It just doesn't seem normal NOT to have a period. I mean, we're MADE that way for goodness sakes. Where do you think all that blood goes if you don't have a period.
Sorry, I'll opt for something else!
I'm scheduled to get it tomorrow but just read previous posts about it and now kinda nervous. Can you share your experience w it? Thanks!

Mine hurt a lot to be inserted. I had cramping down my leg and wished I would have done it and then gone home instead of back to work and taken some tylenol or midol before going. It's been almost one year and my periods have just now gone away. Other than the insertion, I have not had any problems.
i wouldnt do it, again. i had mirena and ended up having surgery to get it out. it moved up high into my uterus and was stabbing me it felt like. when the dr did an ultra sound to find it she said it had moved. i had to go in like 5 times to get the strings cut because they were poking my husband. ouch! then i was dumb enough to get paragard, the other kind of iud which did me no good. i just ended up in the er in so much pain. i couldnt walk more than 30 minutes without extremely bad cramps. BAD. i dont wanna scare you but i hope it can help or at least give you a heads up.
Getting it put in wasn't to bad but having it was the WORST! the only good part was not having a period for just over 4 years. I felt bloated all the time and got heartburn...bleh...sorry I don't want to scare you
Best decision I ever made! I had one for 5 years and it was wonderful. No periods for 4.5 yrs! Then I got it removed and wanted to get pregnant... After reading stories online I thought it would take a long time, but I got my IUD out Nov 15th 2009 and found out I was PG Jan 5th! My baby is almost one and the pregnancy was perfect. Good luck!
I've had mine for about a year. Didn't hurt going in, not really any cramping afterwards either. I wonder if the pain at insertion and the complications after that some have talked about have to do with the Dr. that puts it in??? I didn't get lucky enough for it to stop my periods, though. They still come every month, and not on a regular cycle, either, which is annoying...but that's how my periods were before I ever started having kids, so I suppose for me, it's "normal." But no complaints here....no pain and no pregnancies, so at least I know it's doing it's job!
I had a good experience with it, and it was exactly what I needed at the time. I took a couple of ibuprofen before I had it inserted, it was mildly uncomfortable for a day or two, and after that... nothing. I had no ill effects from it at all.
Removal (three years later) was uneventful and painless, my cycle returned a few weeks later, and I got pregnant immediately without any problems.
Hope it goes as smoothly for you as it did for me!
Not sure if it was mirena, but my friend's iud punctured thru her uterus and had to be removed laproscopically. While this is rare, I wouldn't want the risks of wondering whether the iud was working properly and staying in place
I got mine in 10 weeks after my baby was born. My doctor waited until I was on my period again and had me take a pill 4 hours before my appointment that dilated me. The combination of being on my period and being dilated made the insertion a breeze! I was nervous about having it put in because one of the nurses in her office had one, and said it hurt going in. Also a friend of mine that had her baby 2 months before I did said when she got hers, it hurt worse than labor! When I shared this with my doctor, she came up with the plan to wait until my period started again and to dilate me. The nurse in the office said she wished she had it done that way when she got hers.
Once it was in, I did get really dizzy and cramped worse than I ever remember. I felt uncomfortable for a few days, but have been fine ever since (3 months now). And my husband loves it :)
love love love it! Feels no different than a pap smear when insterted or removed ... I've had it twice now: inserted 6wks after first child was born, removed 2 yrs later (to try for 2nd child) and was pregnant within 2 months after removal, inserted second one 6wks after second child was born and I've had this one for 3yrs now. I did not notice any ill effects - no weight gain, no heartburn, my body feels no different with the Mirena than without it. I do not have a period, I just spot a little occasionally - not even every month. I will never go back to the pill ... Good luck and don't be nervous.
My experience was not one that I wish to repeat. I had it placed after my 6th child was born (in Feb 2008) and it didn't hurt to have it placed, but what happened afterwards was not fun. I wasn't one of the lucky ones whom it made their periods go away. I had my period. It did make it lighter, but it also made it longer...by weeks. I went from having a period that lasted 7 days and was pretty heavy to having one that lasted 14+ days and was so light that I only needed a pantiliner. I called my doctor after about 3 months and she said to give it 6 to see if it got better. I gave it the six and it seemed to get better but it was also starting to get irregular. So I never knew when I was going to bleed or not. Then in Feb of 2009 I started a period but this time is was HEAVY. I called the doctor because I was starting to pass very large clots of blood. She had me come in and we checked things out and she wasn't sure what was happening. I wasn't cramping or anything so she didn't think that it was a miscarriage. But my husband and I had talked before I went in and had decided that this wasn't working for me (periods weren't what we had in mind) even though it was working for him (no need to wear condoms) so we had decided to have it removed. The doctor looked for the strings...couldn't find them. She did an ultrasound and saw the IUD there, but couldn't get a hold of it to remove it in her office. I ended up with a D&C to have it removed. I then went on to have another pregnancy, but it was much harder to get pregnant with #7 that it had been in the past (9 months of trying vs 2-3 with the other children). I had the IUD for a year, but it wasn't the miracle birth control that I had been told it would be. True, I didn't get pregnant, but the other side effects that I had were not fun. So the benefits of having it (no pill to take, sex with out worries, lighter periods) really didn't out weigh the cons of having it (longer periods, more irregular periods). You need to weigh your options and decide what it best for you.
I've had mine for 4 months now and it's wonderful. I haven't had a period since I got it inserted. I have no cramps, no bloating, nothing. My doctor told me I was going to feel pinch when it went in and then period-like cramps during the insertion. It was a piece of cake, I didn't feel a pinch and the only thing I felt was mild cramps for about 10 minutes after. The next day I felt a little dizzy, but I think it was just my body getting used to the hormones. I love it, and so does my husband.
I just took a couple ibuprofin before insertion. Didn't really hurt going in. I have not had a period in 3.5 years I've had it (plus the pregancy..).
My issue with it is that I gained a lot of weight with it and am struggling to lose that (slowly).
Otherwise I have been lucky with it...
