MMR Vaccine - Fort Lauderdale,FL

Hi all! I chose not to give my baby the MMR just yet, due to the information out there saying that it can be related to the cause of autism, etc. I know there is no real diagnosed correlation but it seems that the opposite may be true. Anyway, this has actually been on my mind for a while now and after watching Oprah today (autism based), I figured I'd ask. When I asked my pediatrician if she gave the vaccines separately for the MMR, she said no as it was too costly. She did say that we could wait until she turned 2. Since I have months to go before she turns 2, I didn't even bother asking her : why 2 and whats the outcome? So I'm wondering if any of you had experienced this...waited until the child was 2 and what happened afterwards?

I asked my ped. and he gave me the standard answer but i am really intrested in finding a ped who is willing to discuss shots and say "well this one you REALLY Need to get and this one you can hold off on for now" if there is such a doctor. If anyone knows of a Dr. like this around delray area i would love his/her number. Thanks

Hi W.....I understand your concerns, however, before you make a final decision make sure that your decision is an informed one; not one based on conjecture or a popular TV show host's presentation.

I'm only guessing, but I think that the reason your pediatrician said you could wait until your daughter was 2 years old might be that she is likely to have limited exposure to other children and the community-at-large before age two. The REAL risk in NOT vaccinating your daughter is her vulnerability to others carrying the measles, mumps or rubella viruses. Should your daughter become infected with one of these diseases you could be dealing with a serious illness and possibly, death.

The risk is low as long as your daughter is in the United States because most children in the US are vaccinated for MMR and therefore immune. Your daughter’s risk of exposure becomes greater if you travel outside of the US or come in contact with someone carrying the disease who travels into the US.

Here is a start on accessing accurate information. A website you can go to for more information on vaccines. http://www.vaccinecontroversy.com/ as well as the US Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) Vaccine and Immunizations website http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/

Mr. Arthur Allen has written a comprehensive account of vaccines in his recently published (2007) book: Vaccine: The Controversial Story of Medicine's Greatest Lifesaver .

Best wishes to you and your daughter in whatever you decide.

I agree with the first post. You have to reserch and decide what is best for you. I am a mom of an Autistic child. He was fine up until the MMR. I have the pictures just like Jenny on Operah. I do not want to say it caused his Autism but I feel that it contributed to. We have done metels testing and there is also a ton of Arsnic in my sons system which can mimic signs of Autism. My children will not be receving any more shots though. There is a Ped in Boca somewhere who will give children the MMR seperatly. IT is a woman but I do not remeber her name. I looked at my childrens shot records and found that they received 19 shots by 18 months. That is to many for such young immune systems. The last time I check kids receive something like 25 shots by 18 months. I feel if the shorts where spead out over a longer peroid of time it would give the immune system time to recover between each shot.
Do your research and see what is best for you. Not giving any more shots to my kids has been the best decision for me. You can also get a Tetiers test to see what your child is already immune to. I know of a parent who breast feed and never gave her son the MMR but according to the Teiters test he was immune.

Hi W.,

I am not an expert, but I believe they wait until after 2 because they don't recognize autistic behavior until age two or so. Which, coincidentally, the MMR is given around that time. Thus, the controversy begins.

According to my Pedetrician, the MMR has not been linked to Autism. Although, that does not mean it isn't. I asked her what she did with her children and she said she gave them the vaccine. That means a lot to me. She also told me that the ingredient that is supposed to be the aledged cause of autism (mercury or Thimerosal) is no longer in the vaccine. (you need to make sure your dr. does not have old stock)

One other thing, my doctor gave me the choice of giving it separately if I wanted to, which I did. If your doctor won't, and you want it separate, go to another doctor. My doctor is awesome, but she is in Miami Beach (don't know where you are). She never told me it was too costly. I just think your doctor did not have it separate and did not want to order it.

I know my sister-n-law waited until her 2nd son was over 2 before she gave it to him, because her first son had some issues and she was so scared it was the vaccine. But it ended up being speech problems, not autism.

Also, again I am not an expert, from what I understand, Autism is predominantly in males. Yes, there are some females, but mostly males. I believe it is 4-1 ratio (males - females)

Anyway, if you want it given separate, then find a doctor who will do it. You have options and it is your child.

Hope this helps.
If you want my doctors number e-mail me and I'll send it to you.

My son is 8 months old and has only had the HaPT vaccine, and it was without the thymerisol. We know too many people with autism, and although they say there is no link with vaccines, we didn't want to take that chance. Like the other people said, do your own research though so you feel comfortable with whatever decision you make.

