ZOFRAN ( I think thats the spelling) I was so sick I could barely move let alone eat- this stuff saved me and I didn't have any side affects.. Also gave birth to a very healthy baby.
I am pregnant with my 2nd and having terrible morning sickness that lasts all day. My OB wants to prescribe me some drugs so that I can get some food in me. I am worried about taking anything, even tylenol. I was wondering if anyone has taken prescription drugs for nausea and what were the risks. Or if anyone has done something besides drugs that worked.
ZOFRAN ( I think thats the spelling) I was so sick I could barely move let alone eat- this stuff saved me and I didn't have any side affects.. Also gave birth to a very healthy baby.
I had TERRIBLE all-day nausea with my twins for the entire first trimester. I didn't go to the doctor or get on any medication, but I did practically LIVE off of the orange sherbet ice cream stuff that you can get at Wal-Mart (comes in a round tub) and saltine crackers. The crackers soothed my stomach so that I wouldn't throw up, but if I did get sick (like a couple times when I ran out of crackers), then afterwards I would eat the sherbet and the coolness of it felt really good on my throat.
Phenergan is often given for morning sickness and it does help. Try keeping something like soda crackers bedside, in the mornng before you even get up eat a couple crackers. It seems as though if you let you tummy get totally empty the worse you get. This is what worked for me anyway:) anymore
?s please feel free to ask.
I experienced "all-day-sickness" in my first trimester and, though I rarely vomited, I felt like I needed to all the time. I had a friend recommend supplementing with up to 100mg of vitamin B6 everyday. After about a week, I felt significantly better. Check with your doctor for safe doses before starting but this approach may be a more homeopathic option for you.
Depending on what you could tolerate, I would try the following. They have worked for me at times.
Clear soda - Sprite
Mint Tea - or spearamint - hot or cold
ginger cookies, or anything with ginger
saltines. I know people who put them by their bed, and as soon as they wake up - but before you get up, eat one or two.
Dry toast.
They also have lollypops at Once Upon a Child that are suppose to help with morning sickness - but I have never tried them.
Good luck!!
I have heard that Ginger helps with that.
also I have heard Tylenol is OK to have.
Dear M.-
I was terribly sick with both children. I got SOME relief with the bands that you wear on your wrist for travel/motion sickness. They press against pressure points that somehow stop the naseau. Give them a little time to work. It helped at least for a few weeks so that I could keep crackers down. Good Luck!!
If you are not keeping anything down, you are not being nourished appropriately and if you are not nourished, your baby can't get what he/she needs to grow and develop properly. Your baby only gets what you put in (and is absorbed by) your body. Sure, there is probably some risk to taking any drug, but it would be better to give him/her what he NEEDS than deprive him of it so that he doesn't get a little bit of something he doesn't need.
M.,
I am a wellness coordinator for juice plus-it is simply 17 fruits and vegatables in a capsul. They are doing a study right now at the University of Mississippi Medical Center on Pregnancy Health. The preliminary study has already shown that women who took juice plus had fewer Caesarean deliveries, no premature deliveries before 37 weeks and no diagnosed incidents of preeclampsia. This is the future prenatal vitamin. Anyway, I was lucky enough not to every have morning sickness, but I can imagine what you are going through. I do have a good friend who took this the whole time she was pregnant and did not have morning sickness. It would be good for you since you are not able to eat very much and you need good nutrition. I can share more info with you if you would like, good luck.
Have you tried to drink pepperment tea or chamomile tea?
I was prescribed Zofran for both pregnancies. It really helped me get through the day.
HI M.,
SO SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR MORNING SICKNESS, BUT MY MOM OFFERED THE BEST REMEDY FOR ME, MAYBE IT WILL WORK FOR YOU....B-4 YOU GO TO BED PUT AN OPEN CAN OF 7UP ON THE NIGHT STAND W/ A REGULAR SALTINE CRACKER, AND BEFORE YOU ELEVATE YOUR HEAD TAKE SIPS AND NIBBLES. ANOTHER THING THAT WORKED FOR ME (because smells would trigger sickness) WAS PEPPERMINT CANDIES ie: ALTOIDS, CANDYCANES, OR THE LITTLE ROUND PEPPERMINTS. JUST SUCK ON THEM AND MY NAUSEA WAS GONE!!
SOUNDS CRAZY BUT I HOPE IT HELPS!!
hi there! sorry you are going through this! i had morning sickness pretty bad too! ginger works absolutely great! search online for recipes using ginger like ginger teas, cookies, desserts and things like that. ginger works well to soothe nausea, i hope it works for you so you can avoid perscriptions! take care!

Ginger. Ginger is a godsend. Check out the Motherhood store, and I think Babies R Us has them as well - they're ginger drops. Little hard candies loaded with ginger - taste yummy and stop the churning. I also liked ginger in a little bit of skim milk. Nutrients with a little help. Good luck! Hope it goes away soon!!
Have you tried chewing on ginger root? That's helped some of my friends :-). Something that helped me was sipping on ice water consistently. Sometimes the nausea is a result of dehydration. Sucking on ice or taking small sips of water can help without putting too much in your stomach at once, causing you to feel even more sick.
