Monkey Theme

I'm planning a monkey themed 1st birthday party for my son. I'm not crazy about the Curious George stuff and managed to find some party favors/decorations that were just simple monkeys. I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas for games/activities for the older children (ages 3 - 5) that are theme related? So far, I picked up a "pin the banana on the monkey" game and am considering a banana split bar. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Last fall, Target had dozens of "monkey items" in their dollar bins just inside the store (at least the Waterfront did). They might have some left. There were things you could decorate a kids room with like little mirrors and lights on strings. Also other gifty things like a ceramic monkey and some plastic ones. I bought lots of them for my daughter's dorm room at college - 18 and still a monkey freak!

How about a banana relay. You can have the kids try to pass the bananas from under their chins to the next person in the relay race.

Or how about "Hot Banana" instead of "Hot Potato". You could use an actual banana.

You could serve banana splits.

Have fun!

We did a monkey theme for our son's 3rd b-day a few years ago. I made a banana flavored cake with yellow cream cheese icing in the shape of a peeled banana. We also did "pin the banana" on the monkey game. I also made binoculars with toilet paper rolls and the kids went on a scavenger hunt for stuffed animals in the jungle. Games are pretty difficult to do for the little guys, though, so don't get your hopes up too much :)

Well, I think it depends on how elaborate you want to get. I know one local mother was able to find someone who actually brought monkeys to the party - that was a huge hit.

Any nearby trees or beams in the basement that could hold a rope swing? Monkey Pinata?

How about a simple game like Simon Says but you could call it Monkey See, Monkey Do. And what about that board game, Barrel of Monkeys?

That's all I can think of. Good luck!!

How about tie die white t-shirts?
How to Tie-Dye - Introduction
Try your hand at the art of tie-dye. You can create your own colorful tie-dyed t-shirts or other articles of clothing. You can also make matching sheets, pillowcases, and curtains if you like. It's easy if you follow these simple tie-dye directions.
Basically, you gather, fold, and tie your t-shirt (or other item) with rubber bands or string and soak it in fabric dye. Of course, there are a few more steps but these will vary depending on what kind of dye you use.

"monkey see..monkey do".....make up a game where they copy a funny move that you make, like jumping up and down , have a "monkey race" to get the bananas, download monkey sounds and they dance like monkeys while the music plays and then FREEZE when the music stops. change the name of the normal kids games to a "monkey" version. good luck and have lots of fun.

You could have a ring toss kind of thing. Get the monkey's on the tree. Or even make a big monkey face with an open mouth and try to toss bananas into it. Or maybe a relay race where they can only move like monkeys. I hope these help. :0)

Hi

We just celebrated my son's 4th bday and the theme was Curious George. I bought a bunch of the barrel of monkeys and put them in a large plastic jar...we played guess how many monkeys. The barrels are about $4 a pc and I got them in Walmart. Could also use them for a scavenger hunt. Did a chocolate tier fondue with chilled banana chunks. Had a monkey character come from affairs r us...In Party city they have jungle bingo game. Also they have a set of 12 mini barrel of monkeys.

Barrel of Monkeys

Don't worry about the theme so much. 1 year old is not gonna care.

Last year my son went to a monkey-themed party (for 6 and 7 year olds). The mom got her stuff through Oriental Trading Company. She had a pinata, a monkey shaped balloon, and I believe some sort of toss game with a monkey. She may have had other stuff, too, but I couldn't stay for the whole party. That's a nice catalog for party stuff like that and it's usually not too expensive. Have fun "monkeying" around.

Hi Gerri,
I always like to read a story at my kids parties (when they were 2-4---I have girls). There is a really cute series of books about "Five Little Monkeys". I read one about baking Mama's birthday cake for my daughter's 4th birthday and she loved it. It's a good way to get the kids calming down before birthday cake.
Have fun!

Cool ideas! Hit your local dollar stores! You might find stuffed monkeys you hang around the house, put in gift bags, or hide like an egg hunt. Buy lots of yellow helium filled balloons. Cut out monkey footprints out of yellow contact paper & put on the floor for the kids to follow. Yellow & brown table cloth & napkins. You can buy at the party store a little table top palm tree & you can stick construction paper bananas in the leaves. You can use them as place cards too! Buy yellow candies & put in a dish, frost twinkies to look like bananas..dollar store again..buy blow up yellow balls, monkey stickers, yellow crayons and yellow paper....how about twister with monkeys on the dots???

Plan Hot Banana like hot potato and serve Banana smoothies and they make banana Goyourts (the kind you sip out of the package) in the market. the Naked Brother's Band (a kids band on TV) has a very popular song called Banana Smoothie. It's a show on Nickoloden or go online. You can always cut out paper bananas and have the kids decorate with stickers or color and give prizes for most creative. You can do relay races with a bunch of bananas, ie hop on one foot with banana on a large spoon or put them in teams and do relay races and hand off the bananas to next person. Hide a banana sticker under a chair and the one who gets it wins a prize. Hide the banana, make banana bread. Elmo has a show with his friend who has a banana party.
