I have 12 weeks pregnant with my 2nd baby. I am going through some really bad morning sickness. I don't remember having it this bad with my first. I'm having trouble keeping any food or my prenatal down. I've tried ginger snaps, caffine free ginger ale, green tea, and also eating small meals every 2 to 3 hours. My OB even suggest I try some dramaine, all that does is knock me out. When I wake up, I'm still sick. Is there anything that worked for you that maybe I haven't tried? Desperate and willing to try anything...

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for all your helpful suggestions. I went to see my OB this morning for my 12 week check-up. She decided to put me on Zofran( which is non-drowsy). I've taken two pills already and feeling great. I wasn't really big on taking medications, but I was at the point were I was just to miserable and not able to do much with my 4 yr old son. I was actually able to take him out today for a little bit. I should have done this sooner instead of suffer... :(

Something I tried with my first pregnancy that worked really well is ginger tea. Just buy some ginger root and grate about a teaspoon off of it. Then boil some water and using a strainer let the ginger soak in the hot water for a few min. You can add sugar or cream to help with the taste (although it's not bad). I swear by this. After just a few sips I felt a whole lot better. Good luck and I hope it gets better for you soon.

I had some success with taking ginger (capsule) when I was pregnant. Ginger ale just seemed to make it worse. Also, the prenatal vitamins that I switched to helped a lot, ,I took Ranbow Light Complete Prenatal. I hope that helps!

When I had really bad morning sickness with my 2nd baby, my doctor suggested raspberry tea. I bought the caffeine free herbal kind and it really helped. I had it warm sometimes, but also made some iced tea with it. Also, I couldn't take my prenatals since they made me really sick. My doctor told me to chew 2 Flintstones children's vitamins each night before I went to bed. About 5-10 minutes before that I drank a glass of milk to coat my stomach. It worked wonderfully! peppermint. I had to carry around with me certs, the ones in the box. But it was peppermint. Not only did it make the nasuea go away, it was the best thing for my heartburn. That I had real bad.
Saltine crackers before you even get out of bed works to.

Oh boy, do I feel for you! I had no sickness at all with my first, but had morning, noon and night sickness with my second. Along with the other ideas people have listed, you could try a Relief Band. It's a type of device that looks like a wrist watch. It sends little shocks to the inside of your wrist (doesn't hurt), and it's supposed to sort of short-circuit the signals to your brain. I was very skeptical, but desperate, and it took the edge off the nausea for me. Some people say it doesn't work for them, though.

After my first was born, I found out I couldn't handle the morphine they gave me after the c-section. I was sick from the drugs for 2 weeks! Before I left the hospital, a nurse told me to drink Jello. She said to make it up just like you normally would (dissolve in boiling water, then add a cup of cold water)but drink it warm while it's still liquid. It's thick and a sugar syrup, both which help. My mom made it for me when I got home from the hospital, and it helped. Pineapple flavour was the easiest for me to drink. My mom has recently been making it for my sister-in-law, who was having morning sickness, so I guess it helps with that, too.

Maybe since you're at 12 weeks you're getting close to being past the morning sickness stage. I hope so...good luck!

Keep Saltine crackers next to your bed and before you even get out of bed eat some crackers. For some reason this works. It work 21 years ago with my first, 19 years ago with my second and it still worked 3 years ago with my 3rd. Something else that has always settled my stomach is Cream of Wheat. The Saltine Crackers first thing in the morning are the best though!!

I had morning sickness from 6wks until 14wks and what worked for me was pretzels and ginger ale. Before I got out of bed in the morning I had a few pretzels to settle my stomach. If i happen to throw them up, I would have a few more and then i was able to eat whatever I wanted. there were days that i would be nauseas the whole day and what helped with those days was sucking on candy. They have these morning sickness lollipops, they sell them at Babies r us, they worked too. hope you feel better!

Have you tried peppermints? I am pregnant with my 2nd child as well and they seem to help. The only thing that works the best is phenagrin with me though.good luck.

I had morning sickness with my first and not my second. I have been told each one is different. With my first I could only eat oreo cookies before 12 noon. Even today when my stomach is nauseious I eat a small peice of hersheys chocolate. It works for me. I hope it helps you.

