My son is about 4.5 months old and exclusively breast fed the problem is he keeps getting canker sores in his mouth. The pediatrician has no idea why and just suggested salt water on a q tip swab. He is a good eater and has gained weight really well. Very healthy happy baby otherwise. But when the canker sores are at the worst he is super fussy at the breast and it takes forever to get him to eat. The ped asked me not to use oragel(not sure why). Has anyone else had this situation?
No pacis he wont take them. No illnesses.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well he didn't have thrush and he didn't have a virus. They went away and haven't come back. And thanks but our pediatrician is wonderful so we wont be changing. Thanks for taking the time to answer.

Is there a white film around the canker sores? If so then it's thrush - my first child had it. It's a mild fungal thing that gets passed back and forth between baby's mouth and your nipple. It is somewhat painful apparently. The pediatrician gave us an anti-fungal and it went away pretty quickly. I had to swab my nipples after nursing too. It's not a big deal at all. My "baby" is now in high school and no worse for the thrust. ;o)

Wow, how frustrating! I don't know if you are "into" complimentary/alternative medicine, but I might consult with a naturopath to see if a homeopathic remedy might clear this up for the poor baby! Infants respond amazingly well to homeopathy!

You may want to consider switching prediatricians since this one did not even bring up the possibility that it may be thrush

has your child recently been on any antibiotics? Thrush is something that can occur after a dose of antibiotices. It is a form of a yeast infection in their mouth. looks a little cancery from what I have been told.
However, I would think your pedi would have caught this. . . to be on the safe side, use a damp wash cloth to wipe out baby's mouth after every feeding and if you are using pacis, wash those frequently too.

My brother, when he was an infant, had a ton of food allergies and got canker sores in his mouth, caused by the allergies. I'm not sure whether you've started your little one on solid food or if he's still on only formula (generally they say to start on solids a 6 months). However, you might bring this idea up with the pediatrician--maybe switching formula will help if it's a food allergy.

My DS got hand, foot, and mouth disease at about 11 months. He had ulcers all in his mouth and down his throat. I took him to the ER because it was New Year's and I couldn't get him to eat or drink.
They told me to mix equal parts Mylanta and children's Benadryl, take a cotton swab and swab his mouth down with it before he ate. Don't let him drink it, but this might help with his pain.

Wow, salt on sores???Are you kidding me?? That only makes it worse!!!And ouch...! It could be thrush so ask the doc about treating it with medicine and give the boy a pickle to suck/munch on...the vinegar helps a great deal and the coldness (out of the refrigerator is best) relieves the pain. Poor little sweetie...my son used to have this recurrently, I remember those days. Malke sure the skin on your nipples is also "disinfected" and free of the form of "candida" that gives your baby the ulcers...you may want to ask for antibiotics (for yourself) to keep the yeast infection at bay. Your baby may have caught it from you.
