Mono Question

Hi Moms,
My 16 yr old daughter just tested positive for mono. Her symptoms are a really sore throat and swollen glands. Her ears hurt too. Otherwise, she's fine. She's not tired. She does cheer 3 days a week and tumbling at gymnastics two days a week. The Dr. said that it is fine for her to attend her activities, but no stunting and no tumbling due to the spleen issue. She's learning the dance part of their routine. What I'm confused about is that when I looked it up, everyone talked about how much school the kids missed and how tired they were. My daughter doesn't seem to have that. Has anyone else had Mono without the tiredness? Any suggestions for us as we deal with this - we of course know that we shouldn't share drinks or food - which only happens by mistake but we'll be extra careful now and we know to wash hands often. She has no idea how she got it but she says everyone is sick at school. I'm sure she has probably used a water fountain too so that could be it.

What can I do next?

I never had it as an adult but after being sick for over a month, I ended up w/ mono. Yes I was tired but some of that could have been from having been sick for so long. My doctor said it was extremely contagious and I could have gotten it from someone standing in a line at the store. I am SHOCKED her doctor will tell he she could go to school and practice.

Mono is a broad spectrum thing. There were 6 of us that got it from drinking out of a water fountain. I was out for 2 weeks because I had the upper respritory issues and it turned into pneumonia. One of the girls landed in the hospital for over a month because it went into her spleen. The important thing for your daughter is to be very careful and very healthy. Eat the right food, get enough sleep and she might have to back down on some of the activities. Just be very careful....

Mono is spread the same way any virus is, so through touch, or the air on a cough or sneeze. I would make sure she gets more sleep and rest than usual. Mono can re-occur, and the second time could be worse.

I had Mono in College and the doctor called in Recurring Mono. I was a little tired but not enough that I really noticed due to the fact that I was so active. Your daughter probably is tired but with her schedule shes just powering through. It took about a month and then I noticed my energy level actually got a little better. So this is normal. But watch her, it could catch up with her. I would encourage her to rest when ever possible

I got this at 31 y/o... I felt like I was dying. Sore joints, chills, extreme fatigue and body pain - then the cold aspects of it too... OMGoodness!! She not have been hit with the full force of it yet, so I'd tell her to take it easy for at least a week.

I have no idea how I got it... I've been married/monogamous for over 4 years. But you can get it from sneezing or rubbing eyes/nose/mouth after touching something with the virus, etc.

That's very weird. I had mono in highschool and was EXHAUSTED!!!!! I wasn't aloud to do anything, including school.... What's really odd is that she's aloud to do physical activities.. I wasn't aloud to do that either because your body could relapse.. I would get a second opinion, something doesn't sound right~

Yep - I had mono and also thought I was dying. I actually had to have my glands drained they were so swollen that they were squeezing my throat - at one point I couldn't even turn my head very far. I missed 5 weeks of school and then only went back a few days a week for a couple weeks.

My sister had mono the next summer and was a bit "fatigued" for a couple days. But, she gets everything easy..... so this was not any different than the rest of her life (all you mamas who want to know if sibling rivalry goes away eventually...... no, it doesn't).

I almost whacked her. Right in the nose.

But, different strokes for different folks.

I had 45 hours of labor and then an emergency c-section. She's 20 weeks along and if she breezes through labor I just may whack her this time for real!

She may just be starting it. I had Mono as a adult that lasted a really, really long time and I wasn't doing gymnastics. Kids burn the candle at both ends staying up late doing homework, not eating right (even though we try to get them to) hanging with friends, getting up early for school and sports practice etc. she really should rest. I can't believe your Dr. said she can go to the activities. If she doesn't rest now it could get much worse. As a Mom I would keep her in as much as possible and get her to rest a lot. I hope she feels better soon. PS you know they call it the kissing disease and now days all the kids kiss each other even though they are just friens they hug etc. with both their girl and boy friends so she could have caught it any number of ways or just got ran down.

My now 12 year old daughter had mono when she was 8. She was just like your daughter, in that she didn't display the tiredness - it was mostly in her throat, glands and spleen. She wasn't allowed to go boogey boarding when we went to Myrtle Beach because of her enlarged spleen, but other than that she was fine to do her normal activities.

There is a very broad range of how it affects people. My 4yo son had it this summer. He had really swollen tonsils for a few weeks before he had any other symptoms. One day he complained of a really sore throat. We saw the dr. and he tested positive for mono. He felt bad for about 2 days then acted normal from then on. We did watch him carefully and tried get get to rest as much as possible because of the concerns about the spleen.

I got mono shortly before I started college. I remember that I felt kind of run down for for a couple of weeks but never felt really bad. I started college on time (a week or two after I was diagnosed) and never had a problem.

My brother had it right before I did and felt pretty bad but he also had an ear infection and strept throat at the same time. He was mostly recovered within 2-3 weeks. My cousin missed 6 weeks of school with mono.

Mono is serious. Just because she has a mild case of it doesn't mean it can't turn nasty if she doesn't take it easy. Just make her take it easy for a precaution. Mono is hard to recover from once it gets bad.

I had it when I was a preschool teacher and was out of work for a month! It was soooo horrible. I was stuck in bed, no energy, in SO much pain in my throat I couldn't even swallow my meds for it. I would still have your daughter home and resting. It could get worse even though she feels fine now

I got it my freshman year of college and was out for 2 weeks. I felt like I was dying, it's the sickest I've ever been. I would make sure she takes it easy and hopefully her symptoms will not worsen.

I missed almost 3 weeks of school with mono. My friend missed almost 5 weeks. I was also a competitive and school cheerleader and in theater and I had to miss 2 pep rallies and even a musical I was in.

I also wasn't dating so kissing was out, I didn't share drinks or food... mono spreads like wildfire.