Go to a vitamin store and get Papaya extract pills. Take it with your prenatal vitamin and it will ease the sickness and help you keep it down. Hope this helps!

Asl your doctor for an RX to Zofran.... I am 26 weeks with my 2nd and have been taking it since week 8.. it has been a LIFE saver, except when I have tried to come off of it....play around with the dosage, it typically calls for 4mg 2 times a day I cut minein half and now I have been down to only half a pill a day... First preg was sick thru week 30... seems like i am headed in the same direction.. how ironic... both babies are girls Good luck!

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this to you yet but have you tried preggie pops and/or drops also work depending on your preference? They sell them at babiesrus and online. They worked for my sister-in-law who had terrible morning sickness.

From a practical standpoint, I would try some light broth and apple juice because while they may not completely ccut out the sickness, at least what's coming up will not be too terribly unpleasant. Good luck!

I had severe morning sickness w/ my son, I was actually hospitalized for it twice. My doctor put me on vitamin B6 and Unisom, one of each every night and I never got sick again. Hope this helps!!

It sounds like you iron is really low. All you can do is continue to take your iron pills and eat as much green foods that you could stand. grapes brocoli etc.Oh yes and crackers with as low amount of salt as poddible.

Hi have you tried prego (preggie) pops? You get them at the maternity shops in the mall. They are lolipops and I think they have hard candies as well. They helped me alot.

I am 16 weeks pregnant and have been really sick too. This is my second preg. also. Someone recommended sucking on jolly ranchers when you get a bad taste in your mouth and they really helped. I use the tropical one's because they are more sour and they taste better. I really recommend them!!! I keep a bag in my purse all the time. Mylanta has also helped a lot. I keep a bottle of that in my purse and whenever I feel acid coming up I take a lil drink. Try eating large breakfasts also, that seems to help. If you have been taking your vitamins in the morning, that seems to make things worse. I kept mine next to my bed and take them right before going to sleep. They have such a terrible taste to them. I have tried many other things that didn't work. Medicines did nothing for me. I still get sick every once in a while, but it's getting better. Hope this helps!!!

I agree with trying suppository anti-nausea medication if the more non-traditional therapies suggested here don't work for you, ie chocolate and using scents/aromatherapy. Talk to your OB about this. When my girls had a nasty intestinal flu, they gave me suppositories since everything they took by mouth was soon vomited up.

i used to drink fresh ginger boiled with milk. Peel the ginger and boil some milk crush the peeled ginger and let it boil with the milk for about 3-5 minutes strain it and drink. now i cant gaurentee it will taste good but it did help me out a lot. good luck and let us know when the baby get shere

I was sick like that with my daughter...I was sick 24/7. I bought the Sea Bands from CVS...you wear them on your wrist and they hit your pressure points. They worked great! and lots of saltine crackers! Also if you aren't keeping your prenatals down (which I didn't either) Flinstone vitimans work just as well (and they are cheaper too).

I had very bad morning sickness too. I tried a pair of motion sickness bracelets, I think they helped me a bit. You can get them at CVS or Walgreens. Ultimately though, my doctor had to give me a prescription nausea pill, which I took when I felt particularly bad and had to work. My nausea went away half-way through my 5th month, I hope yours ends sooner!

Try sipping warm or room temperature coca cola. I know it has caffeine in it, but studies have shown that small amounts of caffeine (2 drinks per day) during pregnancy are not harmful to the baby.

Hi, P., I had terrible morning sickness with all three of my pregnancies so I know how horrible it can be. My last pregnancy I popped peppermint candies as much as could for the first couple of weeks, but someone I know just told me about Jolly Ranchers candy. Sometimes getting a different taste in your mouth can help. Also, if you are not opposed to using medication during your pregnancy their are anti-nausea drugs that your doctor can prescribe to you if you are having trouble keeping your food down. Good Luck!

