Mirena IUD Weight Gain

Has anyone used the Mirena IUD? Someone recently mentioned she had a great deal of weight gain with an IUD. Merina is different than most as it delivers progesterone and not estrogen. I have had a history of thrombosis (stroke) and unable to take birth control or use an IUD (except for Mirena).

What can I do next?

Hi L., I've been on Mirena for a year now. I haven't had any weight gain, but I can't seem to lose weight. I started it two months after giving birh and I just can't seem to get rid of the weight.

I have had a Mirena IUD for 8+ years (I'm on my second device), but I'm only 30. I had a 1-year IUD before that to see what it was like. I have not experienced weight gain or moodiness or an excessive amount of hunger and in fact, find that I'm happier and less moody because my periods no longer exist or interfere with my life.

There are a number of factors that play into wieght gain - age, metabolism, and personal habits and behaviors. Having an IUD, for me at least, ensures that I will NOT have to deal with middle-aged post-pregnancy weight gain that I see many women never lose. I had my children young and was able to get the weight off, I'm sure much more easily than I could now or in the future.

I'll take a few pounds creeping up on me over a decade any day over that.

The only symptoms that Mirena causes is psychosomatic ones. The hormones are not released in your blood stream. It works great. I have seen alot of "side effects" blamed on the mirena that could be explained by a host of other things. I love mine and it gives us peace of mind until we decide to do a permanent sterilization. Good luck. Talk to your doc about any concerns you have.

I did. I got one last year and gained a pound a week for 10wks, at which point I had it immediately taken out...and have been working at losing those 10lbs for the last year. My dr said it's a rare side effect, but it is possible. Good luck to you!

I have had the Mirena IUD for 5 years, time to have it replaced, and I have not had weight gain from Mirena. It took about 6 months for my body to regulate, and then I didn't have periods anymore. I have had the same box of panty liners for 4 years! Since my periods are so bad, Mirena gave me my life back. Hope this helps.

i have had the Mirena for about 1 year now and have alot 20 pounds almost of weight gain I know that they say that it should not cause weight gain but it does. If you goggle weight gain with the Mirena you will amazed at the response on what you find. I asked my family doc and she told me that it tricks your body into thinking that you are pregnant and you react in such as hungry all the time moody, she told me that if I like the fact that no pills and such that I should get the copper IUD which lasts for 10 years! Hope it help good luck

I've had mine in since Oct. 2005 and love it. No weight gain that I noticed but it's not like I weigh myself all the time. I also love that I don't get a period, how do you not love that?

After having my daughter in August of 2006, I have had nothing but problems with the pill. Lots of cramps and spotting all month long. I wanted to try something different and my doctor talked with me about the Mirena IUD. I was a little nervous, but figured I was having so many problems it couldn't hurt to try it. I absolutley love it! I have had the IUD for about 3 months so far and it is the best thing ever - I wish I would have done it sooner. There are some side effects; cramps from the insertion, spotting the first few months, and the cost. I was one of the lucky ones though. I had no cramps or pain from the insertion, and no spotting. My insurance even covered the entire cost, aside from my $10.00 office visit co-pay. I did not realize that weight gain was a side effect (Not sure if I just didn't pay attention to that one or if it was not brought up by my doctor or in the paperwork I read about it). Either way, it has not been a problem for me. I have seen no signs of weight gain.
If your insurance will cover the cost, I would absolutely reccomend the IUD. Even if I did have some cramping and spotting, I still think it is worth it. No daily pill to remember or monthly visitis to the pharmacy.
Good luck!

I have the Mirena and I love it, Ive had it for about 1 year now and I have actually lost 30 lbs, (with diet and exerciise of course) but I have tried other birth control and have gained weight but I haven't had any problems with this, when I first got it but in I did get a infection but a little antibiotics and Im good now, I recommend to anyone, the only thing is make sure your insurance covers it because it is I think $600 or something like that.

All birth control does impact your body in some manner. When chemicals are passing into your bloodstream, these hormones affect other things.

As someone that has seen a few people suffer at the use of birth control... I highly suggest that you make sure you research all the information to be found.

Currently both of these people cannot use any birth control due to the fact that the extra hormone and chemicals did damage to the colon. (of all things.).

Please, just be careful in your decisions as this is not something that many doctors go over as my good friend was never informed. Good luck!
