My daughter goes for her MMR vaccination next week. After doing lots of research, I am still so nervous about her getting the vaccine because of the supposed link to autism. Just looking for some advice on how to alleviate my nervousness.

Hi D. K.!
This is a hot topic and it was very, very interesting to read the responses you received! Most people do NOT do their OWN personal research on this topic instead relying on "hear-say" from physicians, groups, websites, etc. I did MY OWN personal research on this topic, getting books, asking for the package inserts for the vaccines from my doctor, and looking at research at the medical library.

Get the package insert from your pediatrician before you vaccinate and READ them! If you are not medically savvy, as I was not back then, find someone you trust who can help you make sense of the ingredients. I read them to my girlfriend who is a Registered Pharmacist, and it was a memorable moment for me. She was horrified at the ingredients that I read to her, and I didn't know why. There is a book called "The Virus and The Vaccine" by D. Bookchin and Jim Schumacher that reveals that BOTH polio vaccines in fact cause cancer in children. Get if from the Library and read it yourself.

Another book you can probably get from the library is called "Evidence of Harm" - whose author escapes me at this moment. Do some research and make an educated decision. One website that I have found to be valuable is called NVIC which stands for the National Vaccine Information Center founded, interestingly by two mothers whose children were vaccine injured over 20 years ago (one of them died).

This is not a matter to be taken lightly. My blessings to you as you find your way on this topic. You can e-mail me privately for support at: ____@____.com
Love,
L.

D., this is something I am dealing with right now as well. I chose to delay the vaccination and now my kids are 5 and 2.5 and I'm beginning to feel that it's time to get it done. I do know lots of kids who have had no problem getting the vaccine but you always hear those other stories. My kids have a few more vax to catch up on before we do MMR but when the time comes within the next year to do it, I will probably do it as three separate shots done 30 days apart. You need to get a prescription from the pediatrician and have a compound pharmacy get the separate vaccines if you decide to do it this way. Good luck with your decision.

There is no link. The MMR does not cause autism. A recent and comprehensive study supports this.

Doctors now believe that Autism may be caused by a rare gene.

What is frigthening is out West there have been measle outbreaks spread by unvaccinated people. People need to be more afraid of the disease and not the vaccine.

I know this a hot topic for some, but ever since my baby boy was hospitalized for suspected Pertussis aka whooping cough (the P in DTaP vaccine) I have become passionate about immunizations. He was only 2 months old and for 2 weeks all he would do was cough and vomit. He couldn't eat or sleep. He was being treated for Pertussis but he still suffered. He lay listless in my arms and during each of his coughing fits I had to insert a syringe into his mouth/throat to suction out all the phlegm.

It got to the point where I broke down because he was not getting better. Our doctors sent us to the emergency room and from there we were sent to another hospital for ICU.

I was breast feeding at the time and since he was hooked up to machines I couldn't even nurse him. He hated bottles and the nurses had to force him to eat from one. Of course it all came back up. I will never forget the mucus filled vial that was connected to his gastro-nasal tube. The amount of thick greenish/yellow mucus that came out of him was horrifying.

Thank God after 3 days, his oxygen levels were up, he was keeping his breastmilk down, and his rapid brathing steadied and he was moved out of ICU.

My husband, daughter and oldest son were not aloud to visit because they were all being quarrantined - they all had symptoms, I did not. I never got sick. I was vaccinated as a child. I had booster shots. My husband was only vaccinated when he applied for his visa, 8 years ago (to the best of his knowledge), my other kids did not have all the coverage from the vaccines yet, they were very young as well.

I know the DTaP vaccine is not the one creating all the autism controversy, but my point is that if children are not vaccinated, they pose a risk to others. Some vaccines do not give 100% protection so when an unvaccinated child spreads a life threathening disease to a partially protected one, that person can #1 either become sick with some protection or #2 take the disease home to an infant who is the most vulnerable.

I believe the second scenario is what happened in my case. My daughter was attending preschool in an area where there were some pertussis cases, unbeknownst to me. She was the first one in the family to get sick. She recovered, but her baby brother almost didn't.

Thank God I am in the process of planning his 2nd birthday which is next week. He is the coolest little guy ever and I am forever grateful that he is old enough and strong enough to have all his vaccines and be able to defend himself better.

