Do any of you have some reliable home remedies for morning sickness? I don't actually throw up, I just walk around all day wishing I could. I have tried the preggie pops, gingerale, and my doctor gave me some prescription, but it makes me SO SLEEPY it is not useful for work. I am 9 weeks in and cannot imagine another 3-5 weeks of this! HELP!!

What can I do next?

Hi S.,

What prescription did you get? When I was pregnant with twins, my doc prescribed Reglan, and it was wonderful. It did make me a little sleepy, but it was worth it to me. I could not even take a shower except once every few days, as i was do sick I could not even lift my head. It was terrible! It's really cheap too if you get the generic brand, which is metoclopramide. $4 at Costco for 2 week supply. Anyway, I hope you feel better soon.

I had morning sickness through almost my whole pregnancy.. Only two things help, early on it was ginger tea (boil sliced ginger in water then fill a glass, add half a lemon and a couple spoonfuls of honey), I actually use the same thing for a soar throat, its pretty yummy. In my last trimester I was told about vitamin B, and how a deficiency in it can cause morning sickness. I started to take a supplement and after a couple days I didn't get sick again, I just had to remember to take my supplement daily.

I haven't read the other replies so this may have already been said, but...

When I was pregnant, I found it really helpful to snack on nutritious foods pretty much constantly throughout the day. Well, maybe not CONSTANTLY (ha!), but almost! The stuff that helped me feel best were bananas, veggies with dip (carrots/bell pepper/broccoli with ranch dressing or hummus usually), peanut butter sandwiches, and lots of water throughout. I didn't gain a crazy amount of weight even though I was eating 'round the clock, I guess because I was eating healthy stuff and stayed moderately active.

Anyway, hope that's helpful! Good luck to you, and congratulations!

Try Ak-Mak if you can get it where you are. It's a middle eastern kind of cracker that's even dryer than a saltine, if you can imagine that. Our bed was always full of crumbs, because I had to eat some before I got up. And if you're taking a prenatal vitamin, make sure you take it at night (or stop for just a little while and take flintstones chewables. I could not believe how sick the prenatals were making me). Good luck.

I have been there and was sick for the first 20 weeks...I researched like a crazy woman and tried EVERYTHING!!! I even drank straight vinegar a couple of times. :)

If your doctor prescribed Phenergan, it is available in a gel form that you rub on your wrists and it is not supposed to make you sleepy. It didn't help me at all though.

I agree with Zofran working well, but my insurance wouldn't cover it and it was expensive. It also made me soooo constipated.

I took Unisom every night about an hour before I went to bed. It helped me sleep (I was so nauseous, I couldn't sleep) AND it helped take the edge off the nauseousness in the mornings so I could actually shower. I didn't feel extra tired in the morning. I would sometimes take a 1/2 a pill during the day, again to take the edge off. Midwifes sometimes tell their patients to take Unisom and B6....the B6 didn't seem to help me that much.

I tried several prescription and nonprescription prenatal vitamins, but my all-day sickness became worse, so my doc told me to take 2 Flinstone vitamins instead.

Good luck and hang in there!

Place saltine crackers beside your bed. Before picking your head up in the morning off your pillow eat 5 to 8 crackers, with sip of juice or water. It worked for me, thanks. Tricia

I would stay away from Reglan - it has been linked with causing tardive dyskinesia and I've talked to many people who have Parkinson's disease that think Reglan caused their disease also. When I was pregnant with my twin girls i was nauseas constantly - it was awful - i feel for you!! The only thing that worked was taking over the counter Unisom which is totally safe. I took half a tablet in the morning, half a tablet around noon and one full tablet before bedtime. My midwife suggested this to me and it worked! It will make you a little sleepy but the nausea will go away!

When I was pregnant I kept saltines and sweet ice tea in a cooler next to my bed. Before I sat up I would eat a couple of saltines and sip some tea. If I did not do this I felt sick and would actually throw up, all day. Peppermint hard candies or peppermint gum would also help. Good luck and God Bless!