Hi W.! I feel the same way as you about vaccinations. I watched Oprah yesterday as well, but I already felt that way. Anyhow, I did get my son's 12 month vaccines which included mmr. I did have that feeling at the time that it wasn't right. He has been fine though, but it has only been a month since the shot. My husband and I have decided not to vaccinate from now on though. We are going to wait until there is more information or until the laws in Florida change. I am in the process of looking for doctors who support the decision. Do your research and go with your gut. Good luck!

I am mother of 5 children ages 7-24. I vaccinated my first 2 and stopped midway with my 3rd son. My last two have not had any immunizations. My advice to you is research the topic until you are comfortable with your decision- whichever way you decide. The worse thing is to be uncomfortable or unsure of your decision. Waiting until children are older than two gives a chance for their immune systems to mature so that they can better handle the vaccine. I have a wonderful doctor in Orlando who is a pediatric MD who has been trained in homeopathy and other alternative modalities. She helped me to be comfortable with my decision and to understand what I would be dealing with if my children got any of the diseases they were not vaccinated against. Once I was at peace with my decision, I stopped worrying about the what ifs. Dr. C. Franz at the Franz Center is my doctor FYI. Hope this is helpful.

W., you do well to question whether you should be administering injections with foreign elements into the undeveloped brain and organs of a baby.
Do NOT believe everything you read or that you are told. Dig deeper and deeper. Question things and follow the money!!!
As far as vaccines not containing thimerisol, consider the fact that vaccine manufacturers are not required to report amounts of mercury lesser than a certain amount, and in fact they can say that there is no mercury when in fact there is a small amount. The point is, NO amount of mercury is ever safe!!! But they don't tell you that, you need to find out for yourself.
There is no law that says you MUST vaccinate your children. By this I"m not suggesting that you should not, I'm exhorting you to make a truly informed decision and to be aware of your true rights as a parent. It is commonly believed that it is illegal to keep your children from vaccines or to decide WHEN (timing is very important) to give it to them. It is not. I repeat = it is not illegal. Each state however has different laws regarding these things, but most allow room for excemptions for those who fit the criteria.
BTW, it will be very difficult to find regular MD's who will support your decisions, so if you limit yourself to that route it could become very discouraging. However there are many naturopathic docs who not only will assist you, but help to educate you on what all of your options are.
Meanwhile, try to find ways to optimize your child's immune system as well as what things work against it. This is the best you can do for your children. Stay informed and blessings to you.

Hello W. C,
I am a mother of a child who was affected by the preservative, Thirmerosal, which was in the MMR vaccine given to our son. We have actual medical proof that in our son's case, the vaccine did cause our son to have autism. This is a complex disorder and warrants serious consideration from all new parents. I encourage you and compliment you for inquiring first. Begin researching credible sources that are unbiased and completely independent. The truth is out there you just have to understand what is at stake if the truth comes out and how it would effect those who would be implemented. It will take some time so be patient there are no quick answers to your dilemma.

A little about me:
I am a Parent Advocate for Special Needs Children who specializes in children affected by Autism. I am a collaborative partner with the Dept. of Education at both the state and local level to provide inclusion for our children with special needs. So with that said, if you want me to help you navigate the vast sea of information out there so that you can make sound decisions about whether or not you should vaccinate your daughter then please write to me and I will respond when I have a moment free in my schedule. yes they can separate them. if you decide to give the shots DEMAND they give them separately. it is your right. offer to pay the difference. i think it was about 100 dollars more.
but nonetheless research the topic. you can wait for these shots. you can switch the pediatrician if you have to. it's not about the money. it's about kids' well-being

Educate before you vaccinate! Your children... Your choice...your Rights.... I read that once on a business card.

To all moms with concerns, google "vaccine info" and you will find numerous site full of info both good and bad. Even look into National Vaccine info. There is so much going on I could write for days. Look into Wholistic Moms Groups for more info also. Good luck to all and feel free to e-mail for more.

Hi W.,
I also chose not to give my daughter the vaccines all together. What I did was I gave her one each month. According to the Pediatrician he said that to avoid any risks I would have to wait a month. He was very understanding and respected my opinion without hesitating. Her medicaid did not cover them separatly (go figure) but I only had to pay like $25 for each one. Even if it was $100 I would still do it. I personaly believe that this is somewhat connected to autism and even if I didn't I don't think it's worth the risk. I don't know if there is a difference in giving all of them at once when she's 2. Never heard of that but double check. This is a lifechanging decision. Make a wise one.
Be safe and God Bless.
