Hello!
So my litle one (4 year old) was diagnosed with mono last week and I was just diagnosed with it yesterday. Now what? My doctor put me on steroids for 10 days. How long does it last? When will be feel better? Both doctors just said plenty of rest and fluids but how do you do that during the Christmas season? My doctor also said that it will take a lot longer for me to kick it than my daughter. HELP!!! Has anyone else gone through this - either themself or their child? Thanks!

What can I do next?

I had it when I was 16.. I slept A LOT!!! Rest is #1!! If you don't, you can relapse. Drink plenty of fluids~ I had it for about 3 weeks, booo!
Feel better!!!! And I lost about 10 lbs because I wasn't hungry at all..

I went thru this last winter into spring. I would really take afternoon naps with the kids, then go to bed at 8:30p and still feel tired at 6:00a. Try to space things out that you have to do. The stuff you want to do should probably wait because if you push yourself too hard your recovery will take that much longer. Limit your "new germ" exposure as much as possible. Wipe down all the surfaces you touch when you go out (I even wore gloves to touch shopping carts. I looked silly but then I could wash them when I got home and take them off before touching the steering wheel). It is a long road but you will make it!
Best Wishes!

when I had it, I was in bed for about a month. Litterally IN BED. Please take this very seriously. It can be very dangerous. Make sure you get rest. I've heard it can even take up to 4-6 months to feel back to yourself

2 full freakin' months before I could make thru a day without a nap & sleeping all evening/night. Seriously, I slept a lot! We live in a small town & it's 15 miles to the nearest Walmart.....I even napped on the way!

& the fatigue was all-encompassing. Folding laundry wore me out, standing & washing pots/pans was a challenge. & what's interesting is that I was cleared to continue running my daycare....sat a lot thru those 2 months! & all of the parents were a.o.k. with it. :)

Oh, & I gained almost 10lbs from being soooo sedentary.....sucked!

Here is what Web MD says
http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/infectious-mononucleos...

I feel for you, my son had this years ago for about 6 weeks, he was miserable, the only activity he did was go to college classes, there was nothing in him for anything else, slept a lot, lost weight due to the terrible sore throat. His Dr. had him come to office almost daily for the first two weeks because he was so sick, had to quit his job and his tonsils were almost closing off his throat. We had a fear that he had lymphoma.

An excellent, high quality, nutritional supplement would be helpful.

Yes I went through it in high school. It typically does last a week, but it can last longer. When I had it, it lasted a month.

I believe with mono your spleen is enlarged so you need to be careful. Also make sure you don't share cups or anything else with the rest of your family.

There is some connection between mono and Epstein Barr. I don't recall what it is. Once you've had mono it can reactivate later in life as Epstein Barr. Lucky me has had this happen.

Make sure you take it easy and get plenty of rest (believe me that is all you'll want to do!). Also minimize contact so that it doesn't spread to the rest of your family.

Hope you're all feeling better soon.

I have never had it, but PLEASE get lots of rest. (You and your daughter). It can cause other problems in your body. I think most cases take anywhere from 2 to 3 weeks to fully go away.
Pick up some Emergen-C, it will give your bodies a little boost to help fight it off.

It was extremely frustrating! I felt like I could sleep and nap and still wake up feeling exhausted! Not to mention the killer sore throat - thank goodness for codine! I would really hang low this holiday season...get some good movies and books and spend a lot of days resting and relaxing...I pushed myself because I had to maintain a certain GPA to keep my scholarship (and I was stubborn and wouldn't have the Dr. write the necessary note to let me drop the semester and pick it up again after without losing my scholarship). Now that I'm older and maybe possibly a LITTLE wiser...I would do everything to simplify and NOT push yourself. If you let people know...I'm sure they would be understanding. If your little one feels a lot better before you do, maybe there's a college student you know well that is home for the holidays that might be able to take her and do something that requires a little more energy than you have :). The holidays don't need to be frantic to be special :). Maybe it'll be one of the most memorable in a good way...slow...simple...relaxing... (maybe I'm being a bit optimistic... :p...you never know!) Good luck!
