I absolutely hated it! The only good/easy part was insertion. The bad parts from me...

I spotted EVERY DAY for nine months.
I gained 20lbs of water weight.
My skin was horrendous!
Sex was uncomfortable, we could both feel it.
I had no sex drive anyway.
I was an emotional basket case!

I had it removed and i lost the weight, my skin cleared up within two weeks, I got my libido back, and i felt emotionally normal again. Personally, I would never ever get another one.

As others have said below, some love it, some hate it, some have had medical problems definitely from it, or possibly from it. Unfortunately, you won't know how it may affect you until and unless you get it. There are other options, though, including "Fertility Awareness Method" or "Natural Family Planning". Essentially, you learn your body's signs of fertility, and either avoid sex during those times, or use a barrier method then (condoms, etc.). I've used this during my marriage (almost 9 years now), have never taken any form of hormonal birth control, and have two children (ages 7 & 5 who were both conceived with ease, so I know I'm not infertile), so I know it works. You can learn more about it by reading the book, "Taking Charge of Your Fertility", and also do an internet search about natural fertility awareness methods.

I've had mine since March. I did not find the insertion painful at all. It was uncomfortable about the same as a gyn appointment. It took about 5 minutes. I was somewhat crampy for a couple of days, but nothing a couple of motrin couldn't take care of. I spotted off and on for a couple of weeks and haven't had a period since. I do still have the PMS symptoms once a month but nothing else. I love the convenience of it and the fact that it lasts 5 years. I would recommend it to anyone!

I will be having mine removed soon. It was somewhat painful when they inserted it, but very quick and short lived. I did not have any cramping afterward. I did have lots of spotting initially and then it got to just be light periods. I got it placed shortly after my second child so I could have the option of possibly having another. Well, a little before having it for a year I started getting frequent yeast infections. It is not stated as one of the side effects, but after researching it I found that others had also had similar issues. I went from having three yeast infections my whole life to getting one - two a month. Not worth it, my husband and I decided we did not want anymore children and he got a vasectomy. I will have my Mirena removed after having it a year and a half once his test comes back clear.

Got mine in May 2011. There was some discomfort during insertion and some cramping afterward. I took some Advil and felt ok.
I had bleeding for around 8 weeks, then spotting for another 4, but since then I've had regular periods that are getting lighter each month.
I'm really happy with it overall.

I have had great success with the Mirena, but MANY women have not.

My experience has been the same as Amy F. also.

No pain from insertion and no cramps following either. Although bleeding began shortly after.

I had mine for just over 2 years. I ultimately had it removed because it caused constant bleeding for me. No other problems with it, though.

Exact same experience as Amy F.

There have been a couple other questions on this topic, you might want to search for them if you don't get a lot of responses.

My obgyn had to try 3x with me (all in the same doctor visit). It was very quick but each time, my uterus basically said "no" and went into contractions while I was still on the table. The discomfort was minimal but I did feel some...I don't wanna lie! It finally took after the 3rd time.

The first 24 hrs I swear I could feel it and I still felt like I was going through the aftershocks of being in "labor", not really pain or anything. Bbut really, after the 1st day I completely forgot I had it! All that discomfort was worth it. I've had it for over a year and I've never had any problems of discomfort since.

And, I haven't gotten pregnant. That's the most important thing!

Insertion isn't pleasant but it's not horrible either. Make sure that if you get it you're somewhat dilated. With my first Mirena, I had my first postpartum period (it was maybe six weeks?) so I was a couple of cm dilated. That made it pretty easy. I did take a couple of Advil ahead of time.

With the second Mirena I again took Advil ahead of time, but hadn't been having periods because of the original Mirena so no dilating. It was a bit more uncomfortable that time but tolerable. I had some mild cramping that felt like very mild contractions for a couple of days but Advil took care of that.

I love the Mirena.

Some people love Mirena, and some hate it. Please research before you get it.

If you have no problem with hormonal birth control, you could be just fine. I, on the other hand, am highly sensitive to hormones and can't handle it.

The Copper T IUD is WONDERFUL. No hormones and no issues related to them. I suggest it as an alternative.

Insertion is just like Amy said. :o)