With my first daughter I can honestly say I felt ill for 5 months...my first suggestion would be to continue what you are doing espcially with the small snacks, ginger etc...but I would stear clear of the drugs...we don't know what these do to our unborn children and I think I would rather put up with the morning sickness than worry what effect these drugs could have on my child...however there are some serious cases of morning sickness that will prevent you from gaining weight this is much more of a concern further into you pregnancy, I bet you will find the morning sickness starting to subside soon..

The only other suugestion I can give you is: switch to a whole food vitamin supplement (I happen to sell and recommend Shaklee, but Juice Plus is good too) and a high quality probiotic, you may find this alone will help with the morning sickness..people fail to realize synthesized vitamins can be very hard on a pregnant system and you are not likely getting all the nutritional benefit as a whole food supplement can give.

And examine your diet, just by increasing your protein intake may help, most birth defects are a cause of protein deficiencies so a well balanced diet high in protein has several benefits.. you may want to visit www.blueribbonbaby.org the Brewer diest sounds ideal for you and your situation.

Hello,
I was sick w/ both my girls...it's an awful feeling. You may want to try motion sick bracelets...I bought these lollipops from pregopop.com...You can also talk to your ob about meds...he can give you a vit b6 & unasom prescription & if it's really severe you can do meds like reglan or zofran. But please speak to your ob about it!

Dear P.,
I would ask your OB about soppositories (sorry for the spelling). I was so sick with my first. I lost 10 pounds and had to be placed on an IV after 5 months of vomiting. Finally, I told my OB I wasn't leaving the office until they did something. They did, once I tried them, I felt much better. My daughter was born at 9 lbs. 5 ounces.

I also had it really bad - and it lasted till 6mos and then came back at 9mos. I even got sick twice in delivery! I feel for you, I really do. I tried all the home-remedies everyone tells you to. Ginger extract pills gave me even worse heartburn, crackers came up like everything else, peppermint didn't make me sick, but didn't help much either. Anyway, after two consecutive months where I lost weight when I went in for my checkups, my Dr. finally prescribed Reglan. I could have cheerfully strangled him - he could have done that in the begining. Reglan really helped, although I never was able to take my prenatals, even with the Reglan. Reglan did make me a bit sleepy, but I was able to function once I got used to them. And I had a very healthy little girl, and delivered at the same weight I was when I started the pregnancy (not intentional, just a result of m/s). I talked to my pharmacist when I picked the Reglan up, and he said that if his wife were pregnant and needed something, he would feel comfortable with her taking Reglan. That really helped ease my mind. Talk to your Dr. and also your pharmacist and maybe they can find something that works for you. Good luck!

*hugz* P.! With my first, I had morning sickness so bad, I was on IV quite a few times. I agree with the mint ideas! One thing that helped me what eating saltines (WITH the salt) before i got up, and drinking some water...laying there for a few minutes before getting up too. Try the Sea Bands at Walgreens. they just rest on your wrist and actually do help some people. Try B6...take it at least twice a day, first one in the morning. It really does help you feel less nausea. And if its really bad, there are a few options that your OB may have to help with all of this. Maybe this ones a gyrl? :) Call me if you need any help!

A friend suggested having saltines by your bedside with some water so when you first get up, you have a few and then wait till it gets down there. Never have a prenatal on an empty stomach and if you're ill, then your stomach is empty. Prenatals on an empty stomach will make you ill alone! No one says they have to be taken in the morning. If you find you can keep food down at lunch or dinner, take them then.

REAL GINGER ALE, or ginger beer (it has no alcohol from the health store. Albertsons used to have a Dr. Browns ginger ale made with real ginger) worked for me. The trick is that you have to drink it before you get up in the morning. My husband had to bring it to my bed. The ginger snaps worked for me too, but I had to eat a bunch before I got up. Another trick is to NEVER let yourself get hungry. Snack constantly on carrots or really small meals. I found this to work for me, and I hope it does for you too.

What worked for me is Menthol (aka Vick Vapo-Rub). There’s this little nose tube you can buy for a few bucks, and whenever I’d feel a wave of sickness, I’d whip it out and sniff it (like ‘smelling salts’). It really worked for me! (ginger, peppermint, eating frequently never really helped me either). Oh yeah, coffee would help too! I’d sniff it more than drink it. Just find scents that make you feel better – and don’t discount anything! (who thought menthol and coffee would settle me??)