We so far, have decided to delay until I learn more about it. I am learning about the benefits to waiting until they are older and/or breaking the shots up into 3 separate shots. You have every right to decline the vaccine at this time and don't let them bully you into it! Its your call, so know your rights! I recommend Dr. Sears The Vaccine Book. I just got it and began reading. Its very unbiased and very informative.

You have every right to be nervous! Its a tough call to make. If you DO vaccinate and your child has a reaction or ill effect, you'll never forgive yourself. If you DO NOT vaccinate and your child contracts an illness, you will never forgive yourself.
Both of my kids are vaccinated. And other than my son's asthma, and food allergies, both my kids are healthy. They did not have any negative effects from the vaccines.
With that said, if I had it to do all over again, I'm not sure I would have made the same choice. I'm quite certain I would not vaccinate. Or at the very least delay the vaccines.
There are more kids with autism, than kids with small pox.
And then when you think about the increasing amounts of kids with allergies, asthma and learning disabilities. It just makes a person wonder...
Thats just my personal opinion. I'm also curious to see what others think about this topic.
Good Luck in making your decision.

We have our own fears about the vaccine (our son is 13 months). We presented our fears to our doctor and were completely blown off and told that our concerns were not warranted. So....we found a new doctor. She is absolutely amazing - she believes in giving that particular vaccine no earlier than 18 months and also has the 3 separate vaccines. While no one knows for sure what the cause is, I think it is fundamentally important to find a doctor that values your concerns and doesn't blow you off.

I'm sorry I don't know what to say for sure, but I don't blame you for being nervous about having her get them. I'm curious what everyone else will say. I would suggest not getting them for her...you know you can get around them, even though the medicle people say they're required. there are religious and another kind of excuse to get out of them. plus you can selective vax or delay vax'ing as well.

It hasn't been proven yet. And most cases that had happened were due to an office mistake of a child getting more than the appropriate dosage for his age. It's because of the mercury in the vaccine that they use as a preservative. It is safer for her to get the vaccine than to not. You don't ever want to take the chance of your daughter catching one of these diseases which in themselves can be deadly.

My son didn't get his MMR until he was 2 instead of at 18 mos. My kids didn't get their shots at the recommended time table to begin with. They didn't start getting shots until they were 4 mos instead of hours old. If you don't feel comfortable hold off. It won't hurt. Don't let the doc's office pressure you into it either. A few months won't make a difference. If you don't inital the paper they can't force you to get it. Just say "Ya know little Jeffy has been coughing and had a runny nose. I'd like to wait to give that shot until he's feeling better." When they say it would be fine anyway, just say you'd like to wait.

D.,
You are right to be concerned. Do your research, and be sure you are 100% comfortable before you vaccinate. The CDC denies any link between vaccines and Spectrum Disorders (Autisim), however lacks the ability to explain why most of these children have toxic levels of mercury in their systems.
If you choose to vaccinate, first be sure to ask that it be Thermasil (?sp) free. Second get the batch # and check it on the CDC web-site for reactions, and to be sure the Dr. is correct about it being free of Thermasil. I would also only allow one shot at a time. Multiple shots are draining to these precious little bodies.
Do not just trust your pediatrician. My daughter had a severe life threatening reaction to the MMR. I was told by our then pediatrician b/c it happened within hours of the shot that it was not a reaction. This was WRONG!!! I contacted a specialist and she did indeed have a reaction. I refused the next "boosters" and had her titer tested and AMAZINGLY after just one dose she was 100% immune.
I have refused many vaccines, and have looked into homeopathic vaccinations.
The best possible thing to do is EDUCATE yourself. Just because it is "time" for the vaccine does not mean it has to happen now. Be a consumer, protect your child!!!
Good Luck!

Trust your instinct. Don't parent based on your fears. I have refused all vaccinations for my almost 3 year old and 8 month old based on the logic that they are at very low risk for contacting anything since they are at home with me. My 2 1/2 year old got whooping cough and we treated him at home homeopathically. Within 2 weeks he was fine with no lingering cough, and the baby never got it most likely due to his breastfeeding and the immunity that offered him. The experience validated my decision so much. However, the important thing is to keep your children's immune systems strong by giving them lots of nutrient dense foods and no sugar/white flour.. then they will have the vitality to get through things. Also, rubella is (or, was- things may have changed in a few years) cultured on fetal lung tissue so if you have any religious convictions about aborted baby tissues being used for your child to get a vaccine, that can really affect your decision.
