be sure.
Good luck!

It is very rare to get pregnant with Mirena (same rate as having your tubes tied), but it is possible. Most likely, it is just hormonal cycling that is causing your symptoms (you still ovulate with Mirena). But, you should do a home pregnancy test. They're very accurate. If it's negative, you should be good. If positive, get in soon for an ultrasound, b/c it's possible to have a tubal pregnancy with IUD's.

I just went to the dr about this same thing and he said not to worry that in time the Mirena will drop out and will not affect the baby. I have the Mirena with hormones, but he said that the hormone dosage is so low that most women go with it and don't find out their prego until their 4th or 5th month along.

I would definitely get a prego test and a prego blood test to make sure and then if that's not it, then check if you are taking in too many sweets. This is what I was doing and I had to cut back and start exercising and eating more fruits, vege's and more protien with a lot of water.

Best of luck and if you are prego, congrats!!!!

the same thing started happening to me when i was on mirena, my breasts became very sore and a little swollen about a week before my period. i had never had PMS before, but all of a sudden i knew when my period was coming, even if i wasn't actually having a period! see, your hormones are still cycling as normal, so even though you may not be shedding your uterine lining, your body is still having the same hormone patters as if you were.
i say take a pregnancy test if you are worried. the likelihood of pregnancy with an IUD is about the same as getting pregnant after you've had your tubes tied--not likely, but flukes happen.
good luck!

I would say "no", but I think anything truly is possible. However, I would go down to the local dollar store and take a test just to see. I have had the mirena for not quite 5 years and haven't had a true cycle in 4.5 years, and still love it. I plan to have it removed and replaced with another immediately, if I can. If you still are having tenderness after a week, I'd get checked by your doc, just to be sure, or try another stick test. Be sure that you are keeping up on you annual check ups as well. Good luck!

Hi H.,
I don't know about anyone becoming pregnant while the Mirena is in - but I'd sure like to hear about it if they do!!
I had the Mirena put in at my 6week post-delivery checkup with my OBGYN. That was 9 months ago.
Over the last couple of months, I noticed that a few of my normal menstrual cycle symptoms were coming back (bloating, back pain, sore breasts, crankiness, etc). But no actual period.
Guess what just I just started? Yup. It took my body about 3 months to get it together, but my period started last week Friday. I'm on day 9 and it's a pretty heavy cycle.
From what my OBGYN told me at the original appointment, the range of normal response with the Mirena is huge - some women don't have a period at all, some have very light periods, some have normal, some have heavy ones.
If you had your Mirena put in right after your last baby was born, you may be in the same boat with me. Your body is just taking a while to rebalance. The hormones that the Mirena releases probably kept you from having a period for this long, but your body has finally adjusted and will start a period soon.
Please let me know how this turns out for you. If for some reason the Mirena starts causing complications, I'd like to know! I doubt it will, but it's better to have connections with others anyway.
Good luck, H.!
