Mirena Iud-future Pregnancies

I am a first time breastfeeding mom, and am leaning towards getting the Mirena. I know how everything works and am aware of possible side effects. My main concern is whether or not it will effect me getting pregnant again. I have a 6 week old but would like to have another in about two years...I guess I am wondering if it prevented anyone getting pregnant again, and if not how long did it take to become pregnant. thanks, this will help a lot in my decision.

What can I do next?

Hi M., I had the Mirena IUD between my 2nd and 3rd for 3 years and i had it taken out in March of 2005 and I was pregnant by June of 2005. I have to say that I loved it and I am planning to get it "installed" again after I have this baby I'm prego with (I didn't have it between baby 3 and this one and hence....) It's a great IUD with little or no side effects as far as I could tell. Good luck!

I have 4 children and have used Mirena between #3 & 4 and have it again. I don't have my period at all (which I love!). I was pregnant within 3 months of having the Mirena removed before my last child. It will not affect you getting pregnant once it is removed. Go for it.

I had the Mirena for a few years before I took it out to have baby #2 and it does work great and is very convenient. However, that being said, if you have any sensitivities to hormone levels, you'll want to watch out when it's taken out. Since part of the Mirena's effectiveness comes from the progestrone (I think that's it... it's been awhile and I don't remember exactly), which is slowly released into the body, you may experience some mood swings like I did. It wasn't horrible, but I certainly didn't feel like myself for about 2 months and was moody and irritable (which, coincidentally, will not increase your chances of getting pregnant if your partner wants nothing to do with you...)

When I decide on birth control again, I will go with an IUD, but next time I'll use the copper. Good luck!

I love, love, love my Mirena IUD. My periods come once every 2-3 months and it's usually only a day of spotting. As far as I understand, it has no effect on fertility. The studies show you are just as fertile as if you've not been on any birth control. I'm 99.9% sure I'm done having kids, but didn't want to do anything permanent (and neither did my husband) and now I plan on just getting a new one when I need to take the one I have out. I highly recommend it.

I had the Mirena IUD for 4 years, I was ready to have another baby and had it removed and got pregnant the second month after removal. I had my baby and had the Mirena put back in. I love it.

I also have the mirena and my sister-in-law (who has one too) said that once you take it out you don't have to wait to start trying for the baby. (she is also an OB nurse). My doctor also told me the same thing. I chose it because of the fact that it was a no brainer form of birth control, I don't have to remember anything and you don't have to put anything on (or in) before having intercourse. And another thing is that it won't affect your milk supply. I have a 4 month old that I am currently nursing and am loving it so far (have had it about 3 weeks now). Good luck with your decision.

I have not had the Mirena IUD but I did have the copper one. It didn't seem to work for me since it was implanted in my uteran wall, and I got pregnant. This doesn't happen often I was told but it is something to be aware of. Just be sure to ask your Dr about it.

I have Mirena and it's wonderful. my doctor says once removed, the chances of conception are the same as if you used nothing. You just have to wait for your next period to start trying, just like any other birth control. The only thing bad is I bled for several weeks ( commmon side effect) and spot occassionally (also common) usually after intercourse. Luckily, I should expect it to stop by 6 months and will have light or non-existant periods after that! My husband and I love it! If you can get past the bleeding, it's worth it! We chose it because of the conception figures because we miscarried a child before conceiving our son and even though the doctors say no, we feel that bith control pills played into it somehow. Good luck!
