Mirena IUD - Fairfield,CA

I had a Mirena IUD placed five weeks after my first child. I had slight spotting afterwards for a couple of days. I felt fine for many weeks. My child is now 8 1/2 months old and I have been having some discomfort on my right side of my lower abdomen with slight bloating on the same side also. I notice it most when I lay down in bed. Sometimes I can feel the discomfort in my back on the same side. Has anyone else had this? I also have slight spotting about two times a week. Is from the IUD or because I am still nursing? Could this pain and bloating be from my body going back after a baby?

What can I do next?

Get it checked regardless. My bosses daughter was in a similar situation as you and she ended up with an eptopic pregnancy that burst, symptoms started as just that.

Go to the doctor & get checked. I know a couple of mamas that have gotten pregnant with the Mirena IUD. Since your having discomfort on the right side it could be an ectopic pregnancy..

In answer to your question--I had mine in for 2.5 years. I was nursing the entire time. At least once a month I had stabbing pains that prevented me from moving or trying to stand up. I had the strings trimmed, but it never stopped the discomfort.

After about a year I started having other symptoms that included the return of acid reflux that I only had during pregnancy. Three times in 18 months I went in for a CBC because my blood sugar would spike or drop so quickly that I'd black out momentarily at least twice a day--my doctor was concerned that I had diabetes. For four months I experienced arthritic symptoms for no reason. Once my baby night-weaned, I still couldn't sleep at night, I woke up every two hours and couldn't fall back to sleep. The worst was that I couldn't lose the baby-weight no matter how I tried! I spotted after sex--every single time.

About 8 weeks ago I got it taken out. I am now a completely clear headed, I have no more discomfort. My sex drive is comin back (I was so tired, so I didn't notice it was gone!). I had unbelievable bleeding for 9 days--but once it stopped I finally budged from the weight I had been since I had it in--yes, I was the exact same weight at removal 2.5 years later as I was at insertion!

I hope for your sake that you're one of the people for whom Mirena works--but the bloating and misery seem to be saying you're not.

Good luck with it!

P.S. If it feels wrong to you, don't let your doctor talk you out of having it removed.

It could very well be from your IUD, as I had intermittent spotting for the 1st several months after I got my IUD. But rather than worry, why not just ask your ob/gyn? S/he can check the placement of your IUD and make sure that it's where it's supposed to be. Also I seem to recall that the Mirena contains hormones and, accordingly, your iud could be throwing your cycle off and "tricking" your body into thinking it's your time of the month--I don't have the Mirena, but rather the one without the hormones because I didn't want the extra hormones. Either way, talk to/see your ob/gyn soon!

Updated

forgot to mention--if your ob/gyn and you decide to remove your Mirena iud, you can still possibly benefit from a regular (copper-type with no hormones) iud. I've had mine for almost 6 years with nothing but very occasional light spotting. It's supposed to be safe for about 7 years (as opposed to Mirena's 5). Good luck either way!

i also had a friend who had an ectopic pregnancy while on Mirena. I would try to get in with the doctor, maybe take a pregnancy test in the meantime to see if that's a possibility.

I had the Mirena IUD placed in 8 weeks after my baby. I, too, had slight spotting for months. I, too, had a pain in my side after about a year w/it in. I pushed for an ultrasound. It is an enlarged cyst. Same symptoms. Go to doctor and ask for an ultrasound.