Sure, I have lots!
1. have small frequent meals/healthy snacks , so that your stomach is never totally empty. When you get up at night to pee, instead of just drinking water, have milk or some prteoin snack, like a hard boiled egg, a turkey or pbutter& jelly sandwich.
2. replace any caffiene beverages with herb teas. Peppermint or ginger are esp. good for nausea. They can be mixed w other herbals such as cammomile, or green tea. papaya is great to. Natures Sunshine makes a good Papaya-Mint lozenge, thats handy to tuck in your purse too.
3. Wear Sea-Bands... a wrist cuff thats sold for motion sickness.
4. Visit a Chiropractor. many times severe "morning sickness" is caused by the baby pressing on your vagal nerve. In which case, a pelvic alignment wil cure it immediately.

I felt soooo green all day and evening with my second. Two things, strange as they might sound, that worked for me were small lemonheads candy and the pickled ginger that you get in the grocery store with the sushi. I would take just a tiny bite of the ginger.

I kept the lemonheads in my purse so I had them handy at all times. I read that sometimes sour things can help with the nausea and thought I'd try the candy and it really did help.

That was EXACTLY how I was...I lost 20lbs in my first trimester.

What worked for me was keeping food on my stomache, but this was a challenge when I didn't want to eat. I found that being hungry made it worse, but I couldn't stand to eat. Nuts were a god-send. I bought really good nuts and would eat a handful every couple of hours. When the hunger was gone, I noticed a little relief. I also had some dried fruit. Basically, I went for high-calorie/low volume foods, which is the exact oposite of what you'd eat on a diet, but I ate so little, it didn't matter. and at that point, if it sounded good, I would eat it.

Good luck! I remember those days, but it will pass!!

I wish I had some good advice....I was sick with all 3 of my kids from about 2 months in, all the way till delivery day! You are right, the puking is easier then the nausea.

Eating a saltine or 2 before I even lifted my head off the pillow in the morning seemed to help a bit...not much, but some.

I definitely feel for you! I am 13 weeks and still have quite the "morning, noon, and night" sickness. This is my second time around, but the following has helped me: My doctor actually has me take Unisom (doxylamine) 1/2 tab twice a day and Vitamin B6 25-50mg 2-3 times a day. Yes, i know unisom is a sleep medication, but it is a small dose and only once in the morning and once in the evening before bed. So, if you can get through the morning dose, the night dose is welcome with bedtime coming anyway! Be careful to get the correct type of Unisom, there are two kinds- and it MUST be the Doxylamine. I tried ginger capsules that seemed to help the first pregnancy. My doctor also suggested to make sure I am eating a form of protein every 2 hours or so. this would be cheese, peanut butter, sliced (and cooked) lunch meat, etc. Most of the time i have to force myself to eat, but it does make me feel better. Good Luck!

What worked for me during my first pregnancy was a peanut butter sandwich and a glass of chocolate milk. Ginger ale or coke would help sometimes, but if I could get that shot of protein and chocolate within 30 minutes of waking up - I could normally stave off that queasy feeling. During my second, I was not sick at all and during my 3rd - I would honestly drink water when I felt queasy and that helped.

I guess what I am saying is, just keep trying suggestions until you find the right combination for your body....

Good luck!

Emetrol, also called (off brand) Anti-Nausea medicine. Its a syrup, sold over the counter in most groceries or drug strores. It comes in cherry or lemon. Its the only thing that kept me sane during those first four months. I had to take it round the clock though. Otherwise I couldn't eat at all. Seriously, go get some. Its incredible. I will say its hard to swallow but once it takes effect (15 mins or so) its so worth it. I pinched my nose while I swallowed it (hated the smell). Also, don't drink anything or it will dilute the potency. There are instructions for how long to wait to drink water.

answers from Jacksonville on

I was the same for both my pregnancies. I threw up stomach acid immediately upon getting out of the bed... or within 5 minutes. Then I was continually nauseous every moment of the day/night. Mine lasted the entire pregnancy, until delivery.

I found that nibbling on snacks helped. And eating or drinking ANYthing with caffeine made it worse... soda, chocolate.. ANYthing with even the smallest amount of caffeine.. I swear I could TASTE the caffeine. (I never knew caffeine had a taste until I was pregnant, lol).

