My husband and I are considering moving to the Charlston. We will be visiting in the beginning of July. We were told the Charlston Harbor Resort would be a great place to stay. Our reseach has led us to the Mt Pleasant area. Does anyone have any experience with the schools? My son will be entering Kindergarden in the fall. Any suggentions on places to visit or areas to explore? Communities to consider? Also, I'm just wondering how the living compares to the Philly area? Has anyone relocated from PA or NJ? Any info would be greatly appeciated. Thanks

What can I do next?

I moved from Philly to SC and live and work in the Charleston area. Mount Pleasant (MP), Isle of Palms (IOP),Daniel's Island, and James Island are the most expensive but of course nicest places to live. The schools in these areas are nice and most are very new. There are also charter and magnet schools available in the county. There are tons of county parks ($1 to get in per person or you can buy a pass) and during the summer there are 3 water parks throughout the county in these parks. I love the living here better than philly, but i also don't like driving in snow and don't like city living lol. Good luck and if you have a question about a specific school let me know i have contacts throughout the district (fyi some of daniel's island is berkely co. schools, also a good district.)

I live in Ladson, which is about 15-20 minutes outside Charleston and was born outside Philly in Bucks County. What area do you currently live in and is it your husband's work that's moving you? I can tell you there are many yankees here and a lot are from that area. Living here is a little bit of a culture shock at first but Mt. Pleasant won't be so bad as that is where a lot of people from the NJ, PA and NY areas have relocated. I have extended family that lives in Mt Pleasant and I have also worked there and it is a great community. The worst thing here in my opinion is the oppressively hot summers. I guess if you've lived with northeaster winters this long the hot summers and mild winters will be a welcome change and your sons will love the milder weather because it will afford them more time outside.

Check out www.schoolmatters.com to research and compare schools. It's a great resource.

I actually moved down to Charleston in 96 from CT and never left. I love it down here. Charleston has so much to offer.

You should check out the Aquarium, Splash Zone Water Park, Angel Oak Tree, Middleton and Boone Hall Plantation, Carriage Tours, Fort Sumter tours, Edmonston-Alston House Tour. Great restaurants - Poe's on Sullivans Island, Long Point Grill and Boulevard Diner in Mt. P., Basils, Rue de Jean, Jestins, FIG, Hominy Grill - Downtown, just to name a few.... There are so many great restaurants down here.

If you have any questions on the area or subdivisions, I would be more than happy to help you. I am a real estate agent with Keller Williams Realty in Mount Pleasant. You can reach me at ____@____.com or ###-###-####. There are so many great subdivisions and locations all around the Charleston area - Mount Pleasant, Daniel Island, James Island, West Ashley, the beaches - so many great areas to choose from depending on what fits your family best.

Best of luck in your search and I hope to hear from you!

We moved to Mt Pleasant from Houston two years ago. Mt Pleasant is a nice place to live, but it is a bit expensive compared to other areas of town. We have friends that live in West Ashley and like it there too. There are MANY nice neighborhoods to live in here in Mt Pleasant. It depends on what you want. Some have many amenities and others have none, but the yearly fees also reflect that. I haven't heard anything bad about any Mt Pleasant schools. They're top of the line for the area. There are also many nice community parks nearby, plus the county park and beaches. I would highly suggest going to Palmetto Islands Splash Island water park if you're here during the summer. It is perfect for young children and something to do during the HOT afternoons. The childrens museum downtown is also nice. You might also be interested in seeing Alhambra Hall. There is a nice view of the harbor behind the main building and a good park in front of the building (something for the whole family to enjoy). The aquarium would be a wonderful indoor activity for all ages. Hope you enjoy your visit. Also, if you do move here, check out the MOMS Clubs in town. They're great for stay at home moms w/ young kids!
