You could try asking the folks at Anchorage First Covenant Church - their senior pastor used to be the pastor at our church in Berkeley and he and his wife (who's also a pastor) are wonderfully caring people (their 3 kids are all grown so they don't have firsthand experience with the schools in Anchorage, but they'd probably be able to connect you with people who do have school age kids)

I don't know housing in Anchorage, so I cannot help you there. But I wanted you to know we lived in AK for 14 years and we LOVED it!!! We lived in Fairbanks 8 yrs and Juneau 6 yrs. It's an incredible state. Enjoy living there and take advantage of all the amazing places you can go see! Make sure you get out in the winter and find things to do that excite you. The people who hole up in the winter seem to become unhappy due to having less sunlight I think. I volunteered for dog mushing races, learned to xcountry ski, hiked alot and even learned how to winter camp. Anyway, I just wanted to say enjoy your new place of residence!!! Good luck finding a good place to live.

You should look into Eagle River, Birchwood, and Palmer. I have no idea what is "affordable" for a military salary but I live in Anchorage. There are a lot of Military people who live in those towns I mentioned, because it is quite a bit cheaper than Anchorage, and VERY close to the bases. The areas that are close to base in Anchorage are Mountain View, and Muldoon. Mountain View is our "ghetto", and Muldoon is hit and miss with nice homes mixed in with old trailer homes etc. If you do want to live in Anchorage, South Anchorage is the "nice side", with lots of options for prices for homes and many good school choices.... Just has a longer drive to base, which in rush hour could be 40-45 minutes each way.

Here is a good website for looking up info about schools.