Try sucking on peppermints or drink peppermint tea, also make sure that you drink plenty of fluids so that you do not dehydrate. If the prenatals make you sick try taking them at night or do not take them at all. I was very sick with both my boys and I couldn't take prenatals but I had very healthy babies (8lbs 4oz & 8lbs 7oz) Keep some saltine crackers with you at all times and nibble on a few before you get hungry and eat a few before you get out of bed in the morning. i am a birth doula and this is the advice that I give to my moms with morning sickness and it usually works, good luck and I hope this info helps.

I am a proud mother of 3 who suffered with morning sickness with all of them ( I broke my water vomiting with my oldest)..I will tell you though that the only thing that helped after my 1st pregnancy was crackers and flavored sparkling water..lol..But , like the other mom said, I had to have them before I got up , because once I stood up , it was over..God Bless You hon, I know it's rough, but it'll be over before you know it I promise..

It sounds to me like you have low blood sugar or hypoglycemia (the opposite of gestational diabetes). Try peanut butter crackers and very frequent snacks with protein. Avoid 'hunger' and eat or drink small snacks every hour. Hang in there, it will get better soon (it did for me).

I'm 7 months pregnant and battled all day sickness for the first 5 1/2 months. My doctor prescribed phenergen to me and it worked miracles! It's not harmful for the baby. You'd have to check with your doctor and see if its right for you. If you don't want to take medicine you could always try to eat small amounts all throughout the day. A handful of grapes then maybe 30 minutes later try a piece of toast, things like that. Hope some of this helped.

I can totally sympathize with you. My 2 kids were born less than 13 months apart and I had morning sickness for a solid 6 weeks each. That's 12 weeks of being sick within about a year, and it wasn't just morning, it was night, noon, evening, middle of the night, you name it!
The only thing I could keep down was Mentos (mint candies). I tried crackers by the bed to eat before I got up. I tried apples, papaya, tea, toast, etc. Everything came back up even water. Except for the Mentos. And I could only eat about 6 to 10 of those per day. And if it wasn't for them, I wouldn't have eaten anything at all. And when I could finally eat, it was only bland stuff like mashed potatoes, toast, rice, pasta, and some fruits.
Every person is different and every pregnancy is different. I just happened to have morning sickness with both of mine. Some people have none at all and some have it for the whole pregnancy.
Just hang in there, and hopefully you will feel better before you know it.

I remember reading that the morning sickness will pass with sufficient vitamin C in your system. Preggie drop candies from the Motherhood Maternity store really helped me as long as I had one every hour or so...I ended up drinking a lot of orange juice and eating lemons with salt on them(which my dentist threw a fit about). I had to do this the whole pregnancy for that nausea, but it did let up around my fourth month from being "ALL-DAY" sickness to just here and there.

I really feel for you, I have two boys and both of my pregnancies were bad, I missed a lot of work and spent a lot of time in the bathroom. Some of the things I did was

--Keep a bag of pretzel or crackers next to your bed, before you even get up in the morning, eat a few in bed.
--Eat bananas and rice, these foods are so gentle on the stomach and easy to keep down
--Emetrol, this is an over the counter nausea rememdy, it helps through hard times
--Hold on, you are at 12-weeks which means you are probably nearing the end, everyone is different, but you may only have a few more weeks of misery before it subsides and becomes a distant memory.

My last suggestion would be that there are anti-nausea medications that your doctor can give you a script for. If the best your doctor is suggesting is Dramamine, you could try asking for something else, or you could get another opinion, 12 weeks is early enough to switch OB's.

Hi there! As the mother of 3 boys and with the last 2 I had morning, noon and night sickness for the first 5 months. What really helped for me was lemon ice tea, anything with salt in it and something I found accidentally while shopping one day; Preggie Pops. I was horribly sick during my last pregnancy & the only thing that worked was a prescription from my OB called Zofran. It was a miracle, it really worked. Talk to your OB about it. Hope this helps.
