my daughter is starting preschool in a few days and the school said if i got a note from my Dr saying she thought it was ok to put off the MMR shot till a yr that the school would accept that. Well my dr said forget about it and wont write the note.
Does anyone know a dr who would write a note.. guess a more holistic dr. I am going to switch Drs now, so I just need a name of someone who might do that.
Thanks so much!
R

You do know there have been measles outbreaks all across the US, right? Why would you wait for the shot? Can you get her to get the shot before school starts? My kids' pediatrician doesn't require appointments for shots. You just walk in, get the shot and you're done.

She is starting pre-school and hasn't had that shot a long time ago? I thought they had that one as babies. I think I would keep her out until she got it. Those illnesses are serious and could even be deadly. I would not want to risk her getting exposed.

I think if you really don't plan on her getting her vaccines then by all means change docs.

115 cases have been reported int he US this YEAR. 90% were NOT vaccinated.

I know it is your choice, but if you are too young to remember what measles were like, you may not realize how horrible they can be.

I'm with your doctor-I wouldn't write the note, either. I am not judging you, but if there is a chance to prevent your daughter from getting a preventable disease, why wouldn't you do it?

Once again, not judging, because I opted to put off my son's MMR shot for a few months. However, I look back and think how foolish I was to even consider doing that. Both my children are fully vaccinated.

If you want an exception, find a different doctor.
However, I can't blame your doctor for not writing you a note.
You have a choice to vaccinate or not. Your doctor isn't going to put it in writing that it's okay for you not to.
Not with preventable diseases making a comeback the way they are.

My aunt lived a life of suffering after being crippled by polio as a child before the vaccine was invented.
A poke in the leg to prevent that happening to my children?
There was never a moment's question.
My kids received all of their vaccines on schedule.
As did I and my sister when we were children along with all the other kids in my extended and huge family.

When you see first hand how a person's body can be ravaged by something, it makes the decision easier.
That's just MY opinion.

I wouldn't send my child to school these days without being fully vaccinated. Measles is on the upswing and it's very contagious. Your doctor obviously doesn't want to be held liable if your child were to get measles. I would hold off on preschool if you aren't going to vaccinate for a year. Seriously.

You ought to know that there's a strong movement with many doctors now to refuse to accept patients in their practice that refuse to vaccinate and/or refuse to vaccinate within the AAP's adjusted schedule. It's for the safety of the rest of the patients in the practice, especially those who are immuno-compromised and haven't received the vaccines yet because they're not old enough or because they can't due to an allergy (such as an egg allergy or other known sensitivity).

As others have suggested, you should be certain that your area isn't having an outbreak of measles, mumps, or rubella. They're all very serious diseases and there are outbreaks that are severely injuring unvaccinated children all over the country including babies that aren't old enough for the MMR yet. Herd immunity is decreasing because of this small yet persistent movement to not vaccinate and not vaccinate on schedule.

EDIT: I just want to add really quickly that I can back this up with fact. This is something I've researched personally and known about for years, but it was actually a segment on The Today Show this past week so you can go on their web site and look up that segment.

The MMR-Austism link has pretty much been disproven. I also waited until my child was older to give the MMR shot. She was over 2 when she got it. She was/is just fine. No problems. If you don't want to get the shot, I say wait to enroll your child in preschool. If you have a healthy child, there is no reason not to get the MMR shot. As long as you get ONLY that shot and no others that day, and your child is healthy then there is no reason that you should have any problems. Major diseases are making a comeback because mothers are afraid to vaccinate.

You can get a vaccine exemption. Don't be bullied. You do what is best for your family. You can still get the disease if you're fully vaccinated people.

Wow...glad you're switching! I don't live in your area, but I'm on your side with putting it off. I'm sure you have your reasons, don't listen to others who haven't researched what you have. You know what's best for your family!

I could be wrong, but I think you can do a blood draw to see if she already has immunity. You could also get a legal exemption.

Edit: The link between autism and MMR has not been disproven. There was a campaign to smear the doctor who was studying it. It drives me crazy when smear campaigns start and then when it is proven as such the detraction never reaches as far as the misinformation did.

I have been on a delayed vaccine schedule with my son that I am happy with. We did the MMR at 15 months and he had no problems with it whatsoever. However, he is not in preschool. If you cant get the note, i would just wait for preschool until he gets it in a year.

I don't see why not only we can be TOLD what vaccines to give our kids, they can also tell us WHEN. I do believe in alot of vaccines, but I don't believe in loading kids down w/ 3 multiple vaccines that contain up to 5 in one shot!
I think yo are being bullied. JMO

Each state has different laws. I have not vaccinated since my son was 18 months old. He is 3 1/2. "Fortunately" he has had all his immunizations except MMR and his yearly flu. He has been to 3 preschools so far (one was a camp preschool) and all have accepted my letter that I have a religious opposition to immunizations. You should not feel pressured to do it because of school.

I don't know the laws for your state but try googling vaccine exemption requirements. Where I live you do not have to have a doctor's note. Just a form signed (by you) and notarized saying you are choosing not to vaccinate. According to my state's laws if there is an epidemic, you either have to vaccinate or take your child out of school. I know you are only delaying, but perhaps an exemption like this could buy you time with the school? Good luck.

What preschool? I only ask as my son goes to St. Paul's in Riverside and last year they were down to reconfirming that all the kids got flu shots since outbreaks were so bad. No vaccine, no school. MMR may not be the only issue you will deal with regarding vaccination schedules.

You'll have to find a doctor who'll sign an exemption. Find a holistic doctor, homeopath or natural path and take them for a check up. They should sign the exemption no problem.