I don't know about the medicines for nausea, but I do know about the morning sickness. I had all day morning sickness with both of my kids and it was AWFUL! I would even wake up sick in the night. What worked for me was to keep some crackers and tepid water by the bed at night with me to nibble on and drink anytime I was going to have to move.
Another tip I've heard but didn't try was to keep a banana and some warm gatorade handy. Anytime you feel sick, snack on the crackers or banana and take a sip of water or gatorade.
I even carried a bottle of water and a package of crackers around with me.
Also, peppermint tea (or even peppermint candies) is good for nausea and won't hurt the baby!
Good luck and I hope you feel better!
I went thru the exact same thing with my second child - I was nauseous all day long. When I starting losing weight, my doctor also prescribed some medication to take about 30 minutes before eating. It helped but it had other side effects - not to be too graphic, we'll just say it made me very "gassy" and bloated. I didn't take it for long - and eventually, the nausea went away by the time I reached my 4th month.
I've relieved myself from severe nausea and dizziness through drinking no to morning sickness tea. It's an organic and preservative-free home remedy that eased me instantly.
I suffered with two pregnancies, and had several different prescription medications to deal with the nausea. My children are still young, but so far there are no "side effects". You may want to check out the website www.helpher.org There are many forums in which women talk about different medications. Hope this helps and good luck, I know it can be miserable!!
Hello,
My name is T. and I have two girls, a 14 year old and a 3 month old. I took Zofran for morning sickness with my 3 month old and had only slight constipation. As far as Riley my baby goes she turned out very healthy.
Hope this helps. I loved Zofran because it is the same medicine they give Chemo patients for naseua.
Phenergan, Phenergan, Phenergan!
My doctor prescribed Phenergan suppositories due to the fact that I was throwing up as soon as I woke up, again at 10:00 a.m., and again every night after dinner. Plus I was nauseous 24/7. I never thought that I would promote or brag about a suppository…but hey….whatever it takes. Nothing else worked. My morning sickness started at 6 weeks and lasted until appox. 22 weeks but at least I was able to keep food down and know that my baby was getting the proper nourishment. The only side affect was drowsiness but you are already tired from the pregnancy so how can you really tell the difference? Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.
M.,
A lot of my clients have had terrible morning sickness, and it really can be debilitating! I certainly understand your concern about taking any medication, and applaud you for looking into alternative options that are healthier/safer for you and the baby ;) Below is a link about morning sickness and tips for treating it, and the other two are products that are beneficial for treating morning sickness...

Best of luck!
I got a perscription for a watch like thing that sent inpulses to a pressure point in my wrist. that helped. I was also later put on a Chemo drug I forget wich one. I never gained weight but my DD was 8lb 3 oz. Good luck try ginger altoids I found them at cost plus they helped with the vomiting also.
I myself didn't take anything but my friend who is also prego has been very sick. Dr. gave her meds to help so far none were working till he gave her some meds they give cancer patients to help there nausea and she feels much better and is back to work/normal.
that is all I can say. sorry if that dont' help.
M.,
I am 25,have 3 children and have been married going on 8 years,When I was pregnant with my last two (boys) I was on a few different medications do to an illness, With my last boy I was so sick (morning sickness) the Dr. gave me medication (Zofran worked the best and it wont make you tiered, hopefuly your insurance will cover that one) for it and I felt better most of he time but still I was on one (strong) narcotic the whole last two pregnancies and the Dr. made sure the med. were not going to hurt the baby, I had to go to a high-risk OB so they could keep a closer eye on things. Both of my boys were born fine the Dr. in the hospital watched for any signs of withdraws and my youngest son showed some signs so they gave him medication in the hospital to help with that and now they are 5 years and 9mo.and doing great. My OB told me that you can use ANY Tylenol products even the Tylenol Cold and things like that..If you are really worried do some looking on the internet. The Dr's have levels for medication like Tylenol is in the "a" group most narcotics and in the "b" or "c" group that higher the letter the more dangerous it CAN be to the baby, When I was preg. with my first son my Rumatoligist had me on a "x" med. not knowing and when I told my OB what I was on they just had me stop it right away and that was an arthritis med. I hope this might be helpful, Good luck and hope you feel better.. Renee
I've tried the that ginger method with an upset stomach and that works for my family. But I've heard that ginger ale doesn't work, maybe because it's diluted or maybe it's the carbonation. I don't know. But like I said ginger tea and ginger slices works for me. If you try using ginger ale and that doesn't work, try some other ginger methods before ruling out ginger. Hope this helps!
