My grandson is now 4 and still sucks his tongue which he holds poked out of his mouth. He's been in speech therapy for a year. There are a couple of conditions for which tongue sucking and poor speech are indicators. You can have him evaluated by the school district and if he's in need of services to enable him to be a success in school they will provide those services without cost.

Now, my mother and my youngest brother, who is now 50, have chewed on their tongue since I can remember. Their speech has been OK. They say it's comforting.

I don't know if this helps but it's 2 different views on tongue sucking.

Hi G.. I am a speech-language pathologist (aka... speech therapist) and have practiced in the schools for the past 6 years. You may want to have him evaluated by your local school district (contacts are usually available online). Or, you can do a google search for private SLPs in your area. Early intervention is always your best bet! Good luck!

My husband and brother both suck on their tongue when their throat tickles. It could be that he has allergies and it gives him a tickle in his throat.

I was so happy when I found this!!! I have been looking for my 5 year old grandson who sucks his tungue. He has problems with his speech and he gets tired of everyone asking him to repeat things. He is really smart he just sucks his tungue. I am hoping to find some tool that will help him.

i am having the SAME exact problem! My son is 2 1/2 and has extreme speech delay and sucks on his tongue constantly (as if in the motion that he was nursing or sucking on a pacifier). Its so bad that there are teeth indents in his tongue. I'm reading the other responses below and am curious what conditions might be associated with this and also if you found any way to curb this habit?? i am so frustrated. Not only is it connected with his speech delay but it has moved and ruined the aesthetics of his teeth :(

Hi G., my daughter is 3 1/2 years old and has also always sucked on her tongue. She tends to do it more when she has a runny nose or a cough. We think hers might also be do to alleriges. She also tends to do it when she is really tired. My daughter was in speech therapy for 1 1/2 years and she was also in special ed preschool. She is no longer in these services as she talks very well now and she still sucks her tongue. I would suggest that you have him evaluated by a speech therapist and see what they say to do. Remember that early intervention is the best. My daughter and son are proof of that.
Good luck.