I got sick of gingerale and crackers..and to this day I still do not enjoy gingerale anymore. Banana Icees were my friend. They can be hard to come by, but you can find banana popsicles sometimes at the grocery store.

Also, check with your Doctor about Zofran. I didn't have that with my first, but with my 2nd pregnancy, it saved me. I went from not being able to sit up on the sofa the nausea was so overwhelming.. not being able to stand up long enough for a shower, etc.. to going out to a restaurant with my hubby for a nice big omelet breakfast! It is off-label use, so check into that if you are concerned about it. My daughter suffered no ill effects. In fact, she is considered gifted and to date is the healthiest person in our family.. no allergies, etc.

I managed to "self-wean" myself from the Zofran partway through my 2nd trimester... but I would have been hospitalized before we got there if I had not had it. Please talk to your doctor and ask about it. It does NOT make you sleepy like the other anti-emitics they will offer you. I could not lay around sleeping b/c of our son (who was 2 yrs at the time), so those other "options" were of no use to me.

oooh.. almost forgot... lemon drops. The mid-wife at my doc's office suggested them and they did help a little bit too. I didn't get any relief from lemon juice in water (spritzer type things you read about).. but the actual lemon drop candies did help some.

A friend of mine added Vitamin Water to her daily consumption instead of plain water and she said it helped her some. Vitamin Water comes in a lot of flavors, is naturally sweetened (no artificial junk) and has lots of B vitamins (hence the name, lol)... so maybe there is a connection with the B vitamins...

Pregnancy sickness makes you feel so awful , I have every sympathy for you! , I suffered terrible in my 3rd pregnancy after having 2 with no nausea/sickness whatsoever , it was certainly a shock , the only thing I found that helped me was dry bread or toast with a teeny tiny scrape of butter , it's all I ate for 5 weeks of my pregnancy , I also made sure that I drank plenty of water , all day taking little sips helped.

Congratulations and I hope it passes soon

I feel like the sea bands helped some (might be behind the counter at your pharmacy). Also, I think Pepto-Bismal has aspirin or something aspirin-like in it, so I'm not sure it's safe during pregnancy--you might check w/your doc. I found that I could usually eat cheese--weird because you wouldn't think dairy would help, but I had trouble with all the dry stuff, and the cheese made me feel a little full which seemed to help.

Good luck, S.!

My doctor had me try all sorts of stuff like Vitamin B, ginger supplements, etc. before he finally prescribed Zofran. It was the only thing that made the morning sickness somewhat tolerable. If you get the generic version (Ondansetron) it isn't very expensive. Also, try to snack as much as you can, especially something with protein. The nausea would always be worse with an empty stomach.

I was sooooo sick with my first baby. Ugggggh. The only things that (sort of) helped were eating a saltine before I got out of bed in the morning (but some days I threw that up, too), and finally switching to a prenatal vitamin without so much Iron in it, and more B vitamins. That helped quite a bit but I didn't discover that until 11 weeks. Up until that point, I threw up EVERY morning while taking the subway to work. It was so charming. I would take a gallon-sized ziploc with me in my purse, and when I knew I was going to throw up... I'd throw up into my ziploc bag. Isn't that the grossest thing ever? People would look at me totally horrified (but did they offer me a seat? Nooooo... the jerks! I just had to stand up on a moving train, while throwing up into a ziploc baggie! LOL - at least it's funny in retrospect!) Anyhow. This too shall pass, even though it doesn't seem like it now. =)

Everyone responds differently to different rememdies. The common advice of saltines did not work for me at all. I ate jello right before going to bed (literally in bed eat, take prenatal, pull up covers) and again when I woke up (breakfast in bed). I could not drink plain water at all - it just usettled my unsettled stomach. I drank a lot of ginger ale and apple juice or cider. I also took zofran every day in the morning. After having a couple of incidents of getting sick every 30 minutes and having to go to the hospital I was afraid to stop taking it. For me if I could get past the morning I was generally OK. I know people who said lemonheads or ginger worked for them.