Good luck,
Steph
M., I feel your pain! You poor girl...I KNOW how crappy it can be. I had to stop working immediately and spent LOTS of time in the hospital in the beggining of my pregnancy! I kept getting dehydrated and needing fluids. It was awful! There are several meds that are safe to take during pregnancy (gosh, I've probably been on all of them) and keep in mind that your OB would never prescribe something that wasn't safe. There is also the benefits vs risks factor. In the case of hyperemesis gravidarum (severe "morning" sickness) the benefits clearly outweigh the risks! I am also totally paranoid about meds in general (yep, even tylonol) but I was feeling SO bad that I was willing to try anything!!! I was put on three different meds before I found one that actually worked. Honestly they made me feel worse! I wish I could remember the names of them but I can't. (I'll look through my med cabinet later and if I can find them I'll send you a message with the names) although everyone is different and just because they didn't work for me doesn't mean they won't for you.
Anyway, the wonder drug I ended up LOVING was ZOFRAN. Its generally prescribed to cancer patients, I know this because my mom took it during chemo when she was sick. It is AWSOME...NO side effects what so ever!!! Talk to your OB about it, you will NOT be disappointed...promise! Take heart, I know how hard this is
but keep in mind it DOES get better as time goes on and once you hold that sweet baby in your arms it will all be worth it! After my fourth month it got so much better that I no longer needed the zofran. Thank God because it was SOOO expensive (and not covered by my insurace unfortunately). Take care and let me know if I can do anything for you...I know its the WORST!!! God bless! :)
I tried everything in both mypregnancies and found that taking 50mg of vitamin B6 four times per day helped me to function- it didn't get rid of everything but I was able to eat and get stuff done without feeling like I was going to throw up every second! Hope this helps- try combining with ginger as well, i found that ginger took the edge off a little, too. Good Luck!
I had morning sickness this time, too, in the early stages. The few things that saved me were: ginger root pills from GNC, sucking on peppermints, and having cracker-type food on my nightstand so I could nibble something before I even rolled out of bed. I would try all other avenues before taking prescrip meds--doctors say things are ok, but why take a chance, right? (Of course, I didn't need to worry about being underweight at any point!)
S.
I feel for you! With my first dd I was sick from the time I got up in the day to the time I went to bed....even while I was sleeping I would wake up to puke. I was like that the WHOLE pregnancy even 2 days after delivery! I am surprised I decided to have more kids :) My Dr. didnt give me anything. I suffered through it. By the 3rd baby I realized that morning sickness can be a cycle...you dont eat because you feel sick, in turn you start feeling sicker because you didnt eat which leads to not eating more. Its hard but try to keep nibbling, crackers on your night stand to eat right before bed and right when you get up. Small, Small meal help until you start feeling better. But just keep snacking. I surprisingly didnt have any morning sickness with my 3rd. I mean I dont know if its because of the way I keep eating to keep from feeling sick just beacuse I was hungry or because it was a boy, my other 2 were girls :) ( still giving me problems to this day ) lol
Good Luck! I hope you start feeling better soon
Hi M.,
I had severe morning sickness while pregnant from the 2nd month in all the way up to 7 months and then I gave birth at 8 months go figure just when I was starting to enjoy it! I was prescribed Phenergan/ Promethazine and Zolfran for the nausea. I was so bad that I was actually admitted to the ER for dehydration... I had a bad reaction w/ the Phenergan, it gave me restless legs while the rest of my body felt dead to the world, the nausea was less irritating. Everyone is different so you could benefit from it. And I had Zolfran in the hospital and I had no problems w/ it. I was also told to have your beverages at room temperature before you drink them. If you like Gatorade, I split the bottle in half and filled it up the rest of the way w/ water. And sip. I dont know if your doctor told you to not take your prenatals but that can trigger the nausea too. If you can at least try to eat broth, plain toast, jello, or apple sauce.... that was my diet for 2 weeks... Well I hope this is of some help to you. If you have any other questions you can email me at ____@____.com Good luck and hang in there! =)
H.
PS I also heard that ginger helps... if you haven't yet maybe try ginger ale or ginger tea???
Umm, ginger can work. You know, ginger ale or ginger tea. I used peppermint tea. They helped. My MIL said almonds would work - not sure why, and have never heard that from anyone else, but might be worth a shot.
I had my first son 3 years ago and there was a new perscription for morning sickness on the market and i cant remember the name of it but it was a little white pill that desolved under your tounge. I call it the miracle pill. It works GREAT!!! No side effects at all. It is very expensive though. or at least it was then. You should ask your doctor if he knows of one that desolves under your tounge. its the best.
Good luck,
B.
M.,
Ask your OB about trying slippery elm and or ginger crystals. The slippery elm will help with discomfort associated with reflux and the ginger is good for nausea as well. I was blessed by not having morning sickness with my pregnancy, so I don't have any personal experience with medications for that, but I have suggested these other remedies to several of my pregnant patients and many have experienced relief.
I don't think it will be enough if you are suffering from hyperemesis, but for nausea without excessive vomitting and fluid loss it might be worth a try.
Take care...
PS: both can be found at wild oats or whole foods
I had horrible morning sickness, throughout the day and my entire pregnancy. I was prescribed some meds, they worked and caused no issue for me or the baby. The only side effect for me was the drowsiness. I also used peppermint tea, sprite, crackers in the morning before I even moved out of bed. That really helped me. Good luck. :)
